Nursing while pregnant check in anyone?

my June 15 board we did a semi regular touch base check in support thread for nursing in pregnancy, I know a few of us are.

2) plans to wean?
3) open to tandem or no?
4) any challenges you are facing as a result of your pregnancy? How is it going?

    1) how old is your nursling? 16 months
    2) plans to wean? Not at the moment, we'll see how we both feel as time goes on. My oldest self weandd at the end of my pregnancy and my second I have to push it
    3) open to tandem or no? Not sure yet. I was for my second and was not for my third, just how I felt at the time.
    4) any challenges you are facing as a result of your pregnancy? How is it going? Nothing yet but I'm anticipating the pain and low supply soon

  • 1) how old is your nursling?

    21 mos

    2) plans to wean?

my goal is til 2 years but that's not a hard limit either

    3) open to tandem or no?

I tandem nursed my first 2 but had to wean the oldest (he was 2) after a couple weeks because it triggered pretty intense D-MER.

    4) any challenges you are facing as a result of your pregnancy? How is it going?

Just the past few days the girl has been all over me. Not sure if she's teething or if I have a supply dip already, she normally only nurses once or twice a day. Making me a little crazy.

  • 1) how old is your nursling? 18 months
    2) plans to wean? If he does on his own or it starts to become an issue
    3) open to tandem or no? Yes although I havent thought too much about it.. i keep assuming he'll wean and he keeps not weaning lol
    4) any challenges you are facing as a result of your pregnancy? How is it going? No challenges yet although he does seem to want it more... we were down to once a day but lately its been about three times a day
  • @pghctwife - thanks for starting this! It will be nice to have some support.

    1) how old is your nursling? 10 months.

    2) plans to wean? I'm planning on letting her self-wean whenever she is ready, but I'm guessing this pregnancy will move things along. I definitely want to make it to 1 year, though.

    3) open to tandem or no? Absolutely! Baby girl loves food so I don't think she'll go much longer than a year anyway.

    4) any challenges you are facing as a result of your pregnancy? How is it going?

Not really. Thought my supply was dipping, but I just wasn't being consistent with pumping. My nipples hurt, but not while DD is nursing.

  • I'm also June '15.

    1) how old is your nursling? 16 months next week

    2) plans to wean? Hoping she'll do it herself soon...we only nurse once per side per day now, both in the evening

    3) open to tandem or no? Rather not but if it comes to that I will

    4) any challenges you are facing as a result of your pregnancy? How is it going? Everything seems ok so far...DD isn't acting like my supply has dropped so that's good.  Haven't pumped since July so have no idea what she normally gets or what she's getting now.  Boobs don't hurt yet but I'm only 5 weeks so we'll see what the next few weeks will bring.
  • @mombod Rory is nursing more too. I'm guessing my supply dropped a bit and that's why. He is also asking for water more

  • 1) how old is your nursling? 26 months
    2) plans to wean?  Yes, I have been trying to limit DD to nursing at just nap and bed, and also keeping nursing to in her bed and not on the couch.
    3) open to tandem or no?  I would prefer not to tandem nurse.  I hope she gets over this "mine, mine, mine" stage.
    4) any challenges you are facing as a result of your pregnancy? How is it going?  Sore nipples!

  • 1) how old is your nursling? 20 months

    2) plans to wean? When she's ready

    3) open to tandem or no? I thought so, but lately I've been thinking no.

    4) any challenges you are facing as a result of your pregnancy? How is it going? I feel like my supply is dipping, but I think that's more due to my nausea and lack of appetite than anything. Trying to stay up on the water. So far, the pain isn't any worse than PMS and I'm really hoping it doesn't get worse. I'm NOT looking forward to aversion.

    2) plans to wean?  Yes, we are down to twice a day, morning and evening, which is fantastic!
    3) open to tandem or no?  No and no. i want my boobs back before I start all over again! We've had a good run.
    4) any challenges you are facing as a result of your pregnancy? How is it going?  Pretty powerful aversion set in early on. I never had any issues nursing my first but pregnancy has made it a lot tougher. It just feels aweful and i want her to stop. Ive started counting to 10 when i need her to end the session and she's been doing really well with that. She doesnt fight it and usually pops off before i reach 10.

