Let's talk about sex(ual contraception)

What type of contraception (if necessary) is everyone using when they finally get the green light for sexual relations?

We used tracking and the pull out method successfully for two years until we decided to try for the BFP. But that was with the thought in the back of our mind that a kid would be welcome eventually. But now that we're unsure about a second kid, I think I'm going to try an IUD. I never liked hormonal birth control, so I'm hoping the IUD doesn't mess with my emotions the same way. Also my breastfeeding course said EBF is 99% effective to not get pregnant, but my discharge paperwork was contradictory. So confusing.

I kniw now we talked about this before, but I figured we could revisit, now that we're at that point!

Re: Let's talk about sex(ual contraception)

  • EBF is NOT 99% effective birth control :) but it's a great way to get a surprise baby.

Im getting the mirena IUD. I assume you're referring to the copper IUD (paragard) being non-hormonal? Because mirena does use progestin.

  • I think I'm going with the shot while I'm BF. It's good for 3 months I believe and I can get it at my 6 week follow up appointment.  I want to be back on NuvaRing eventually- I like not having to think about it too much.

  • I'm getting the Nexplanon implant in my arm on the 17th. It's progesterone only, which my body tolerates well from my experiexperience on the mini-pill, is safe for breastfeeding, isn't a foreign object lodged in the vagina, and lasts for 3 years. Can't really beat that deal in my book!
  • I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet. My OB said we'd discuss it at my first PP checkup. She said she'd ask me "if you got pregnant right now, would you want to kill your self?" (Spoiler alert- yes, yes I would). My answer will help her determine which method to go with. I'm thinking some version of the IUD but not sure if I want Mirena or the copper IUD. I really don't want my sex drive to suffer after almost a year of getting basically none. I've heard that can be a side effect of mirena? -Anyone have insight on that?

  • We plan on using condoms, and probably natural family planning through fertility awareness (temping, monitoring cervical mucous) as well. I am wary of using just the natural family planning because I'm scared the breastfeeding may alter the readings.  We'll probably start trying again in about 18 months for #2 (although right now in the newborn phase it's hard to think about), and as I'm a little older I don't want to do anything hormonal that may make it more difficult to conceive.  We're thinking after #2 DH will get a vasectomy, so I may never have to be on hormonal birth control again!

  • We talked about it with our midwife yesterday. Even though I'm BF I already had my first period, so she said we definitely need to do something. I've always been on the pill, but it made me rage all the time and I didn't want to deal with that. She suggested the Mirena, but said it may do the same thing. I asked about the arm implant as well and she said every one that she put in the people came back to get it out because they didn't like it (they developed severe acne). I think I'm leaning more toward the Mirena.
  • Going back on nexaplon. absolutely loved  it before we were TTC.
  • My doctor recommended progesterone only IUD. The "hormonal" birth control I was taking before was estrogen and progesterone, so maybe progrsterone only won't effect me so much. @noraaurora I've also heard it can lessen periods which have sometimes been painful for me. (Most months normal, then once in a while hospital level
    pain).
@MRSCORKER lol. That's how I feel. Def do not want to get pregnant. My OB started discussing contraception at 35 weeks with me.

  • I'd prefer NFP and condoms to taking a pill, but I'm not sure how that would work if I don't get regular periods while breastfeeding.  My OB suggested the mini pill (progesterone only) so I'll probably try that.  Hopefully there are fewer side effects than previous BCP I've taken, I was grateful to have some time off of it when we were TTC.

I'm also fearful about natural planning for this reason. Also temping won't be accurate if I'm waking in the middle of the night to feed. Should get BBT after at least five hours of sleep and not moving in bed, first thing, same time every morning. Haha. Not happening for me!

I don't know why I'd rather have a foreign object lodged in my vagina than in my arm. It makes no logical sense!

The plan is for DH to get the snips sooner than later, but he hasn't even found a new primary dr yet, so I'm guessing it'll be a while :) If it's just a matter of him not getting around to it we'll just do the condom thing. If he changes his mind or is having reservations about it I'll talk to my dr about an IUD. We are done growing our family, but I want him to be 100% comfortable with a decision that permanent. He has until my 6 week follow up to give me an indication one way or the other lol

@chriscasey33 I hadn't even thought of this, good point!  Also, I'm guessing breastfeeding may also alter cervical mucous due to the estrogen.  I guess it will be condoms every time then for us!

