Ask a STM 10/5

Do you have questions, concerns, random things to discuss with a STM+ Mom?

Go for it!

Re: Ask a STM 10/5

  • My baby moves around a LOT. But I haven't really felt her move since Monday night.  It's freaking me out.  Yesterday, I laid in bed poking her to try to get her to move.  But I couldn't feel anything.  I'm starting to freak out.

  • @AfKash did you try drinking ice water
  • @PerraSucia yes, I did.  Yesterday, I also agree ice cream. She usually moves around when I eat a meal, too. But after dinner, I didn't feel anything.
I just called my OB. The nurse is supposed to call me back.

  • @afkash have you been moving about a lot yesterday? I always notice him more when im on the couch or laying in bed. They're still pretty teeny in there but if you've been feeling consistently and now haven't maybe you could call in for peace of mind. I did read on the app that they are sleeping for 12-14 hours a day so that could also account for lack of movement.
  • @Afkash, that happened to me a few days ago, I was feeling my wee one quite a lot...and then like 3 days went by with hardly anything. It was making me really worried, but then yesterday out of the blue he got SUPER active. I think it's just a random thing that happens.

You went THREE days and you didn't freak out and call the doctor? You're a lot braver and patient than I am!

  • @Afkash haha, well I was freaking out internally. But I have high anxiety and am well aware of how huge of a worry wart I am, so I was telling myself I was just being paranoid. Plus, my doc appointment was yesterday, so I knew I'd have an answer soon.

  • I thought it was totally normal to go days without feeling baby this early? How far along are you all? I barely feel baby move right now. (I probably feel her more than I realize but I'm really not worried about it.) If it helps I'm 21 weeks on Friday.

FTM generally feel it later right? And I think you work so you're probably on the move or have your mind elsewhere. Like I said before, I always always notice it more when I'm laying down or watching tv and not nearly as much when driving, being active etc. I'm 22 weeks.
  • @homemake that's what I thought! When I feel her I'm usually laying down and relaxing, but that is not a common occurrence  The nesting is real right now.
  • @Gretchypoo I'm 22w3d and a FTM. I think it was the 18th week when I started feeling baby girl.  I know it's probably unusual for a FTM but I think I just have a very active one.  Even the nurses comment on how she jumps around so much.  Also, I know that my placenta is superior, not anterior. So, I'm sure that makes a difference, too.

  • @AfKash I see her move around in our ultrasounds and she jumps when we try to hear her on the doppler. I'll be worried if I get to 26 wks or so and don't feel her regularly.
  • Update: The nurse called me back, she still wanted to talk to me to find out what was going on.  She did mention that it happens a lot where the mom will call or come in and right away the baby will start moving. Hehe.
She also said that in my case, it might have been that the baby was facing my spine.  In that case, I wouldn't be able to feel her movements.

  • @Gretchypoo I'm also in my 22nd week and have been feeling baby since about week 19. And like @Afkash, I think he's just a very active baby. The tech at our A/S could hardly get the pics she needed because he wouldn't hold still long enough, and at my appointment yesterday it took the tech FOREVER to get the heart rate for the baby because every time she'd find the heartbeat, he'd move.

I totally understand.  I can imagine how frustrated I would be.

What is the latest some of you ladies started finally feeling your baby move?

I feel the same way. I already know I have an anterior placenta and while she does move away from the Doppler every time, she pretty much just napped most of our A/S! I'm just trying not to worry about it too much even though my mom asks every day if I've felt her yet  :/
  • I JUST started feeling her move, probably 3-4 days ago and I was 20 weeks yesterday.  Also a FTM and I do not have an anterior placenta.  My doctor told me she thought I would around 20-23 weeks.  But, even know, it's rare, maybe a handful of times a day.  She was super active the other day but yesterday I felt barely anything.  (Had a freakout but I have a home doppler, so did that to reassure myself.)  Even today, I have felt maybe 1-2.   I notice it the most while driving and if I wake up in the middle of the night!
  • @Gretchypoo I will also be 21 weeks on Friday!  I haven't felt the baby move at all yet - although my placenta is anterior and doc said it is totally normal not to feel anything yet given FTM with anterior placenta.
  • @AfKash I was told they're not going to start worrying about amount of movement until after 24 weeks because I'm high risk. I think for most pregnancies kick counts are thing around 28 weeks. Babies aren't that big in the grand scheme of things yet and if you're busy or walking around a lot during the day you may not even notice them moving. Our guy is pretty active, they have trouble with ultrasounds because he moves so much. Every once in awhile I'll go a day or two without really feeling him. It makes me nervous but they keep telling me it's fine.
  • @AfKash this is exactly why we purchased a doppler the first time around. It was such a relief to go to my doppler when I didn't feel LO moving around.

