Re: GD Club Check-In 10.11
How are your numbers this week? My fasting numbers have been right at the 95 level- some are 91-95 but today's was HIGH at 102 and I don't know what it going on. I just tested after breakfast and it's still high at 127, but otherwise, they have all been fine.
Any concerns? I'm concerned about my fasting numbers. I'm afraid it's beginning to show that I'm becoming more insulin resistant which may lead to injectable insulin before this pregnancy is over. I haven't exercised much so I'll add that in this week to see if it helps lower my numbers but overall, I'm starting to get concerned. My only saving grace right now is that yesterday and today have been EXTREMELY emotional days for me which I know can adversely affect my sugar readings. So there's that.... Any advice? Any thoughts on why fasting is so high other than becoming more insulin resistant or the crazy hormones? What does everyone eat for their bed time snack?
Let's look on the bright side- favorite thing about having GD? The thought that I won't have as much weight to lose after the baby is born than what I would have had to lose if I had not been diagnosed. I like the fact that I'm eating a more balanced diet and that it's not so carb loaded and unhealthy. Though, I won't lie, I do miss my whatever, whenever I want attitude. But I like knowing that there is a light at the end of the tunnel and that if I can continue to keep it up and under my limits I should be able to shed the weight pretty quickly.
If you could have one super power what would it be? There are so many I think I'd like to have but the most would be to fly or be somewhere at a moments notice. I don't think I'd like to read people's minds since I wear my heart on my sleeve and I think that could cause me problems and I don't think I'd like the power of invisibility since that could get a bit creepy- so getting somewhere at a moments notice or flying would be optimal since I'm always late everywhere I go anyway.
Rants/Raves/Questions My rants are my sugar fasting sugar spikes and I can't figure out what is causing them, if they aren't spikes they are right up there. Any advice on what I could eat for a bedtime snack to help regulate it? My daytime numbers are usually pretty good (except this mornings) so I'm not concerned about those yet.
I had a week of "higher" fasting numbers. My doc wants them below 90 and I had 5 numbers between 90-98 in a row. Then the next day it was fine. My doc wanted to put me on insulin at night to help the fasting number. I really had to push her and decline. Since then my numbers have been great. I think it had to do with being uncomfortable while sleeping, I found a new position which is almost sitting up. Also I had a lot more pain in the evenings that week. She did say that the evening snack should not factor into the fasting number because you should not have ate anything for about 7-9 hours. I also did some googling on my meter (OneTouch Verio) and I couldn't find much because its a newer one. But what I did find is that the meters made by that company tend to give you higher numbers than other meters. Bottom line is I listen to my body and trust my instincts. I also am going to talk with my OB about everything too. I am not a fan of my GD doctors.

TTC#2 April 2019How are your numbers this week? This is my first week testing (had my first appt with the GD nurse and nutritionist Monday morning), so I only have 24 hours worth of readings right now. So far nothing is elevated, but I didn't expect anything from my weekday diet to trigger anything. We'll see how Saturday and Sunday go though!
Any concerns? I'm still getting the hang of where to stick myself and getting enough blood out for a reading. I might be a little dehydrated, so I'm not sure if that affects my numbers or not. I'm also a little concerned that I haven't been eating enough carbs until now (I'm mostly gluten-free, dairy-free, and soy-free to manage my PCOS), so I might start testing for ketones in my urine. I have an appointment with my OB on Thursday so I'll ask about this then.
Let's look on the bright side- favorite thing about having GD? I have PCOS so I knew that I was predisposed to insulin resistance regardless of pregnancy, so it is nice to see how what I eat affects my blood sugars.
If you could have one super power what would it be? Being a wizard (a la Harry Potter) is cheating, right? If I had to pick one, it would probably be to travel through time. Though I'm sure that would get me into a lot of trouble...
Rants/Raves/Questions I really hate sticking myself, but I know its for my baby and my own benefit to be tracking everything.
