Children at first appt?

has anyone ever taken their kiddos to their first appointment?!  We don't have anyone to watch my DD so she will have to go.  I want my DH with me when I do the ultrasound so that means my DD will have to be in there too.  She's 2 1/2..... Any suggestions? Tips?

Re: Children at first appt?

  • I've brought my 2 toddlers with me to a couple appointments already.  They are almost 2 and almost 4.  I bring snacks, drinks, a toy or my phone to distract them.  The intake apt was a little hard because my 2 year old was restless he also freaked out at my blood work but another nurse came in to play with him.  At my regular ob apt they were both so good and played and snacked for my ultrasound too.  I had one vaginal ultrasound that I brought them too without help and my 2 year old screamed the whole time so I brought my DH the second time and he did fine.  I never had to take my DD to apts when I was pregnant with DS so this was all new to me.

  • My OB just suggested that I bring a stroller so DD has somewhere to sit during exams. Otherwise she said it would be fine, especially since the appointments are usually only 15 minutes.

  • I have had to bring my kids. It should be fine.
  • My MW practice is so accommodating, they have books and toys for kids to play with. Later in pregnancy they like to involve siblings like having them help use the Doppler and measure the fundus. The first appt would probably be the toughest since it's longer and boring for a little one. What entertains your kid at a restaurant or on a long car ride? I'd bring that. You could also have your husband wait with her while you do questions/blood work (are they going to surprise you with a pap too? I've had that happen) and just have him come in for the u/s. Toddlers that age usually like flipping through waiting room magazines and looking at the pictures.
  • I know the practice I go to doesn't allow anyone under the age of 16 in the room for ultrasounds, but otherwise I think bringing my daughter would be just fine.
  • Thanks ladies!  I was kind of starting to panic but my dd is super chill usually so hopefully it ok. I haven't been told of any age limits at previous appt not have I noticed any signs saying an age limit. If all
else fails I guess my DH just won't be in the room for the ultrasound. Not the end of the world but of course I want him in there
  • I can happily easily bring my kids to my prenatal appts; my midwives' office is casual and quiet and kid friendly. My old OB group would have been harder... no policy against them but long waists, typical boring dr office which isn't good for my wild animals.

Ive never been to an us where children are allowed though, and in case of bad news I still probably a safe policy. I'd make sure they are permitted immed for the screening before you bring them,

  • @pghctwife I don't have a choice but to
bring her. My DH is meeting me at the office so of all else fails he will be with her and I'll do the ultrasound by myself
  • My first appointments are typically just going over info with the nurse, so kids wouldn't be a big deal there. Most appointments after that have doppler checks on heartbeat, bp, etc. so those wouldn't be to bad if you had your kiddos there. The only ones I would avoid are once you get to the weekly appointments at the end with cervical checks or any ultrasounds.

  • We are taking DS tomorrow to our first appointment because it is so early in the day - otherwise my husband wouldnt be able to come with me. Fingers crossed he isn't bouncing off the walls.