  • Just popping in to say rock on, mommas! I wish I had been able to continue nursing but I was one of those lucky birds that didn't get my cycle back until I cold turkey weaned.

I feel guilty that our second baby (or desire for a second baby) has already began impacting my son.

Anywho, keep it up! I'll be cheering from the sidelines.

  • 1) how old is your nursling?15 months tomorrow

    2) plans to wean? A few months ago she went from eating every two hours to now only nursing morning and before bed at night... I figure this is why I was able to finally get pregnant.

    3) open to tandem or no? That's was my goal! But she's beginning to become less and less interested, I wonder if she sees baby nursing if she will want to again.

    4) any challenges you are facing as a result of your pregnancy? How is it going? Everything is going well :)
  • So glad to see this thread, nursing during pregnancy is definitely not the easiest!
    1) 33 months. I had to count. She's 3 in Feb.
    2) I'm letting her self wean, but I'm not offering at all. She wants to nurse 12x a day, but I say no unless it's naps or bedtime, or post-injury.
    3) I'm definitely open to tandem, but I'm fully aware that the milk will likely dry up in the next couple weeks, so I'm thinking she will wean before baby is here.
    4) No challenges as of yet, feeling nauseous but not bad *yet*.

    1) how old is your nursling?

    10 months

    2) plans to wean?

Yes at a year definitely but possibly sooner.

    3) open to tandem or no?

No way. I can barely handle the one.

    4) any challenges you are facing as a result of your pregnancy?

I'm down to pumping once a day and using my freezer stash which I had hoped I wouldn't need to get into for another month but pregnancy has not only made it painful but my supply has dropped immensely.

    How is it going?

from the beginning I only planned to go to a year and it's been tough but I know it's good for her so I'm pushing through but I cannot wait to be done. I'm looking forward to a few months of having them to myself lol. And I think DH is too. They've been off limits for him since I started breastfeeding. Just felt too weird to me.

  • 1) how old is your nursling? 16 months
    2) plans to wean? None, so far, but maybe if my breasts are as tender as they were last pregnancy. We'll see.
    3) open to tandem or no? I'm open, but I would want to consult with a lactation specialist first, especially since I plan to exclusively BF until 6 months like I did with DS
    4) any challenges you are facing as a result of your pregnancy? How is it going? I'm expecting my supply to drop with the usual pregnancy hormone fluctuations, but we'll see.

    3) open to tandem or no?
    4) any challenges you are facing as a result of your pregnancy? How is it going?
    1) my baby is 15 months old
    2) hoping she will self wean, not looking promising
    3) I am open to tandem if she will wants it, but I'm worried about nursing two and working full time
    4) once I hit 6 weeks my nipples became unbearably painful.  Her nursing doesn't bother me, but she likes to hold the other one, and pinch it while she nurses and it is excruciating.  Also, my supply dropped immediately.  It's one way I knew I was as pregnant!
  • 1) how old is your nursling?
    14 mos

    2) plans to wean?
Yes. In the last few weeks I've stopped nursing before naps and bedtime. We are down to once in the morning, and baby doesn't seem to miss it at all and is even loosing interest in the morning session.

    3) open to tandem or no?
    no

    4) any challenges you are facing as a result of your pregnancy? How is it going?
no challenges, but pregnancy is probably why she's loosing interest.

    2) plans to wean? Hoping i dry up around 2nd tri and she gets disinterested
    3) open to tandem or no? No desire to tandem feed
    4) any challenges you are facing as a result of your pregnancy? How is it going? I feel like my boobs are a mess.  Engorged if I try to skip a feeding or shooting pains randomly.  This is my 4thh and the first I have experienced any of this.  I usually have to wean to get pregnant.