@phoebecar for my bedtime snack I have a slice of sprouted grain bread (Ezekial brand) with 1 tablespoon of natural peanut butter. I eat it at around 10pm since I usually go to sleep at around 11
How are your numbers this week? Really good, almost on the lower side. I'm afraid I may not be getting enough carbs at certain meals but have been trying some new things out this week and probably erring on the side of caution. Changed up my breakfast and think I can add a 3rd carb choice in with this meal. I've had some post meal readings under 100 which I haven't had since I was diagnosed.
Any concerns? Just making sure that I'm getting enough carbs. I haven't weighed myself so don't know if I've lost any more but I imagine if I did that my doctors are going to have something to say.
Let's look on the bright side- favorite thing about having GD? How much better I feel since I'm eating a more balanced diet. I also have looked at some pictures from around my GTT and comparing them to now I look healthier.
If you could have one super power what would it be? Flying
Rants/Raves/Questions My DH and I are going to the Chicago area this weekend for IKEA and a Bears Game. It's a late anniversary trip/babymoon. We were looking at restaurants in the area we are staying (Schaumburg) and it stinking having to pick a place based on where there is something I can get without spiking my numbers.
@phoebecar My fasting numbers were high for about a week the week after I got my meter and since then have been doing pretty good. The dietician saw them and assumed I'd be put on insulin at night to help with it but everything came down and the doctor was happy. I was eating Greek Yogurt and trailmix as my evening snack and stopped that and switched to trailmix and applesauce. However, I think it has more to do with adding more activity in to my days and my body adjusting (this second one doesn't really help you). I try to walk after dinner before I check my numbers but I also try to get up and do a 5-10 minute walk around the building at work 2-3 times a day. That's what I think is helping the most. FX that adding some activity back in will help and you can avoid the insulin.
How are your numbers this week? I just started testing yesterday after lunch, so not horrible, but not fantastic. I just returned from my nurse appointment to discuss what I can eat and how many carbs, etc. My post-bfast 2 hour was 122, so just a bit high. Fasting was great at 86. She gave me a cheat sheet of how much candy and junk food I can eat to hit 15 carbs. LOL. If I eat like that, I will be so starving by the time it's meal time!!
Any concerns? Nervous about all of this prodding and numbers being off, really.
Let's look on the bright side- favorite thing about having GD? Probably that I am supposed to eat ALL THE SNACKS. I love food.
If you could have one super power what would it be? Whipping up a latte with my mind powers.
Rants/Raves/Questions I don't really have much to add. 11 more weeks to go, so I hope my poor fingers don't hate me by the end of it all. Weight is holding steady, actually down 2 lb from my last visit last week, but stable compared to my home scale.

How are your numbers this week? Pretty good - had a few slightly higher fasting numbers (I was initially told to keep them under 95 but I saw the OB this week and she told me that anything under 100 was fine, so she wasn't concerned. Although I rotate through visits with all of the MDs in the practice, so one of the others might have told me something different!)
Any concerns? Stress, mostly. Work is really getting to me with us being short-staffed, and I'm trying to keep it together for the sake of the Bean, but some days it's not so easy.
Let's look on the bright side - favorite thing about having GD? It's forcing me to take better care of myself than I otherwise would have (I have this really bad habit of neglecting myself while I'm making sure everyone else has what they need.)
If you could have one super power what would it be? Invisibility. Sometimes it would be nice just to disappear...
Rants/Raves/Questions Nothing I can think of at the moment. Getting used to the four times daily testing and I now have myself on (somewhat of) a schedule, so I guess I'm doing okay!

How are your numbers this week? First full week testing. My fasting numbers are a tiny bit high (they want me under 90) on work days when I get up earlier but they are great on weekends when I get a little more sleep. The dietician yesterday told me to limit my bedtime snack and get exercise after dinner but not so sure how much that will happen.
Any concerns?I haven't seen my dr since the diagnosis so I don't know how she feels that this is going to affect my due date, when any growth ultrasounds will happen etc. And I don't go back until the 28th. I'm just ready to have a conversation with someone who will tell me how she is going to handle all of this!
