Re: UO Thursday October 27th

  • I was trying to think of an unpopular opinion and I could not think of one to save my life right now so I googled unpopular opinion for some inspiration, see if I agree with some and I found the unpopular opinion Reddit... that was a mistake.

So I guess my (un)popular opinion is that white male privilege is VERY real and that cesspool of a website is full of it.

Or on a lighter note, I did not like Inside Out... it is the only Disney/Pixar movie I don't like, they usually make amazing movies (not counting sequels) but that one I just can't.

  • @aleeyna Thanks for starting this. i love reading this thread .

I loved Inside Out. I really think it made me a better parent. as a parent you always want your child to be happy and try to get rid of the other emotions as quickly as possible but that movie taught me to embrace all of my daughters emotions and feelings...she is highly emotional and I was doing her a disservice by not fully embracing them.

My unpopular opinion - I'm all for respecting others cultures and history but this whole thing that we can't wear certain costumes due to cultural appropriation just doesn't make sense to me. it's a costume.

It is not because of cultural appropriation it is because it's just plain offensive. A whole rich and diverse culture is made into a stereotypical costume and that it is disrespectful.
Most people wearing those type of costumes (geisha, Native American, Arabian princess, African "tribal", Mexican, ninja or samurai are a few examples I can think of) don't mean any harm or want to mock or offend people on purpose. But the fact they don't realize that it is offensive to people from that particular culture is the problem.

For example you can wear a Kimono even if you are not Japanese and do so in a respectful way but wearing a kimono, painting your face white and your lips red to be a "Geisha" is disrespectful of that culture.

Cultural appropriation is another thing entirely, people who use that term use it to define when someone uses elements of a culture they don't belong to and claim it as their own. You can appreciate someone else culture, no one is saying you can't.* But making it into a costume is not appreciation.

*Well some people are, but that is a whole other debate.

If you are interested I would be more than happy to give you links to articles written by people of various cultures explaining much better and more eloquently than me just why it is disrespectful.

  • While I understand that it can be offensive I don't think that's people's intentions as you said and I also wonder where you draw the line. If your kids have a thanksgiving play and their "costumes" are that of sterotypical Indians and also pilgrims is that ok? And if so what's the difference in wearing that same costume on Halloween.

Also related to that I saw a news story the other day that an elementary school school cancelled all of their halloween festivities and kids were not allowed to wear their costumes to school because not everyone celebrates Halloween. I think they should have let the kids who wanted to wear costumes wear them and the ones that didn't want to or didn't celebrate it didn't have to.

  • For your first point, yes even in the context of thanksgiving dressing up as stereotypical Indians is offensive, if not even more so, considering the history of the holiday and the genocide of Native Americans.

But yes people don't have the intention to be offensive, but that does not mean they are not, that's why it is important to have those discussions with kids (and adults too really).

As for your second point I completely agree that they should of allowed the kids who wanted to wear costumes to do so, not everyone needs to participate if they don't want to, it is a shame to cancel a holiday because not every one celebrates it. But it would also be a good occasion to educate kids on which costumes are appropriate and which ones are not and why.

  • My unpopular opinion, at least I think it is unpopular, is that it annoys me that baby clothes primarily come in sets.  When looking for cute fleece tops or sweatshirts, it seems like only plain ones are separate and the pattern or design ones primarily come with a onesie and pants. I tried three different stores and the options of separates for pattern or design sweatshirts and fleeces were pretty limited unless I also wanted the onesie and pants. Sometimes that's ok but not always.
  • I agree. ito frustrating too when one pair of pants comes with three onesies. I had to go out and buy more pants and just hoped they would match. And of course , the pants came in sets.
  • @Laraeq I don't think this is an unpopular opinion at all, or at least it should not be. I live in Canada so I consider myself very lucky to not have to pay for medical expenses, yes we pay more taxes but it is nothing in comparison to what it would cost to pay hospitals directly. 67K is insane O.o

  • Omg! How do people in the US have children! I cannot believe the medical costs that people have mentioned on here. I am a Canadian as well, and had a bill for a whopping $30 due to upgrading to a private room.
  • Mine is about $5500 after insurance. Would've been free if I had had him st one of the hospitals in the network I work for but they don't offer midwives. So we went to another facility.

