No Movement?

Hi ladies. My baby is turning one in just under two weeks. He has no interest in movement. He doesn't crawl, which isn't a huge deal by itself but then babies are usually active in other ways. Not only does he not crawl (he does push himself back with his hands on his belly) but he also doesn't pull himself up, scoot on his butt, or go from a sitting position to tummy. If toys are out of reach, he just leaves them. He has no interest in trying to go get them. He occasionally goes up on his knees but only for a few seconds. He's an incredibly good natured and patient baby in other ways. Is it just that and he's taking his time? Or should I push for an evaluation or something with my pediatrician? I'll definitely be bringing it up at his one year appointment. I'm a little nervous because he has a connective tissue disorder (though they haven't found which specific one yet) and has vision problems because of this.

Re: No Movement?

  • Does he ever get into crawling position? On average I believe babies are supposed to start crawling around 7 or 8 months. I would definitely bring it up to your Ped. Hopefully there is nothing wrong and he is just lazy ;)

  • He gets up on his hands and knees from his belly for about 5 seconds at a time and then goes back down. He doesn't go from sitting to belly. I'm not sure which of those you mean by crawling position.
  • I mean hands and knees. Some babies skip the crawling phase and go straight to walking. I'm sure when he is ready he will start getting around.

My son doesn't crawl.  He does roll, army crawls, and pushes himself to get where he wants.  I called my pediatrician and the pediatrician said that some babies never crawl on all 4s.  Crawling is also considered moving from point a to point b by rolling, scooting, etc.  He will pull himself up, but it takes him a minute.  I felt much better after I called.
At his 9 month check up, the pediatrician told us that half of the babies crawl by 9 months, some later and some never do.
You should give them a call if you're worried.
  • Definitely talk to your doc, but its probably fine.  Average age for crawling is 6-10 months, but its not a concern until after 15 months (according to my doc).  Also PPs are right, 'all 4s' crawling isn't the only thing!  Babies scoot, army crawl, and roll, and as long as its purposeful movement it counts.  My kiddo rolled and pushed herself backwards for the longest time to move around.  Also yeah, some babies skip crawling all together and just go strait to walking.

Is your kid on the big side?  Every boy I know who was big as a baby/toddler crawled and walked super late, past a year old at least.  Takes more muscle to move a bigger body!