Let's look on the bright side- favorite thing about having GD? This is tough! I already wasn't eating bad because of morning sickness and nausea, I can't eat even more that I want... my dietician did say this will help me be in good habits for getting enough calories for nursing once this is over... so that.
If you could have one super power what would it be? Flying. The idea of being weightless and care free and just soaring over things has always appealed to me. Like swimming but you can breathe!
Rants/Raves/Questions It's only week 1 so I'm sure I will get used to this, but I feel like my whole life revolves around my food right now! Breakfast, wait 2 hours, check levels, snack, lunch, wait 2 hours, snack, cook dinner, dinner, wait 2 hours, prepare all snacks and meals for tomorrow, check levels, snack, sleep, repeat. AHHH. I know I will find a habit and it won't feel like this eventually but it is quite exhausting.
@1982Babies I will occasionally throw an extra snack in if I'm hungry or if I ate earlier than normal. Usually just one carb choice and I try to make sure protein is involved. I also will sometimes split my snack up if I have a little longer range of time so I would eat 1 carb choice and then 1-2 hours have my 2nd carb for my snack.
@BenNSarah It does get a easier, I hit my "woe is me" moment about a week and a half in to everything. I was tired of everything revolving around my food and checking my blood sugar. I have a nephew who has type 1 diabetes so I actually sat back and thought about him and the fact that unless a cure is found, this is his life. Constant checking and worrying about food. He has a continuous glucose monitor which helps for in between meal times and recently got a pump so he has a lot fewer pokes for insulin injection but it helped me find some perspective and remember that this is temporary. I also remind myself that the numbers that are given for gestational diabetes management tend to be stricter than that of type 2.
I will say, now that I've been at this for over 5 weeks I am in a pretty good routine and while it gets old, it doesn't seem as all encompassing as it did originally. Also, I have a timer on my phone that I set when I start eating. It takes some of the worry away from constantly watching the clock until I check my blood sugar.
Also, like you it took a while to see my OB after my diagnosis and to top it off I was seeing one that I don't normally see. He told me that so long as my numbers are controlled with diet nothing changes. I have an appointment with my actual OB next week and am anxious to have a little more of a conversation with her and anticipate at least one growth scan somewhere in the mix.
pretty good! A couple just slightly high ones for my fasting levels (95-96) but otherwise all good. Dinner tends to be my lowest although I eat the most and I'm starting to wonder if I should credit that to being home and actually relaxing while eating rather than rushing thru my lunch at work.
Any concerns?
Just getting anxious about babie's size and not knowing what to expect! wish my growth scan would be sooner rather than later, but hopefully that means dr isn't overly concerned.
Let's look on the bright side- favorite thing about having GD?
Definitely the fact that I'll have less weight to lose after baby comes! I also think it will be easier to stick with a healthier lifestyle and make better food choices
If you could have one super power what would it be?
Teleporting for sure! Imagine being able to just magically transport yourself/family/friends to the beach at any given moment. Or to Paris! Or anywhere else you could imagine!
Rants/Raves/Questions
I really really wish I could have just ONE cheat meal. I want a Pizza Hut stuffed crust pizza so bad I could cry. Just 2 pieces and I'd be satisfied!
Good morning ladies!
How are your numbers this week? My class was today so I start testing tomorrow.
Any concerns? No more chocolate milk is a huge concern for me
Let's look on the bright side- favorite thing about having GD? Will be healthier when baby comes
If you could have one super power what would it be? To be able to see the future
Rants/Raves/Questions nothing today!
@mforinger how many carb choices are in Pizza Hut's stuff crust pizza- maybe you could have 1 slice to assuage your craving then a big salad with some protein on it. Then go for a long walk. I'm not sure if that's even possible, but it might be worth a shot if your numbers are all typically below level. You may find you're able to indulge once in a while.
My fasting number today was well below normal but I was spilling ketones this morning so I'm guessing it's because I didn't have a ton of carbs at lunch or dinner yesterday. I didn't even get 3 carb choices for either meal, so I'm guessing it's a direct result of diet since my fasting number was well below 95 today. But after I posted my frustrations yesterday my numbers evened back out. So hopefully today it will be okay and tomorrow I won't spill any ketones. Those things scare me for some reason.
