NBR: Halloween / Scary Movie Suggestions?

Hey all! With Halloween fast approaching, what scary movies do you particularly like? Any recommendations?

I always watch Nightmare Before Christmas, of course, and I'm mid HP marathon now. As for scary movies, I actually think Cabin in the Woods is fantastic. (love me some Joss Whedon)

  • I like movies where things jump out at you like Paranormal Activity. Classics like Saw and Hostel are good if you like more gore. Overall I'm more of a psychological thriller type....like shutter island for example.

Have you ever seen Identity? Its older, maybe 15 years old, and soooo good. I can't even tell you about it for fear of spoiling it.

  • Ooh I will have to check that out @longliveregina !
  • The Babadook was really good and suspenseful, Trick R Treat is a good one also, weaves together a couple different stories.

  • I'm not really into scary movies, but I will watch the Silence of the Lambs series with my husband. Also, The Skeleton Key is great.

For Halloween, it's always Hocus Pocus.

@longliveregina - my birthday is May 10th, so that movie weirded me out completely. I was all "I'm gonna die!!!"

  • I LOVE horror movies. Every night leading up to Halloween DH and I try to watch a horror/suspense movie although we're slacking big time this year.

I second @foersty;If you haven't seen The Babadook yet that's definitely a good one to watch.

The Witch was good too but IMO a little hyped.

It Follows is great for that campy 80's feel; seriously underrated in my book.

Although not horror, there's a documentary on Netflix called The Nightmare and it's all about sleep paralysis. That's a horror movie in my eyes lol It's seriously unnerving.

  • Some less scary favorites of mine, Haunted Mansion, Hocus Pocus and Nightmare before Christmas. Other favorites, Sleepy Hollow and my DH's favorite, The Shining.
  • I like psychological thrillers more than anything. Gory stuff is just a little too much for me, especially lately. But DH loves bad horror movies, which are 75% gore and 25% terrible dialogue.

I watched Crimson Peak a few weeks ago and it was really well done, lots of creepy imagery. I like the Paranormal Activity series. There's a movie on Netflix called Pontypool, which is great if you like the zombie/apocalypse genre.

Classics like Silence of the Lambs, The Exorcist, Halloween, & Nightmare on Elm Street are great, too.

  • I don't like scary/horror movies, so I am no help here. :( But I did give in to the peer pressure and watched "Stranger Things" on Netflix--so worth it! I completely get the hype. It's suspenseful yet has a ton of charm thanks to the perfect cast. If you haven't seen it yet, start it... on a Friday night so you can binge them all throughout the weekend ;)

  • I love Halloween but I'm a major wimp! I've gotta watch Hocus Pocus too and I also love the Harry Potter movies this time if year!

I like to watch Corpse Bride and my personal favorite Young Frankenstein!!! I just bought Casper which I'm excited to watch again. I was a little obsessed in like, middle school, but I probably haven't seen it since.

Lol! Without going into too many details, there's a movie where a character looks into the camera, whispers my first name, and proceeds to kill everyone in the building without warning. I was watching it at like 3am in college when I was distracted by grading papers, and for a fraction of a second I actually thought something paranormal had just happened, it definitely weirded me out!

  • I used to LOVE scary movies! Until I had DD. SO hates them because he says he knows they're fake... But all these suggestions are getting me back into watching something scary! Old movie but I've always loved the Blair witch project.. Poltergeist is a classic too! Whatever you do, don't watch The Cell, it was really really not great.
  • The conjuring 2 was sooo good. We saw it last year and I screamed several times in the theater.
