UTI during pregnancy

Hi - has anyone had a UTI while pregnant? I just got a call that I have one, so I'm being put on antibiotics.  I am 14 weeks pregnant, and the doc said the UTI cannot harm the baby, but I was reading lots of articles and other forums where women were freaking out over these. Just curious about anyone who has had one.

Re: UTI during pregnancy

  • I believe since you have caught the UTI early and are taking antibiotics, there should be no harm to baby. HOWEVER, with that being said, at 34 weeks with DS, I had a UTI that was not caught and it spread to a kidney infection. It caused my body to go into shock and begin labor. So just as a precautionary tale, take care of yourself! :)

  • I had a UTI with DD and I actually have a very low grade one now (no antibiotics needed, just taking garlic, cranberry, etc). But as PP said, it can become serious so make sure to do whatever they tell you.  I would think they will want to re-test you once you complete the antibiotics to ensure that it is cleared up.

  • UTIs are not harmful for babies, but more for you (and ultimately for the baby) if you don't treat them as it can turn into a kidney infection which can be bad news. UTIs are actually not uncommon in pregnancy and are very easily treated with antibiotics with no problems at all. Hope you feel better soon!

  • I had one during both of my last two pregnancies. The first one I didn't realize, either, but the second one I caught. Drink LOTS of water!

  • @cafedisco they are going to re-test my urine the next time I see the doc. I'm on a one week antibiotic and drinking lots of cranberry juice.

  • Any infection can be harmful for mom and baby, which is why they are treating you and also why you're encouraged to stay current on things like dental health during pregnancy. The antibiotics are a good thing, but they might kill off good bacteria too. A probiotic might be a good idea. I had some urinary issues last time, so this pregnancy I've been taking a cranberry pill every morning and have been feeling great so far.