@babyk I think it's perfectly normal to struggle with the diagnosis. I certainly did and I'm sure every one of us did as well. I think the thing to remember until your appointment is to not over do it on carbs- try and eat as balanced of a diet as possible- think lots of veggies, protein and some carbs. One carb choice is 15mg- so that's roughly 1and 1/4 cup of strawberries, or 2/3 cup of pasta, etc. Many of us get anywhere from 3-5 carb choices per meal, but it's largely dependent on you and your body chemistry, age and weight, I think....
When I was diagnosed I had to wait 8 days before going to a class which covered the dos and don'ts but was expected to test during those 8 days so I was completely lost. I found a good starting point for me was to look up the Mayo Clinics article on GD and then I went to the American Diabetes Association and looked up GD, which also has some information.
Its not as overwhelming as it once was, I find that I can eat a lot if I want I just have to stretch into meals and snacks rather than just 3 meals a day, and that's okay. There are many things that I was eating before that I can still eat, I just have to eat it moderation.
@babyk I can completely understand that! However, your body uses those carbs as fuel and if you don't have enough my dietician said that your liver thinks- hey I'll help you out and then dumps a bunch of glucose in your system to help out which sometimes can lead to higher numbers.
Also if you don't eat enough carbs, then your body will start burning fat stores for fuel leading to weight loss and spilling ketones in your urine (according to dietician and GD educator) which can be harmful for baby.
It may have been that when you were eating carbs you weren't eating enough or you weren't pairing them with enough protein to stabilize your numbers. Admittedly I'm not a MD or Diabetic educator, it's just what they told me and what I've learned doing this for almost 6 weeks now. And what works for me, may not work for you and vice versa. It varies so much person to person!
I did this last night. Because my fasting number was way high yesterday and then my after breakfast number was way high (even though it was the same thing I had eaten for days) I cut down the amount of carbs at lunch and dinner and I think that's what caused me to spill ketones this morning. My dietician described it as a "perfect balance," too much and your numbers shoot high, too little and they can shoot high.
@BenNSarah- I'm so jealous of your pizza!!! @mforinger let us know if you indulge in yours and how your numbers are afterward. I may go rogue and try some!
I'm already hungry and just had my morning snack about 45 minutes ago, so I shouldn't want lunch for at least another hour or so....
@phoebecar I'm voting you the GD superstar knowledge award, you know your stuff girl!!
@mforinger- I'm not sure I'd go that far
, but thank you. I have this crazy obsession with note taking in classes- so when I had my GD class I swear I filled up so much notes on what they said. my DH thinks I'm crazy. And I've learned that if I write something down, I'm more likely to remember it.
now with all of that said, my GD educator or dietician could have something totally different to say than someone else's that's why I always caveat my stuff with I'm not a MD, nor in the medical profession, I'm just crazy
On the pizza. My husband and I are going to Chicago this weekend and he suggested we go to a wonderful pizza place. I started doing some digging and one of the places actually had their nutrition info. I tend to stick to the 3 carbs but I know I'm going to be active walking around all day I thought, I can do 4 for dinner and that would actually allow me to eat a whole Chicago deep dish style personal size pizza (at this one restaurant). It had sausage on it so it has some protein in it and that would be plenty for dinner. I said if that's where we were going to go I'd try it.
My internist told me that I need to worry when I don't know why my number is higher. Clearly I need to follow the meal plan and don't want a lot of spikes but if I try something new and then my numbers are high that I just need to adjust and not do that again but not stress about the high number. It's when it starts to trend that way without any changes that we need to start looking at making some changes. She said the first change we will try is just instead of 3 carbs at a meal we would try 2 at the meal, check my blood sugar an hour later and then eat the 3rd carb. Then have my snack 1-1.5 hours later. Basically I'd be eating every 1-1.5 hours to give my body time to process smaller amounts of carbs. But that was only if I was having issues with the current plan. Long story short, all of this gave me some confidence to try some new things so I didn't get too tired of the stuff I knew was working.
