Crib Chatter

Hello April mamas, I'm starting to research cribs. Looking at everything from Ikea, to the Babyletto, to full 4 stage convertible cribs. What are you eyeing, or what do you own?

Moms with more than 1+ kid, what worked/didn't work for you?!
Thanks in advance for sharing!

  • I am eyeing anything with storage! I haven't decided on the convertible ones yet, but it would be nice to have.

  • DD has a convertible one.. she never slept in it as a baby bc she hated the crib.. now she is 4 and has it set up as a full size bed, and loves it. I'm happy it wasn't a total wasted purchase as it was nothing more than an expensive toy bin for the first couple years.. it's really sturdy too as my husband or me usually lays down in it to read to her at night.

  • We got a lovely laundry storage device from Target and then switched to a full size mattress on the floor. I had zero intentions to bed share, wasn't even sure on cosleeping because his room is steps away, but sleep deprivation is a powerful persuader. He slept in our bed, therefore I slept in our bed.  Dream feeds are magical.
  • I'm lucky in that I got a free crib from my sister as my nephew is now in a big boy bed. It's a convertible and she used it as a crib and toddler bed and liked it.

  • The crib was the one thing we splurged on and got pretty much based on looks.  I figured they all function the same. I did not get one that converts to a full size bed (I didn't even really know this was a thing), but we don't have room for that anyway.

  • We have a convertible crib that my dad got us from Target and we love it. DS still sleeps in it as a crib for now, we plan on replacing the mattress for new LO and transitioning DS straight to a twin bed before April. I don't see the point in using it as a toddler bed at this point and don't want to buy a crib.

  • We got a convertible so we would never have to buy another bed for him. Pretty much everything we got was convertible, bed, mattress, car seat. I really hate shopping and wanted to never have to do it again. I just didn't think about what would happen if we had another one. Now I have to get him new stuff so she can use his old stuff.

But I may not get him a bed. He refuses to sleep in his toddler bed. Ever since we converted his crib, at about 12 months, he has crawled out and slept on the floor. Now he won't even start in the bed, he lays right on the floor beside his bed and goes to sleep. I'm thinking of just getting him a mattress for the floor, but I don't think he would sleep on it.

  • I have the basic IKEA crib and we won't be able to test the convertible portion yet since DS1 will be moved up to a twin bed after LO2 is born around 20 months. It's no frills and does the job.

  • We have a convertible crib for DS but ended up deciding to get him a new set of furniture and reuse the crib for this LO. We love it but definitely invest in some sort of rail cover.  My mom sewed one once DS was around 10 months as he started to chew on the rail.  I still think the ability to convert it later on is appealing enough and for us the price difference wasn't that significant to get one that converts.

  • We still have our convertible crib from DS. He used it for about 14 months. Then I had enough of him being in our room. It was either, move him into the toddler bed that we already had in the boys room, or move the crib into the already packed boys room. I know 14 months is pretty young for a toddler bed, but DS took to it right away. He didn't get in and out throughout the night and we ALL slept better. I'm excited to set the crib up and use it for this LO. And hopefully continue to use it as he grows.

  • Definitely agree with a rail cover. My niece chewed hers up so bad. I made one for ours once he could pull himself up. Just went and got fleece from a store and did it myself instead of buying one.

  • We have a mini crib because of the size and the girls needing to share a room. If we can get a bigger place and each child has their own room then we'll get an IKEA crib--simple and not too expensive. Last kid and all ;)

  • I did forget to mention the rail cover. The back was too high for her to ever reach buy we had one on the front.. I would have bought one even if the crib didn't convert as my niece constantly bounced in hers and would hit herself on the side and it just made it a bit softer.. and I don't want my kid eating bits of crib.

  • We have a PBK Kendall crib. It has the rail cover. It's so well made and perfect. We got the conversion kit, but we never used it bc we ended up buying DD1 a toddler bed when we were pregnant with DD2. So we didn't need it after all. The crib still looks new and two kids have used it for 3 years each.

  • We have two convertible cribs. DS is using his as a crib at the moment and we'll convert it to a toddler bed eventually. We bought the second convertible for this new LO. We debated moving DS to a twin or even an inexpensive toddler bed come April but he's happy in the crib so I'm going to keep him confined as long as possible. We are planning a third kid in a couple years so we'll move DS to a twin at that time and but the third baby into the crib.

We never co-slept or room shared so a good crib was essential. I have lots of friends that used pack n' plays or portable sleep spaces in the early days until they figured out what sleeping arrangements actually look like. Its important to remember that every family is different and every baby is too. Its important to really consider what is going to work for you even if the majority of people are doing something different.
  • We bought a convertible crib and the rails for DS. He slept in it as a crib and toddler bed, but we transitioned him into a new room using our guest room furniture and are leaving the crib for the baby. I was cautioned by friends with older children to not only buy the rails when you buy the crib, but to actually assemble the full size bed because if there are any issues the parts may not be available years down the road. I am glad that we took that advice because when we assembled it one of the rails didn't fit correctly and we had to exchange it.
  • We have the cheapie $100 crib from ikea and it held up great for the 18 months DS was in it. It will turn into a toddler bed once you need to transition out of it and we've been really happy with it.

We are using a pack and play as a crib and placing it in our bedroom for a few months. We will see how that goes. I have friends whose kids will outgrow their cribs in less than a year. I will rather wait and see what we need before expending too much on something that we might get for free from friends.
  • We have a full convertible crib for DS and all the conversion pieces (though didn't think to take them out of the box, now I'm nervous!).  I'm planning on getting a new complete set for baby so each kid has their own to grow with.  We used rail protectors so the crib still looks brand new.
  • We were graciously gifted a beautiful solid wood convertible crib. It was only ever used for naps from 5 -15 months. My son co slept first in a bassinet in our room and then I bedshare with him. At 15 months he decided he hated the crib so we switched him to a twin mattress on the floor and he has slept there night and day since. I'm planning on taking the side off the crib and using it to sidecar up to our king size bed. we plan on co sleeping for at least a year again this time around. All in all, I'd say a convertible crib is my favourite since they can potentially use it for many years to come.

  • We have the Simmons Kids SlumberTime 4-in-1 Convertible Crib in Grey from Target.  We will also be getting the matching 6 drawer dresser. It is very sturdy and solid.  I'm excited about the fact we can use it for many years to come.  We do have a bassinet for the baby to sleep in for the first few weeks or so in our room.  The crib and dresser are each 299$.  We went with items we knew could last a long time and grow with the baby.
