High-Risk Pregnancy

Preeclampsia?

Hello everyone, i wrote this on my birth month board and just discovered this section and maybe I will get more responses.

I just did a 24 hour urine collection a few days ago. I am signed up for the lab to get the results emailed to me. I received my results this morning and it says my protein/creation ratio is 186. The chart says anything above 84 is considered high. Does anyone have any idea what these numbers mean? My doctors office usually calls later in the day with testing results so I won't get a call until about 3....but I would assume if it were serious they would be calling right away? Does anyone have any experience with this or what it means? Could it possibly be preeclampsia? (I know no one here can say for sure what it is...just wondering if anyone has any idea what these numbers mean)

The numbers are confusing me since there are three results.
Protein/Creatinine ratio - 186 which is very out of range
Protein value - 120 - in range
Creatinine value - 0.65 - in range.

I just went looking for my results for my last 24 hour urine collection results which was in June. My Protein/Creatinine ratio was 82. Huge difference to what it is now. I am 30 weeks tomorrow. I have high blood pressure and have been taking medicine for it since about 12 weeks. This past week it has been higher than usual and I am definitely feeling different. My MFM even warned me that my body may start reacting differently to my high blood pressure.

Re: Preeclampsia?

  • I had pre-e... it's no joke! If I were you I'd call your doctor to explain these results to you. Watch out for random sever swelling (especially of the face), pain in the right upper side of your abdomen, headache not made better by Tylenol, or visual disturbances. If you even THINK that you have these symptoms go to the ER immediately. Now all that scary stuff out of the way... I had INSANE bp and I believe my protein was way way way higher than yours and I stayed pregnant for 5 more weeks and would have gone longer if my bp hadn't been crazy.

  • My doctor actually never mentioned these results to me. I had an appointment on Monday and she was worried about my higher than normal blood pressure and sent me straight to the hospital. After a few tests they told me I have mild preeclampsia They didn't seem too concerned about it, though. It was only mentioned when I saw my discharge papers give information about preeclamspia and I had to ask if i had it. but I know it can get severe fast and I need to watch for symptoms. I also got two steroid shots for lung development in case he comes early.

  • I lost my first baby due to preeclampsia. Please go see doctor immediately. It is very dangerous. Take care!
  • I had mild pre-e last pregnancy diagnosed at 30w. I lasted until 34w when my bp shot up and they delivered me. I was told they no longer deliver on urine protein alone that it must come with the bp consistently over 160/90.

I had had the steroid shots and they did great work. My 34weeker is now a happy, healthy 2yo with no delays. I have my fingers and toes crossed that your body holds out a long as possible!  Good luck!!
  • @ohstars your situation sounds almost identical to mine! My little guy is 14 months!
  • I had this with my now 5 year old. Preeclampsia can escalate very quickly, it did with her and almost took both of our lives. Thank god for emergency c sections. Please keep a close eye on your blood pressure, and make sure to write it down. It saved our lives because mine suddenly spiked and I ended up having to be induced. I was told to relax, stay off my feet, lots of water, watch the blood pressure, and to watch sodium intake. Keep an eye on the swelling, and if you get bad headaches you need to contact the dr. Hang in there. How far along are you now?
  • I had pre-e with my daughter. I just remember them telling me my protein count was 5,406 mg/L and anyone with severe pre-e has over 100 mg/L :-/ it was scary times. Your dr will be in touch if it's extremely urgent and will give you more info. Did you call the office and ask for clarification?

  • I can't stress enough what  laurenneeph said. At 27 weeks I started to swell really bad and was getting headaches, at 28 weeks I was having pain right under my ribs which I thought was heartburn ( it was my liver failing). I was throwing up from the pain.  I went to the ER and was diagnosed with preeclampsia which quickly turned into HELLP syndrome. I had to deliver my baby via emergency c section at 29 weeks! We both almost died. Trust your gut and go in right away if you have any of those symptoms!