  • Allow me to be your living proof that NFP alone isn't terribly reliable, even/especially when breastfeeding.
  • @chriscasey33 Really? IUDs give me the willies!
I told you it was illogical! But if I really stop and think about it, your reasoning makes much more sense

  • DH and I used condoms in our years before having this little one and it worked well for us, although we also had the "if it happens, it's okay" mentality. We started out with pregnancy planning for 2 and if a third comes along as a surprise, it would be okay. Then first trimester hit and I felt so awful throughout that I swore it would only be one. Now that I have little one and not pregnant anymore, I feel like I cannot wait to do it again and feel really sad to think if we didn't.

...so we will probably continue to use condoms for the moment. Gotta tell you that I am a bit nervous about the first time though. I liked someone's suggestion of having booze on board for the first time.

WORF: I did not come here to admire the scenery.
DAX: If you say so. I guess we should just go home.
WORF: Well maybe. I would not be so hasty.
DAX: I take it the scenery has improved?
WORF: A few months ago, when I was commanding the Defiant on a scouting mission in the Gamma Quadrant, we encountered a protostar cluster, a swirling mass of colour set against a background of glowing clouds and burning sky. It was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen, until now.
DAX: I've got to take you on vacation more often.

  • I ended up getting my tubes tied with my c section- so no more birth control for me. We were originally planning to find out more info on having H snipped but with such a scary pregnancy with DS2 and the likelihood of having the same issues if I got pregnant again- it just wasn't worth the risk. I am okay with it though- we are happy with our family of 4!
  • We use natural family planning. Chart mucus and nothing else to think about (The method we use doesn't use temps but I have reliable cycles so I've never been worried). So far it's worked to avoid for 4 years and gave us 2 kids. Plus it's nice to not have to deal with hormones or condoms.

  • I'll be using NFP, charting temp and mucus. I've never been on birth control before, so I have really reliable cycles and charting works well for me.

Ive also thought about what to do since I'll be getting up in the night to feed LO, so the temp might not work out. But luckily I'm pretty textbook when it comes to mucus, so I will be using that as a guide until Baby sleeps through the night. I'm also doing formula only, so I won't have breastfeeding altering my readings.

However, I can't even imagine having sex with DH while Baby is still getting up in the night and I'm going back to work. I imagine I'll be falling straight to sleep the minute my head hits the pillow. So aside from the occasional wild night when my chart shows absolutely no sign of fertility, I'm thinking it'll be a few months before we have sex on the regular. And by then my cycles should be back to normal. (I hope.)

But since NFP is our method, that also means I'm wary of having sex before I get my period back, since a chart won't be reliable until then. I'm 5 week's PP and no period yet. Since I'm not breastfeeding I have no idea when it'll come back....I can't decide if I want it to come sooner (so I can get my charts started and feel like my normal self again) or if I want it to come later (I mean...who likes their periods really?)

  • DH is supposed to be getting a vasectomy but hasn't even made an appointment yet. He's also trying to talk about number 5, LOLOLOL. I literally laughed in his face. I am planning on getting either Nexplanon or Mirena. I haven't been on birth control in probably 7 years and I'm REALLY worried about anything I get making me gain weight.

  • I would have an "I <3 IUD's" bumper sticker if they made one

  • Still waiting on baby to get here, but I will be getting another mirena IUD after baby comes. I had one before we started ttc, and loved it! I def had some issues with taking anything with estrogen in the past, but since mirena is progesterone only it did not cause any issues. Also, my period basically disappeared while I had my mirena, which was a huge bonus.
  • I knew after this LO that we would be done. 3 kids is good enough for both of us. DH was going to get a vasectomy but since I ended up having a c-section, I asked them to go ahead and perform the tubal ligation. It's nice to not have to worry about birth control. After my last one, I went with mirena but after a year I started having constant yellow greenish discharge. The first year on it was great but the discharge made me feel gross and I never wanted to have sex.

  • I will probably go back on the pill at my 6 week appointment. It worked well for us before TTC, and my crystal ball says BF/pumping is about to be over for us, so we won't have to worry about drying me up. Still hoping that H will agree to a vasectomy down the road, but we are not done with kids yet.
