As we're all transitioning into the second trimester I thought it might be fun to start talking about nurseries.
*stolen from F'17* Are you doing a theme, a color scheme, or something else? Will baby have their own room or share with family members? Do you plan on changing baby’s space much as they grow or are you designing for the long haul? Is this fun for you or a dreaded chore?
I had a nursery all done and ready for ds before I was 30wks pregnant. He has never slept in that room. And only napped in his crib once. He's 3 and still sleeps in our bed or in his bed in our room. So I will not be doing another nursery. I'm excited that I don't have to do much except buy some diapers, wipes, creams, gas drops....
I am doing woodland theme. Maybe some grays, light pink or blue, and gold. We live in a one bedroom house, but its quite spacious, so we are going to make it work for now. We have a HUGE walk in closet. HUGE. We are going to convert that into a small nursery. We are going to be on the search for property around feb/march so hopefully we will build and be out of this house by the time the baby is 12-18months .
We will be moving into a (hopefully) bigger place when LO is between 2-3 months old, so no nursery right now. LO will sleep with us until we move. I've been trying to come up with some themes though for when we do have a nursery, and my favorite one thus far is maps. It's super nerdy, but I used to have a big world map up in my room as a kid and I would memorize all the countries and their capitals, so I'm kinda taking it from there. I'm pretty sure DH thinks I am nuts, but it's okay. I also like that it's gender neutral so when we have another baby, this one can pick out his/her own stuff and we can use this for a nursery again. I think the colors are going to be mostly beige, ivory and white with different accents (mostly blue and green map-y type colors).
We are moving DS into our current guest room, our current guest room in our office and then re-doing the nursery into a girly theme/design. So 3 rooms - I want to cry!
The nursery we are going to do a loose animal theme with a very light khaki on the upper walls, cream beadboard on the bottom and then touches of pink throughout the room. We just got a very large giraffe from PB Kids (ridiculous but I'm in love) and then are getting these awesome prints of animal headshots that I'm in love with by The Animal Print Shop. With DS the walls were dark blue so bless my husband - he's going to have to paint that a ton with Kilz to get rid of the dark color.
Bc I'm PGAL I haven't let myself think about anything fun. Not really. But now that I'm in second trimester I've started thinking a little. We probably won't start actually working on it for some time, but I'd like soft grays on the walls with white curtains and then I'd like a storybook/fairy tale theme. Further details will depend on boy or girl but since we plan to stay in this house for at least a couple of kids, any gender details will be in the decor and whatnot that can be swapped out if we have the opposite sex later. The whole room needs a rehaul. It needs to be painted and a new closet door and perhaps even a new window.
We are doing a nursery. We did one for DS and he has slept in every night since the day he came home and I think we are all saner for it.
For this little one I am thinking Woodland light... more along the lines of owls and little foxes. The colours are going to be aqua and grey. I'll accent with Coral for a girl or Navy for a boy.
We use the same nursery for all our babes. We were team green for our first two pregnancies so it's GN. I still love it. DH painted the moon and stars. Here is a photo of one corner. The window has white plantation shutters now.
With DS we did not have a nursery due to lack of space. He slept in a crib in our room which was a nightmare. I am so excited to have a nursery for this LO. We bought our current house just short of 2 years ago with the idea of having a nursery one day. So we've had an "empty" bedroom for almost two years. Ill be decorating the room in elephants, mostly grays, tans, and whites with pops of color depending on boy or girl. I have a ton of stuffed animal elephants already and have bought a few blankets and pillows. I also bought a wax melting smelly thing that is elephant! DH is going to have to paint the walls from the current light yellow to a light gray. I don't plan on getting the nursery started until after Xmas, but want it ready by March in case baby arrives early.
We have just started thinking about a nursery. Our current decision is to do a loose book theme. I found some really neat Disney watercolor prints on Etsy and we will likely do a wall decal with a sign pointing to different story locations (Hogwarts, 100 Acre Woods, etc.) Haven't decided on a paint color yet, something light. We (Okay, me) wanted to find a way to incorporate some of the Harry Potter decor I already had in a tasteful/small way. Plus, the room will be gender neutral (at least the walls/furniture)
DD seriously never slept in her crib. She's in a big girl bed now so we've moved the crib to the guest room. DD got the old guest bed which was a full, so we now have a queen and the crib in the nursery/guest room. The theme will probably be something gender neutral/adult friendly, like a nice elephant theme. We honestly haven't thought about it that much since DH has been traveling every week, but we still have a ton of time to make it cute and functional.