I think I have used it a hand full of times this time around just to put me at ease.  It's amazing what 30 seconds of hearing that little heart beat will do for you :)

  • Sorry to change the subject, but what did y'all do about the possibility of not being able to breastfeed? Did you have formula on hand, or send someone on an emergency run when you realized you may not be able to exclusively breastfeed? It is my plan to bf, but suddenly had anxiety about no milk coming in/not being able to, and felt like I needed to start researching formula so I know which one to buy in case we have to go there, and then started wondering if I should have some just in case.
  • Thank you, ladies for your input! @Gretchypoo ij hope this info helps you, too!

@lfrank12 does your mom not realize is stressing you out everytime she asks?

I'm not sure if any of you remember, a few weeks ago I had diarrhea with my MS. My doctor thought it was a stomach bug.  Since then, I've been having diarrhea a couple times of week. The last week and a half, I've had diarrhea everyday.  I am now 95% sure that this is due to my IBS. I've had IBS since I was 19. In the beginning, I used to take meds for it but then stopped....I adjusted my lifestyle and eating habits.  While it never totally went away, I was able to deal with the symptoms.  And now, I think due to the pregnancy, it's gotten worse.  I haven't really mentioned it to my doc.  I've just been drinking Gatorade and making sure I have enough fluids.  I'll tell my doctor at my next appointment next week.  But in the meantime, my mom asks me everyday if I still have diarrhea. Lol. It's sweet but a little annoying. "Yes, mom. I have the poops today, too. Would you like to know what color it is?"

I assume the hospital will have formula in a pinch, if your doing a home birth though, that's a different story.

  • We kept the formula samples from the hospital/mail. I used it with my oldest and was grateful at 2 am when I couldn't get a latch that it was on hand. We ended up not using it with my daughter and donated it later on.
  • @Gretchypoo I haven't felt mine at all either :/ I have a posterior placenta, so no anterior placenta issues. And I know my little girl is active because we've had at least 5 US's and she's moving like crazy the whole time. Plus she's always running away from the doppler too :p I'm also going to try not to freak out until about 25 weeks. I'm 20 weeks today though and I'm really hoping to feel her sooner
  • Hahah @Gretchypoo true that. I think I'm only a little nervous because I haven't felt anything at all. Nothing that feels like gas, no flutters, nothing. Like I said though, she's pretty active during scans, so I won't worry until I really have to

I didn't feel kicks until 22 weeks with DD if that makes you feel any better!

  • @Patience7150 For DD we had some of the samples on hand, but with DS we didn't have anything other than the number for our Lactation Consultant. In hindsight I wish I'd had the number for a Lactation Consultant on hand with DD, because it would have saved us so much frustration and so many tears (for me and DD). Also, our hospital had what they called Lactation Consultants and nurses that were supposed to be able to help you if you were having trouble, but they were pretty useless. I know that some hospitals have people that are truly helpful and know what they're doing, but it's not always the case (even if they tell you they do).

  • @Patience7150 if you sign up with Enfamil, they'll send you samples. If you don't end up needing them, donate them to a shelter or give to a mom friend.
Also, my pediatrician had sample cans of you asked.

  • @Patience7150 The hospital will have samples of formula for you, ours was similac. I would suggest going to see a lactation consultant, not just the one that does rounds at the hospital to help before giving up on it. It's weird that something so natural like breastfeeding is so difficult! There are also other moms that donate their milk of you want to stick to breast milk otherwise there are some good formulas out there too. Breastfeeding was a challenge for me with DS1. He had a tongue tie and no one would cut it because it wasn't "severe" enough.(which it is effecting his speech now) It made nursing painful and difficult; I wish I would have stood up for myself. He wasn't gaining the weight he needed to and I was told I should supplement with formula. The lactation consultant that I saw the second time gave me the best advice, and we made it to a year!
  • Thank you everyone!
  • @Patience7150 Im so glad you asked this question! I have no plan for if I can't breastfeed. Do you have a local LaLeche League?
  • I had no idea what Laleche league was. Just looked it up and yes! I do! Thanks for that tip @Gretchypoo, it's so nice to find resources like that now instead of in an emergency later!
  • Ooooh, I have a LLL close by as well.  Good to know there is another resource available.

  • LLL is a great resource. I've also been invited to 2 breastfeeding support groups (1 through my midwife practice, one public) that may be an option in your area too.

If you want to breastfeed, that support is vital to your success.

I will likely get some formula samples, though, because of the advice on here. Fed is best!
