Brown Spotting In Underwear

Good morning ladies. This is my third pregnancy (I have 1 daughter & we lost our second baby due to a NTD).

I'm right at 18 weeks & have had 4 incidences of brown spotting in my underwear over the last 2 weeks. I figured it was from exertion, but called my doc anyway & she had me come in for an ultrasound to check my cervical length. Doc says it's nice & long, then told me not to have sex for a week. Well, wouldn't you know, I ended up having a dream that made me have a huge orgasm (it woke me up) & the next day I had spotting again. Now I'm super paranoid about doing anything. I just want to sit on  the couch and try to think unsexy thoughts for the next 6 months.

Has anyone else dealt with this? Please tell me it's normal & I'll be able to hold onto this pregnancy until the baby is ready.

Re: Brown Spotting In Underwear

  • I know brown spotting can be normal. Your cervix is very sensitive right now. I had brown spotting that lead to red bleeding...turns out I have placenta previa. But your doctor would have been able to see that on the ultrasound. Sounds normal to me.

  • Spotting can be normal.  I had bright red blood today but it wasn't consistent, no cramping, etc.  it is worrisome because I have had 3 MCs.  That said, it happens once a week and I have talked with my doctor.  They way she explained it is that the cervix is like a sponge with millions of full blood vessels.  If you do something to pop one (over exertion), you may see brown or red blood.  My son was under a year when I got pregnant with this baby so something so simple as carrying him could so it.  She said as long as there's no clotting, cramping and not consistent (3 c's) I shouldn't get too stressed.  If you are concerned you should call tomorrow and go in.  The good news is brown blood = old blood.  Stay positive!

@cararuru it is possible that your placenta is very close (or touching) to your cervix which could cause this brown spotting. if this is the case, 90% of the time it fixes itself as your uterus grows and it doesn't harm the baby.  the main "restriction" when you have this is "pelvic rest" aka no sex or orgasms. boo.
  • I'm jealous of your dream orgasm. I've never had that particular experience!

As to the spotting, I agree with the pp. Out in a call to your doctor saying it happened again: they may want to do an ultrasound. But brown is okay....brown is old blood.

  • I had some red blood and brown spotting as well. It's very scary but doesn't always mean something is wrong. If you worry.. contact your midwife-gyno etc.. being calm is important.. so if you need an extra scan for that or listen to the heartbeat.. do it!

My midwife suggested listening to the heartbeat and an extra ultrasound to make me more sure everything was ok.. being pregnant/becoming a mother is taking care of yourself both mentally and physically.
  • I was having the same spotting a couple weeks back (im 22 weeks rn) and I asked my doctor about it. She said the same thing---that it was from sex. And she was right. Not that I stopped having sex, but I noticed that it was only happening the next morning after we had sex. Eventually it stopped though. She said it was normal. I was also having minor nosebleeds too. There's just a lot of blood and changes now in our bodies. But I totally understand your paranoia I was the same way when it was happening. But it will eventually go away.
  • Thank you everyone! Your comments are helping. I'm on my 5th week of spotting and it feels like no end in sight. I have my 20 wk ultrasound Thursday to find out if I have placenta previa. But for now, my doctor said it's probably just my cervix.
  • ugh spotting is the worst. thinking of you, I'm sure everything will be okay! I had it once after sexy time with DH and it freaked me right out. we haven't done it since cause it made me so anxious. Sending you good T & P!!

  • I had some spotting a few weeks ago too. Ended up being placenta previa for me.

It can be completely normal. Hoping they find an answer.