I love elephants and i think its going to look great!
With our first, we did a Super hero theme. It looked more like a toddlers room, but at least he'd be able to grow with it for a while. For our second, since we're having another boy, i'm thinking Dinosaur, space, or Robot.
We started clearing out the nursery over the weekend as it's recently become a catch all. Now that all the non-baby stuff is out I'm going to start decorating. The walls are green and the theme will be ocean/nautical. I love the whale bedding at Target and decided to use that as my inspiration for the room, it has gray, white, green and shades of blue. We already have a crib, dresser and rocker- all of which we'll be repainting white or gray. I figure now is the time to get it done as I know I'll run out of steam later. Since we had to empty the stuffed full closet, I have another project of going through everything and finding new homes for everything either in our guest room or it goes in the donate pile.
@shaunessa Thanks! I am obsessed with elephants. I had to force DH to make me leave the store this weekend because I kept seeing elephant stuff that I wanted to buy. @LittleChick2 our nursery has also become a catch all. There are piles and piles of clothes that don't fit the boys anymore. I'm hoping that we have a girl and I can just give them all away
For DS we just painted the room a neutral tan and then I accented with a few things in navy, red, tan (mainly a quilt and the curtains) that had older style looking planes, cars, etc. For this one we will probably do something similar - paint neutral and accent with appropriate colors minimally. I told DH that really all I really care about is getting the room painted before babe arrives. We moved in this summer and that room currently is a hideous sight of BRIGHT yellow and beachy theme... bleh. DS slept in our room the first probably two months and that's the plan with this one as well. As long as it's painted I can set the crib up and "decorate" later on.
@sdswenson Will you be taking the door off your closet? I'd worry about fire safety with the nursery in a closet--firefighters may not think to look in there in an emergency.

We will have a nursery, but our house layout has the master bedroom down the hall and up a few stairs from the other bedrooms, so we will have the baby sleep in our room in the beginning and then move them to the nursery later...probably after the first few months. I am still trying to decide if we will just have a crib in our room and then move it to the nursery, or if we should set up the nursery with the crib from the start and get a bassinet/co-sleeper for our bedroom. Any STM's have advice on this? Our master bedroom is really large, so space is not a concern, just not sure what makes the most sense.
As for decor, I was thinking either a woodland or a jungle/safari type theme, but not sure yet. I definitely want something that will grow with the child, since we want to have 2 kids and we have 2 identical bedrooms picked out for this purpose, so they will keep the same room (currently the other one is a guest room). And this is most definitely a fun project, not a chore for me
@kitkat8387 I would suggest a bassinet/pack and play type thing for your room if you will only have baby there for the first couple months. Like I said before, I had the crib in my room, but sometimes it was just easier to have DS sleep right next to the bed in a rock n play type chair.
I'm going to be co sleeping with the babies for quite a while. We're going to sidecar a crib up to our king size for more room. No nursery for them as the only other bedroom in our housearch belongs to our 20 month old son. It's an ocean theme though with grey blue walls and turquoise stripes on one of them. We'll decorate all the kids rooms in a couple of years when we move into a larger home
We are starting on the baby room. My DH is excited to get the work done on the room. We picked out a few colors for the walls this weekend trying to decide between a few different green colors. Doing a woodland theme too. I love the foxes that are everywhere these days. Need to get the room carpeted once the walls are painted. So much to do.
This is fun!! DS1 was an underwater theme, I think this DS2 will be zoo animal themed. No painting or special hardware, just the bedding set with some pictures, rug, etc. What I can't decide on is the crib/dresser. Our first was a nightmare to put together and we're looking to avoid that. We want a 3-in-1 that's well made so it lasts. Suggestions??
Maybe I should until Friday to post because it's totally flame worthy. We are pretty much done with decorating the nursery. We have known since we bought this house how we would decorate it so we got odds and ends as we found them on sale. Crib is up, have all the furniture, just need to decide on a name so we can put that up.
If a girl, we'll update the guest bedroom to a light blue and hot pink themed room. If a boy, eventually I'd like him to share a room with the older brother and it'll be space themed. The current nursery is rubber ducky themed. I don't like decorating and am dreading doing much... but that nesting instinct may hopefully kick in or I'll get some help.
