Milk

DD has been on whole milk since 11 months - and drinking it exclusively since 12 months.  She's had pimples and a rash, is having GI issues and lately throws up.  We tried coconut almond milk and she loved it but I'm concerned about the sugar level.  I want her to get the proper nutrition but think we have to stop the cows milk and I'm not interested in going soy.  Any dairy allergy moms out there?

Re: Milk

  • I am still mixing LO'a formula in with Milk because he throws up if I give straight milk or too much milk.

  • Did you try lactaid? She might be lactose intolerant
  • I started mine on goat's milk. I read that vegan milk substitutes don't have a high enough fat count to be a good substitute. We've since started mixing in whole cow milk and that's gone f fine

@chelseajeanene I've read that babies should not consume lactaid.

My oldest was on soy milk after formula but she prematurely developed armpit hair and body odor so we took her off dairy completely.   She had a milk protein allergy, not lactose intolerance, so  I wonder if DD3 has the same. Oh, the fun...

Looks like I'll be calling my pedi tomorrow.

  • How much whole milk a day(in ounces) should my LO be getting a day?! I feel like he's getting too much.
  • I'm doing almond milk,  works great for us!
  • We use almond and coconut milk. The pediatrician and allergist said it was fine and it works great for us. We use this brand. We also use goats milk sometimes but it's hard to get here so we have to wait until we go to the city.

  • See, we only do almond milk in this house but I didn't press it with the dr when he suggested whole milk. I buy organic whole milk for him but would prefer if he had almond milk.
  • I don't know @LoveLee85 My DD drinks 2 6oz bottles a day.  Yes we buy that brand till @momofsweetps

Thanks. I might call his dr and really am about the milk issue. We just switched to organic cows milk in the past few weeks.

The doctor told me he should be getting between 16-24 ounces a day. He usually gets 4 6 ounce bottles. I have tried Almond milk because he had milk protein issues and was on nutramigen which I still mix his bottles with. However I noticed how few calories almond milk has compared to whole milk and wonder if the high calories are part of the reason for giving whole milk.

  • My doctor said between 16-20 ounces at her 1 year appt!
  • I had to switch my daughter to goats milk and it has cleared up all of her stomach issues that the cows milk caused.
  • We are still nursing, but my daughter has a dairy allergy so we won't be using cow's milk. I asked her allergist what substitute he recommends when we eventually wean and he told me as long as she eats meat a substitute isn't necessary. I know it's customary to give milk but for us, we are going with his recommendation when the time comes.
  • Almond milk here. Cow and goat's my broke my daughter out into a horrible diaper rash. As soon as we stopped it, it was gone the next day! clearly,  her system is not agreeing with it for whatever reason.

Im not concerned with the nutrients bc s get them from food. She's a great eater! Plus, I don't want a bulk of her calories to be from just milk. A variety is good!
  • I was told whole milk because they need the fat, but I don't know why you couldn't supplement the almond milk with a non-dairy fat instead. We are doing Organic Cow's milk, but she has handled the transitions from Nutramegin to Gentle-ease to regular formula and then to cow's milk fine. I wasn't sure that was going to be the case when she was a newborn and I had to cut all dairy out of my diet. Our family also eats dairy though: I was a very sad mommy when I couldn't eat cheese for a while.
