Infertility

Blood type and infertility

new to group: loss mentioned

  • Hi everyone! I'm really hoping that your support and understanding can get me through this frustrating time, as most of you are dealing with it too. I've been trying to get pregnant for over a year. I eventually did, but had a miscarriage at 11wk due to the baby having trisomy 22 (genetic defect incompatible with life). The thing is I keep having chemical pregnancies, but nothing sticks. I have done extensive research and have gotten many opinions from doctors, all of which told me that there's nothing wrong with me and to give it more time (I'm only 32). What I think the problem is is both my. Blood type and my husbands, but I can't seem to find any information on the compatibility of our blood, which is why I'm hoping someone here can shed some light. I have o- blood (only 8% of people have it) and my husband has b- (only 2%). Talk about soulmates! I'm starting to feel that our blood types won't "mix" if you will, causing me these problems. Again, my doctor's don't seem concerned and I can't find any research on those two blood types mixing. Hopefully someone on here can relate or knows of something. Maybe this can even shed some light for some of you, too.

Re: Blood type and infertility

  • Don't know anything about blood types, but I did just learn about MTHFR gene mutation (pertains to blood in a way). I found out I am postive for it, there are a few types, I have the most involved one. Basically, my homocysteine levels are elevated because my body does not process follow acid correctly. I'm at higher risk for blood clots which in return puts me at higher risk for miscarriage, infertitly, heart disease and stroke. I had 3 miscarriage and an eptopic pregnancy before discovering this. It's treatable.
Look into being tested for it, it's just bloodwork. Hope it helps!

  • I have not heard of this causing infertility. Maybe you're thinking of Rh incompatibility. (Rh is just the + or - part of blood type; you and your DH are both Rh neg). Before the advent of a drug called Rhogam, an Rh negative woman carrying an Rh positive baby could develop antibodies to the baby, but it would really only happen late in pregnancy or in subsequent pg after the mother had been exposed to the fetal blood. Since you and hubby are both Rh negative, I'm pretty sure you cannot have an Rh postive baby. Did you receive a Rhogam shot after your 11wk loss?
There are lots of things that can cause repeated chemicals, but I don't think blood type is one of them. Have you had a full work up?

  • Hi! Believe it or not, my inlaws told me my DH was rh positive and so I was given the rhogam shot. Soon after the shot, I developed shingles followed by 5 months of painful, unknown rashes, unrelated to the shingles. No doctor nor dermatologist could give me any answers. I decided to retest my husbands blood type because I really don't want to go through that again and sure enough he's rh negative. So I've just been wondering if there could be an issue with two different rh negative blood types when ttc
