November 2016 Moms

Stretch and sweep anyone?

Has anyone had one? How bad was it? My doctor offered to give me one on Thursday as I've been 3 weeks with prodomal labor.

It seems a bit premature though?

FWIW, I'll be 37 1/2 weeks. I'm 1cm, very thin and soft.

  • Last time I had my membranes striped at 37 and 38 weeks and didn't deliver until 39, so it'll help, but if your body isn't ready, it shouldn't throw you into labor.

  • My doctor offers it after 38 weeks. I'd planned to do it with my last, but went into labour before my appt. As PP said, though, if your body isn't ready it won't throw you into labour. It only works ignore your body's ready.
  • I personally wouldn't even begin to contemplate until at/after EDD.

  • Yeah,  I would also wait until my due date I think.

  • My Dr offered today at 38 weeks.  I heard it's really painful and she told me studies show it doesn't do much for second+ moms. But she said she could do it of I wanted her to. I declined. I see no reason. I'm in enough pain as it is. I think the baby will born this week. I've been up all night with painful braxtons or real contractions. This is my 3rd and i still have a hard time distinguishing the difference early on.

  • I had 2 with my first - right after 39 weeks and again after 40 weeks. Didn't do anything for me because i still was induced at 41 weeks. Not as painful as I'd expected.

I asked what risks were and my doctor said it's rare (he'd had it happen once), but could prematurely rupture water.
  • I had it done with my second because Dr. figured earlier, potentially smaller (she wasn't) baby would give me a better chance of a VBAC (did have one).  I had it done at 38 and 5 and 39 and she was born at 39 and 1.   It didn't really hurt but I could feel it.   The first one didn't cause much other than cramping and the second one put me into contractions that turned into labour during the night.

If offered, I'll take it again but I won't see the Dr. that does it until after 39 weeks.  I like the fact that it doesn't put you into labour unless you're ready to go into labour.

  • I've never even heard the term "stretch and sweep". :|
Time to do even more reading!
  • I had it done in my last pregnancy because my daughter was overdue. I didn't find it to be particularly painful but it also didn't work for me.
