Choroid plexus cyst

Anyone else have a ultrasound showing one of these cysts? We found out today my baby has one. In and of itself, it is not a concern. The problem is it can be a soft marker for Trisomy 18. Without any other markers the chance of baby NOT having it is 99%. I feel pretty good about it and am not too concerned. Just wondering if anyone else has had this?

Re: Choroid plexus cyst

  • I don't personally have any experience with this, but a friend of mine was told the same thing at her Anatomy scan with her daughter. Baby turned out perfectly fine.

  • Yes, I think that's the next step to rule it out.
  • They found one on our little baby girl yesterday. The doctor was not concerned at all based on all the other results from the anatomy scan. Said that typically with a Trisomy 18 case, they would see many other issues with the baby. The offered an amnio to rule it out but we decided it wasn't worth the risk to her or her brother.

  • Yeah I was just coming to make a post about the same thing. The only difference is my Ultrasound had this cyst as well as an echogenic focus  in her heart.

So while the cyst is an indicator of  trisomy 18 the echogenic focus is an indicator of T21. I also turned down the Amino but they offered me additional blood work that takes 2 weeks to come back. Then I will have a follow up in a few weeks.

I feel like one of these on their own wouldn't be much to worry about but now my little girl has two indicators of two abnormalities.  I really dont feel like Im processing this very well right now.
  • @Finallyhismrs07 Glad your doctor was not concerned! I do not blame you for not wanting amnio!

@vino831 sorry you have to deal with that stress of seeing two markers. I'll be thinking of you and hoping the genetic testing turns out fine. I will be doing some genetic testing as well. Hang in there!

@vino831 I have not seen my doctor yet, my appointment is Friday. The ultrasound tech mentioned the QUAD screening and the NIPT.
  • How many weeks were you when they saw the cyst? My midwife told me we're going to push my scan as far back as we can because the earlier it's done (18 weeks) there's often cysts that will go away within the next few weeks. She said it happens often and that's why she prefers to do the scan closer to 20-21 weeks.. to avoid the scare. (I know it doesn't seem like much of a difference). Has anyone else been told this?
  • I had mine today at 19.3. The technician/dr said that it is likely at the next us that the indicators will be gone but that that is common and that doesn't mean there's no longer a chance. He said these are developmental indicators. Similar to the fact that you have to do the neuchal test between 10 -13 weeks.
  • @Burrberrymum I was 15 weeks 6 days, baby measureing 16 weeks 5 days. I hadn't heard that. But as PP said, they always go away and then going away doesn't lower the risk. Good to know though- because maybe a lot more people would have these scares if they are only detected during this time.

Actually my practice does the same thing: they almost never o the as before 20 weeks because the chance of a false red flag (for lack of a better word) is higher when you do it earlier.

ETA I don't think this is about cysts or anything though, more like heart and organ function.

  • @jazzyma14 hey! Hope you're doing well. Google has been killing me. I find articles that give me hope and research that sinks my heart. I'm probably gonna take some time off Tb until I get my results but I wanted to share this with you first it's honestly been the most applicable and encouraging stories I've read.

Hope it gives you some positively to read during your wait for fu. You're in my thoughts and prayers.

  • @vino831 Thank you for sharing that, I needed that this morning. I have been researching and have felt pretty good until last night. I had trouble sleeping last night being worried about it. The ultrasound tech also breifly mentioned a cleft palate. When I asked her what she was saying she basically said she couldn't rule one out because the way baby was positioned. Great! Thanks lady! Keep that to yourself. So ive been worried about that too! I have a follow up with my doctor tomorrow and am hoping for good news and hopefully further testing to rule things out.

I am so sorry you are also dealing with this worry. You are definitely in my thoughts and prayers. I don't blame you for taking a break, it's hard to think about anything else right now. Hang in there and try not to stress about it too much. Easier said than done, I know!

  • I had my follow up with my OB today. I wondered if he even read my charts before he came in. I had to bring up the cysts. He wasn't even going to mention it. He said it was too early to be concerned about it and he sees it all the time. I was kinda thrown off about him being really nonchalant but I guess that is a good thing. It was this big scary thing in my eyes but to him, it was obviously insignificant at this point. I guess I feel better? Idk. The ultrasound tech kinda scared us I suppose and it's hard to feel better when I am the one bringing it up and making him talk to me about it.
  • @jazzyma14 I'm sorry for th  added worries! Try to trust it'll resolve itself!

I haven't had this specific type of cyst... but cysts in general form a lot during pregnancy and are harmless.  I had placenta cysts with my DD, and this time around they found cysts on and around the cervix.  My doc last time and midwives this time say cysts are very common and they don't worry about th m. Usually schedule a follow up ultrasound just to check on growth
  • @kjd291 thank you for the reassurance :)
  • They also found one on my baby girls
brain at my anatomy scan. I just found out today. There were no other markers, but of course it's hard not to worry.

  • @lindsey61811 sorry you have to worry about this as well. The odds are in our favor. Have you had genetic testing done?
  • No we haven't. I spoke to a few other women who said they were offered a blood test after the finding. My midwife didn't offer or mention any further testing.

  • @lindsey61811 I'm sorry to hear that you are going through this as well. I would call the midwife group back about the blood work if that's what you are interested in. Or even contact the group that did your US?  Did you have your US at a MFM group? They are the ones that handled everything for me. Did the US - asked if I wanted the blood work- did the blood work - followed up with me about my results. They only kept my midwives in the loop.

Otherwise I'm sure as you've seen research wise or what other mamas have said the single marker has such a very low risk on its own. Doesn't make it easier not to worry ofc.

  • @betsy538 thank you!

I have an appointment Friday to check on my placenta previa and am hoping cysts will be gone. I know that doesn't mean there still isn't a risk but it will make me feel a little better. Also hoping my genetic testing results are in by then.
  • @betsy538  thank you! I got an all clear from the dr yesterday! @jazzyma14 I will be thinking about you on Friday thoughts and prayers that the cysts are gone and those results are back and with positive news!!!
  • Joining in, our AS today found two cp cysts plus extra fluid in one kidney. We had blood drawn for a harmony test and are getting another ultrasound in 6 weeks.

  • @sunshine507 sorry you have this added worry. I will be thinking of you and hoping for the best! A friend of mines baby had extra fluid in her kidney  and the baby is now a perfectly healthy 1 year old.
  • @jazzyma14 thanks :) just processing this, lots of ups and downs because we learned the gender (yey!) and saw so many cute views along with this additional info. Having the blood drawn for the genetic test afterwards was an ordeal because I was so dehydrated they had to stick me 4 times, it took me chugging water and using hand warmers then two phlebotomists working together for them to get the blood. Blah.
I hope your appointment goes well on Friday!!!

  • @vino831 I think a MFM doctor associated with my midwife practice just reviewed everything.

My US and everything are done at the same practice where I see my midwife.

  • Awesome jazzyma14! (Idk why TB isn't letting me properly tag on mobile today)

We got a call from my primary OB yesterday. They basically said they were calling to reassure us that our earlier screening tests we had done combined with these AS results meant they wanted us to not worry at all. I'll still have the cell-free dna test done, and I'll still get a follow-up US to track the cysts, but we already know my chance of a chromosomal issue is very very low and with the kidney issue even if it didn't resolve before birth they wouldn't do anything other than track it. So, still a little nervous but feeling much much better overall now.

  • That's great news @sunshine507
  • @jazzyma14 FANTASTIC news!!!!

@sunshine507 also great news! Super awesome that they went out of their way to make sure you weren't worrying

Soooo happy for everyone's healthy little babies!!