My GD educator told us that while we need to eat healthier and more balanced meals, a carb is a carb so it's ok to indulge occasionally. Different carbs definitely effect people differently but I liked the point of this to remember that unlike a diet where you may get a cheat day, there are no "cheat" days on this meal plan so to help with the emotional toll of everything, it's still good to indulge every once in awhile in moderation and appropriate carb counts
@babyk no worries! there is a lot to learn but once you get the hang of it, it's less overwhelming!
@carly79- let us know how it goes!
I had a frozen California Pizza Kitchen flat bread pizza last night which was surprisingly good, but very little protein
so I had to make that up, and then the stress and anxiety was HIGH last night due to some family issues so my blood sugar was a big high 123 versus the 120 it should be. So I'll try it again and heat up some deli turkey and throw it on the pizza or heat up some turkey pepperoni and throw it on there to accommodate for the lack of protein. but it felt so good to eat "pizza." Still not Chicago style (I'll take a slice if you are bringing any back for us to share!
But this morning my fasting was down to normal and I spilled no ketones, so hopefully it was just a change in diet needed or the accompanying stress going on in my crazy family that's causing spikes. My spikes cause me stress- it's a never ending cycle, but I like what @carly79 said about spikes and not knowing what's causing them. I know what's causing mine so maybe I just need to chill out!
How are your numbers this week?
Good, I think. Haven't had the GD class yet, so we'll find out tomorrow.
Any concerns?
That my OB isn't going to do a growth scan. Really want to know how much damage I've already done, in terms of baby's growth, but my OB practice isn't very accommodating and have a wonderful way of making me feel like any concern I have is foolish, but I'm still going to request one. Also, afraid that maybe it won't go away after birth and I'll be checking my blood forever.
Let's look on the bright side- favorite thing about having GD?
It made me start excercising again. Glad the weather has changed so I can get outside and walk.
If you could have one super power what would it be?
Definitely not invisibility, because I feel invisible most of the time anyways, and it is highly overrated
Would like to have the super power to generate money and automatically refill my bank account. Don't want to live a Kardashian lifestyle, but would like that we could move closer to home without the stress of finding new jobs for both DH and myself. And I could stay home with baby girl

@kattyC I'm sorry your doctor isn't good at calming concerns. In most women the effects of GD don't come on until the 3rd trimester which is why they wait until 28 weeks for the test normally. The 3rd trimester is when our bodies just can't keep up with the insulin needs of the growing baby (and I'm sure our hormones are ramping up fighting the insulin we are making too). I'm not a doctor so this is just based on what I've read and learned. The OB I saw at my last appointment said we may do a growth scan based on how I'm measuring when it gets closer to my EDD but for now as long as my numbers are controlled with diet there really isn't anything they change.
Also, check out the October 16 BMB. There area several ladies on their GD check in that have had their babies and have reported their numbers going back to normal so that may be some encouragement for you
I hope your class goes better tomorrow, I know that helped me feel better about a lot of things.
@1982Babies Bummer that you didn't feel good, what'd you have for breakfast? I test at 1 hour so I'm not even sure what the thresholds are for the 2 hours. Glad you listened to your body and got a little extra in there.

Now I thought I blew dinner, we got take out and I ordered hot wings. What I got was more of a mild sweeter sauce, I thought for sure it would spike form that.
I'm weirded out that my numbers decreased as the day went on and my fasting was the highest. I did try to move around during work as much as I could with my desk job. And me and the pup took our 20 minute walk after dinner.
i am way too Type A for this ugh
I have a question too. I have a Freestyle meter. Tonight I did my after dinner test and it was 130, which is higher than its ever been. So I put a new strip in, used more blood from the same poke, and it was 120. I tried some of the control solution and the reading was in the normal range. All of my numbers have been higher than normal today and I'm a little worried about this. Any experience with this?