@Laraeq I am astonished at your cost. Where in the world did you give birth? The Vatican?! Buckingham Palace?! Damn woman that is outrageous.
  • @jenkar01 It was the top of the Eiffel Tower! Haha! Just kidding. I gave birth at a medical school/research institute/hospital in San Francisco (a city where everything is overpriced!). The women's and children's hospitals are new facilities so I guess this is how they are paying for construction. Don't get me wrong, the hospital is BEAUTIFUL and the care was outstanding, but the price certainly is steep!

I am am so jealous of you Canadian ladies. I wish things weren't so backwards here in the states.
  • @Laraeq holy crap that's a lot.  My out of pocket max is $1000 and I think I've only paid about $700.  I know we are lucky to have really great coverage but our actual charges prior to insurance are less than your out of pocket and I live in the Chicago suburbs and delivered at one of the best hospitals.
  • @berh2001 This is kinda the point of my UO. Insurance is just screwed up. Your out of pocket maximum is less than my deductible ($1900) and 12 times less than my out of pocket maximum. Why? I assume because my employer care more about profits than employees and selected the cheapest, crappiest insurance plans possible.

As an individual there is absolutely nothing I can do to make this situation better short of quitting. The problem with that is that I work for the market leader in my industry. Moving to another firm would mean a step backwards and with less prestigious clients and opportunities. That would ultimately mean a smaller paycheck for me.

This is why I want universal healthcare. Companies shouldn't dictate my ability to see a doctor or get medical treatment. Capitalism gets in the way. An admin in my office had to forgo an albuteral inhaler because with our shitty insurance it was $130 and she didn't want to spend the money. That should never ever happen!
  • Wow that is nuts!! I cannot imagine $67,000 for a vaginal non complicated birth. Then again I haven't gotten my bills yet. I got one for Molly the other day and it was about $3,800 before instance. I owed just under $300 but it must have been billed before my insurance deductible went up. I guess we will see what the bill for me comes to...?

My UO - I dislike Jimmy John's...I don't get the hype. Subway is way better...and where I live we have awesome sub places. How does JJ's stay in business??
  • @rock1cherry it's all in the bread.  Every time I go there because I'm craving it, I think why the hell did I just pay that much for a sandwich I could have made at home....but the bread yum!
  • Really @berh2001maybe I just had crappy jimmy johns then. It was when I visited Utah a few years ago. Had it once and never again. :(
  • Omg I love Jimmy John's and it is so the bread. I would eat just the bread.
  • I'm not a fan of Jimmy Johns either! Togos is my favorite but they're only on the West coast.
  • Togos  is good, but we are a Jersey Mike's family.
  • Subway is gross! I'm a fan of firehouse subs or Quiznos.
I agree on all this health ins stuff. I'll owe about 4k and I work for the government!
  • I'm not sure if this is an unpopular opinion or not but I am so excited that Hallmark has started playing their Christmas movies it's my holiday guilty pleasure

  • @drabong88 I am watching one right now. I love those movies and was so excited for them to start.
  • I don't like Jimmy Johns at all. I don't get the hype

  • Not bragging, but my insurance took care of all the costs. We wouldn't have been able to afford a baby otherwise, and finances were the big thing that made us decide to try now versus later. Sometimes I wish we had waited, but Sylvia is perfect and I wouldn't give her up for anything in the world.

My UO is about screen time. My husband and I usually watch something while we feed baby. Mostly as a sanity break. We've caught her watching the TV too, so I try to keep it limited to like an hour at most, but I don't believe it'll end up rotting her brain. She gets plenty of active playtime during the day, lots of cuddles, we talk and sing to her, and she's developmentally normal and happy.

In the beginning, when she was super small, I used to keep Netflix going while breastfeeding her because it was the only thing I could do and she wasn't as interested in it.
