Silly question re sperm for IUI

if anyone can't tell- I'm a planner! Just curious does your DH go into the office and give his sample there or does he do this at home and transport the sample in? I wasn't prepared for an IUI but my RE decided if I don't notice EWCM he wants to do one so I'm trying to mentally prepare. TIA! Yay for being off the bench!

Re: Silly question re sperm for IUI

  • We have always had a choice of home or facility collection. If you collect the sample at home you have 30mins to get it to the lab and you have to keep it warm. That's been our experience anyway :)

  • My RE's office prefers to do it in-office. They did let us do home collection for the last IUI because DH's schedule conflicted with the procedure. I'd never do it again; there was much panicking in the morning, DH was stressed, and we had to rush it in--we got an hour to get it in from when it was produced. But we live in a major city, so we were also dealing with public transit/cabs, which make it difficult to get to the office in a timely manner when you're rushed.
  • Hmm all good points. My DH seems pretty laid back about it so hopefully he won't mind going in to give the sample. He didn't complain about the SA so I'm hoping we're good.

  • Also, my DH said there was some really quality. . . uhh... "reading material" in the collection room. I think that helped him relax a bit because he was a little weird about doing it there.

My DH had to do it in the collection room for his SA because we live too far away.

  • lol, I love this thread!  My husband wouldn't do it at the office, and they wanted us to bring it in at 7:30 am!  It was so stressful trying to get it done that early and get it there on time, haha!  I think if we did it again he would do it at the office!

@harleyquinn0621 I always wonder who chooses the videos they have in the collection room. Do they change them up?  :D

  • DH prefers the fertility lab at the clinic. Then he doesn't have to stress about getting the specimen there and be distracted at home.

  • I just have to add to this....we squeaked in an IUI the morning the we flew out of town. We weren't expecting to get to do one so we had no specimen cup to get a sample at home. We went to the collection "office", but they weren't open yet. The lab gave us a cup, but said they had nowhere private for my SO to do his business! We ended up going to another building near the lab and poor SO had to lock himself in a bathroom outside of a neurology clinic....which happened to be super busy at the time. He acted like it was no sweat, I was so proud of him because I was not handling the situation well! I just couldn't imagine having to do that in such a public place.

  • @clt2pwm11 - there was "reading material" in our collection room too, except it was DVDs. Apparently there was also a little sink "at penis height" which made me laugh. My DH did not like the room, but I'm so nervous about traffic or an accident or something happening that would eat up the time limit.

@hoffmanr7 - whoa! so sexy! hahaha!
I did send him a couple of pictures via text to help him out, just in case
    I did NOTHING like that!

@harleyquinn0621 - that is SO weird!
  • @PoeMasque I almost shot water out of my nose laughing! That is one trooper of a husband.

@lablover78 DH has provided his samples from home, and then transported to the clinic. The clinic I go to does not have a room dedicated to such a thing, and we'd have to go to clinic in another city if he wanted to provide it in house. For us, he's been able to do his thing in the comfort of his home, and then we just drive on in. The doctor recommended just sitting the cup between his legs for the ride in to stay warm. Now, we haven't gotten a BFP yet after two cycles, so I can't guarantee that it's the right way to do it, but each time they tell us the counts and tests are good.

  • I got a good story too!! When my husband had to give his SA he had work that day. He didn't have time to come home and do it so he had to go to the facility. He didn't feel comfortable doing it at the hospital either so he did it in his car in the parking garage!!!!! I kid you not lol!!!
