Tooth extraction?

I am getting my back tooth pulled next Friday (I'll be just over 12 weeks) and am very nervous about harming the baby. I was originally going to get the tooth pulled at 8 weeks but the dentist told me the urgency was a 5-6---10 being the worst. He agreed to wait until second trimester and put me on a round of antibiotics. I had a miscarriage back in May so I am worried about doing anything that will cause bad stress on my body. Has anyone had a tooth extraction during pregnancy and baby is ok? I can tell that the infection is coming back because my gums are sore around the tooth.

Re: Tooth extraction?

  • I don't have any experience with this, but if he's just going to use a local numbing agent I wouldn't imagine there would be concern. What does your OB or Midwife think? Truthfully the infection is likely to cause more harm than the extraction so it's the lesser of two evils if nothing else. Good luck! I'm PGAL too so I understand the concerns about things like that.

  • I work in the dental industry and same as what your dentist said, as long as you wait until the 2nd tri you should be ok. The biggest thing is making sure they don't put you or the baby through any stress.  So definitely try to stay as calm as you can. We also skip the epinephrine. Some anesthetics have epi, but we have 1 that does not, so I would ask about that.
  • If it calms your nerves at all I've had 2 seperate x rays and extractions before I knew I was pregnant. With DD they said they were absolutely not concerned with possible risk. She's now a happy healthy 3 year old. Before I had a missed period this time around I did a repeat. I'm12 weeks, and not particularly worried or stressed.

I'm not an expert, but experts I've spoken too have given no indication that I should worry.

  • I didn't have an extraction, but I had a huge filling that was supposed to be a root canal. They managed to get it all before needing to go into the roots. I was numbed twice over two days and had an xray (with 3 aprons over me). I was very nervous about it, but the dentist used numbing without epinephrine because I was pregnant, and quite frankly letting an infected tooth fester was not physically possible and a worse idea for the health of both of us.
  • I had a back tooth pulled with my last baby.  I can't remember if I was in my 2nd or very early 3rd.  I HATE the dentist!  I also have TMJ had its not easy for me to hold my jaw open for long.  I took a muscle relaxer to help (approved by my midwife) everything was just fine :).   I need more dental work done this time to, with my love of the dentist I'm soooo looking forward to it
  • I had a 2 day long root canal when I was pregnant with DS (2nd trimester). The one root wouldn't numb, so needless to say it was excruciating but DS and I were ok and the painkillers helped later. My dentist was very calm and patient (which also helped) and we just tried to get through it together as best we could and would stop when it became too much. Like @lovelongdog06  said, it's worse to not get it taken care and risk infection. However, they will take care of you as they've probably dealt with pregnant women before needing the same thing. They will help get you through it, and it'll be ok!! :)

Plus it helps if they have a TV you can watch during it lol. HGTV was a nice distraction.