    2) plans to wean? No. Goal is to do a minimum of 15 months.
    3) open to tandem or no? Yes! However would only be keen on 1 or 2 feeds a day for the older one.
    4) any challenges you are facing as a result of your pregnancy? Lack of energy and sickness. Hard work with a bubba  that never stops

    1) 12 months
    2) I'm letting him self-wean, hoping to make it to 2 years.
    3) yes
    4) So far this pregnancy has been similar to my last one. Feeling tired and slightly nauseous.
  • Not sure if this qualifies but I exclusively pumped from 7 months on with my son who is now 12 months. I have about 100 oz in the freezer left for him but I have decided to stop pumping and dry up due to this pregnancy. My goal was to get thru the winter months but my supply immediately took a hit with this pregnancy. I'm down to pumping once a day and hope to totally be done in the next week or so. Have had some sharp pains in my breasts the last couple days.
  • 1) how old is your nursling? FIVE months next week (omg!)

    2) plans to wean? Ideally no but want to learn about the risks of premature birth since I got pregnant when my first was only 3 months old

    3) open to tandem or no? Can't imagine how I would do this and work full time as I can barely keep up with the supply demands for my first.

    4) any challenges you are facing as a result of your pregnancy? How is it going? My supply is JUST barely keeping up but I can't tell if it is due to pregnancy or due to the fact that I just went back to work two weeks ago and now I'm pumping.

We knew we wanted two kids close together but weren't thinking it would happen this fast!!
  • @Allybiery good for you!! That absolutely counts, pumping is HARD.

I've been EPing since 6 months but my supply dropped significantly after I got pregnant. I'm down to 1x a day too and may go down to less soon because I'm not pumping much. Plus it's really hurting now. My DD is only 10.5 months but I have about a months worth in freezer. I started giving her formula to help stretch it out to 12 months. Pumping is tough!
  • 1) nursing my son who just turned one last week.
    2) I don't really have specific plans to wean but I'm trying to make an effort to make sure he's getting a lot of solids, and I've introduced almond milk.
    3) I don't really want to tandem nurse! I'll see how I feel as I get more pregnant but being needed as a food source by 2 humans seems a little overwhelming.
    4) I haven't seen any changes yet with DS nursing habits!
  • This is sort of related to nursing while pregnant, but also just a nursing question in general that I figured you ladies could help me with.

Every time DD pops out a new tooth my nipples take a beating for a few days. Did you guys experience this? Is there anything I can do to stop this from happening? Eventually it seems like she gets used to the new teeth or I do, but teeth 7 & 8 just came in and it's particularly painful this time.

  • @babytuck15 Is it painful because she's grazing/teething on the nipple or like raw from overuse because she wants the comfort?
  • @thankfully She's nursing normally but it feels like the teeth are rubbing against my nipple. She likes to pull on me while she nurses which kind of drags her teeth across my nipples. It usually feels better a week or so after the new tooth comes in, but my nips are already sensitive so I was just wondering if there was anything I could do in the meantime.

  • @Praying41 yes it is tough! Sounds like you've done a great job!
  • @babytuck15 I'd try to readjust the latch in that scenario. If it starts to hurt I switch sides and pay more attention (a lazy latch when they get older is common in my experience). The pulling may be to try to encourage let down, due to slowed flow. Does she do it when she starts or near the end? If that's the case I'd try massaging the breast a little while she nurses to help things along and if she does it at the end, switch to the fresh side. I do a lot of switching back and forth when I'm feeling sensitive. If you think she's doing it on purpose to provide relief I'd try medicating.
  • I was on the June 2015 board too when pregnant with my son :) still nursing him at 18 months (he was a premie hence the older age for June 2015 due date). Just once a day in the morning. I plan to nurse him however long he needs and wants and am open to tandem nursing too. This pregnancy has been rough with lots of bleeds due to a SCH but saw the heartbeat yesterday which was reassuring. Also lots of all day sickness, but this time around on Zofran right away to help me keep weight on vs off.
  • Thank you, @thankfully ! I just noticed a molar popped through as well as two more in the front. My poor girl can't catch a break and neither can my boobs!
