I'm curious what everyone is planning to do with the cord blood. Private, Public, or Discard? If you're swaying any which way, share why!

Re: Cord Blood- What are you doing?

  • There should be a 4th option: delayed cord cutting. That would not leave any blood to bank but technically isn't discarding it.

    DD1 5/23/14, DD2 12/5/16   Baby #3 on the way!

  • I kind of want to do the delayed cord clamping. I will have to talk to my OB about it. :0

    Type 1 Diabetic (high risk)

  • I chose discard but we're also doing delayed cord cutting.

  • I wanted to do delayed clamping but my hospital won't do it for C sections so we are doing public donation. We don't have a health history that would make private banking a necessity but I love that we could be benefitting someone else by donating it.
  • This is complicated with twins... as there is no option for twin A to bank or delay.  I don't feel okay with doing something beneficial for baby B and not for A, so I think we'll do nothing.

  • @sourlemon I can't edit it now but if you're delaying I'd vote discard since you won't be banking.

  • This reminds me that this is what I keep forgetting to ask the doctor about! Our (her?) cord blood is being used to test and see if she has inherited the genetic condition I carry, so I'm not sure if delaying or saving or donating are options. Because of a potential genetic risk, banking is intruiging to me, but I also don't know that the science would ever catch up in time to make the cost with it?
  • Plan A is delayed clamping, plan B was public/research donation. My Dr. said we won't know till much later, possibly even at delivery what the best option will be. She said because of my gestational diabetes it might not actually be a benefit for her to get that extra blood and leads to jaundice. I trust that she will do what's best when the time comes.
  • Delayed for sure... It's just standard care with homebirths unless cutting the cord is medically necessary for some crazy reason.

Due December 27th with baby #7

  • I have to discuss with my doctor.  I think we will do delayed cord clamping if it is an option, and if not we will do public banking.
  • Private bc of a genetic condition I have and husband is a carrier. 50/50 baby girl will have it or be a carrier. It's expensive, but worth it to us. @DiFazette, if u are interested in banking, definitely look into some more. Banking is often beneficial for siblings and close relatives. My baby's cord blood could help me!

  • @LauraH22 I have looked into it, which is why I contributed.  Public banks do not take donations from twins.  Delayed clamping is not an option for baby A, nether is private banking due to the nature of twin birth -there's another baby that needs to get delivered so there's no time for optional procedures.

  • I voted discard, but now remember something that the RN who is teaching the Birthing Class said about it. They keep it connected until it's done pulsing, or whatever it does. Then they have it cut off. So, I guess that would be more delayed cord cutting.

  • Since we used donor sperm we had been seriously considering it, but then we ended up with identical twins (so they already have a perfect genetic match and we know of a donor sibling who'll be just 4 months younger) and I'm not sure anymore, mainly about the expense of private for units that won't likely be helpful to the babies themselves, we won't be having more children who could benefit more from the units (identicals make poor matches since genetically close but not exact is the best) and we cannot donate publicly.
  • We are delaying cord clamping, so no option of banking.
  • You can donate cord blood!  It can save a life!
  • I love how many people are choosing public banking! I wish, wish, wish that we could do that. As a childhood leukemia survivor (finished chemo almost 25 years ago!) I personally know how important this can be to saving lives. I was lucky and didn't need a transplant, but there are so many who do. Unfortunately, as a cancer survivor, this makes me ineligible to donate cord blood. But I try to tell all my friends having babies about the amazing gift public banking is to someone you don't even know.
This is absolutely a very personal decision, and I applaud everyone for taking the time to consider their options. We will probably try and do delayed cord clamping for our baby, as public banking is not an option.

My oldest daughter is a leukemia survivor. Diagnosed at 2, she's now almost 9, chemo free for 4 1/2 years :) you're an inspiration!