@kitkat8387 honestly, every baby is sooooo different! With DD, we didn't have room at all in our room for the crib and I wish we had. We had her in a tiny bassinet (which she hated), so then in a rando bouncy chair thing. But then getting her to sleep in her crib later was hard. This go-round, we're going to sidecar the crib so that when we are ready to move baby out of our room, it's one less transition. I would recommend that if it's possible!
DD's room is essentially still decorated like it was when she was born, even though we moved. We were Team Green but I chose to decorate how I wanted it so I suppose it's a bit more feminine. I put Charley Harper prints on the walls and my mom made the curtains.
I am not doing a room this time because it's TBD if the kids will share a room or not. We have a 3rd (empty) bedroombut I would rather convert it into an art room or something when they are older if they could get along well enough to share.
BUT if I was doing a nursery, I'd be doing it with a vintage ferris wheel theme.
Here's our first nursery for DD, sorry if it's huge!
We will probably be doing a travel themed nursery. DH has a bunch of old maps that he's collected so we will frame a few and we have some wooden trains as a start. We are having a boy but I'm trying to keep it pretty gender neutral so that it can be used again if we have another.
MMC @ 10w March 2016 Cautiously expecting April 5, 2017
We did a nursery for DD and she slept in her crib from the 2nd night she was home. First night was in a bassinet right outside out bedroom. For her we did pink, black and white damask pattern.
If we have a boy we are going to do a Monster's Inc room. If its a girl we are not sure, but maybe a Minnie Mouse or Disney theme.
We are huge Disney fans in our house. DD currently has a frozen theme bedroom: frozen bed, mini frozen arm chair, toy box, you name it... its frozen!
@wagnerw I love the idea of subtly adding in references to favorite books like that. That's kind of what I'm thinking of with the storybook theme I want. I've found some prints you can buy on Etsy that are overlaid on book pages. I'm thinking something subtly Harry Potter, the lamppost from Narnia, etc. Maybe some quotes on fairy tales and the power of literature.
This kid will be in our room for the first 6 months, based on my experience with the others (starting in a rnp, then moving to a pnp). If #3 is a girl, DD will be moving into our bedroom, we'll be moving into my office, and DD's room will become the office. If it's a boy, DS's moving to our room, DD is moving to his room, we're moving to the office, and the office is moving to DD's room. We currently have the only bedroom big enough and configured the right way for 2 people. Based on this alone I'm hoping for a girl
DD will have a gray, lime green, and purple themed room. Unclear what we'll do if DS moves. I'm not huge on interior decorating, so we'll do the rooms once and the kids will grow into them.
@kitkat8387, check the dimensions of the crib. Make sure if you build it in your room, it will fit out the door and down the stairs to the next room. If you have the space, go for the crib. If not, start with a bassinet, rock n play, pack n play, etc
We live in a cape with only two bedrooms on the second floor, and since our lo is only going to be 18 months I am not having him on another floor yet. That said, lo will be in our room in an Arms Reach Co-Sleeper for the first 2-4ish months and then will share with our son. The nursery is currently a nice teal blue with gray accents so it is very gender neutral. We hope to move by the time April LO is 2 so that we will be able to give each of them their own room!
We are in the process of moving DS into a new room (the room is done but still need to anchor some furniture) but I really don't know what we are going to do with the nursery. I am hoping to get some inspiration from this thread!
We are meeting with contractors to see if we can afford to put an addition on our house (DH refuses to move to a larger home) and i am stressed about it, so I just can't even be creative right now. I do know that I would like to update the nursery at least a little from what it was with DS.
@KirstinH88@LittleChick2 I LOVE Hobby Lobby and haven't ventured into it yet to look at nursery stuff (great idea!) but be warned - you may spend hours in there!! Every time I go in I am absolutely amazed at how much stuff they have. My dad always jokes about how it's his least favorite store in the world
Reviving this thread. How are you ladies doing on the nursery front?
We finished putting paint on the walls and ceiling today! Next project for DH is to paint DS's old nursery furniture. I can't wait to get it all set up. My mom also took me shopping and bought us a convertible car seat and swing.
@KirstinH88 the room looks cute! I like the paint color! We are going with a similar shade of blue. We have the crib and just ordered a glider off kohls and plan to use all of our kohls cash/yes to you points to go towards a nice discounted dresser next week! We will probably paint/put things together in the coming month or so.
@wagnerw the color is having to grow on me. It's supposed to be grey. Sometimes I feel like it gives off a purple undertone and here, in the pictures it looks blue-ish. But I do like the contrast against the white baseboards and closet.
