Canadian moms: maternity/ parental leave

I just got back from my OB appointment and we were discussing maternity leave options. I was informed that as of September 1 (she believes that was the date) the laws have changed around how much time you can take and that you don't necessarily get paid for the entire time but you can take longer than your 52 weeks. I'm trying to find this info online but can't find it anywhere. DH said he heard about it too. Just curious on if anyone knows anything about this?

Re: Canadian moms: maternity/ parental leave

  • I haven't heard anything about it but I will definitely be trying to look into it!

  • We called service Canada and found out that it is still the same. What is changing is the two week wait time for funding will be reduced to one week as of January 1st. Doesn't help us but will be useful for future babies
  • I believe it was part of Trudeaus platform pre election to extend maternity/parental leave to 18 months.  What was never clear to me in the proposal was how your EI would be affected after the initial12 months.

But like youve mentioned after speaking with Service Canada is that it hasnt been passed yet so everything is still status quo.
  • From what I'm aware IF it does get passed you have a choice on how long for your leave. You can choose to take 18 months but will still receive the same amount of funding that you would if you chose to take 12 months just it will be spread out over 18 months instead of 12. So for example if you were to receive $30,000 which is the 55% of your wages for your 12 months (just giving a random even number for calculation purposes) you would be receiving $577 per week. If you chose to take 18 months you would receive $385 per week.

  • No changes as of yet ( I work for ESDC).  I plan on taking my 52 weeks and then another 6 weeks unpaid.  Feeling very lucky to be in Canada having babies!
