  • @ajstevenson, That sounds like really bad anxiety, mixed with not enough mental and physical stimulation. How big is the outside area he spends the day in?

  • We have just over an acre that has an underground fence. He's actually been crate trained since a puppy, so he (actually both) are in there while we're at work. SO works five minutes away and comes home during breaks, so the max amount of time they're crated is 4 hours. The only reason we don't let him stay outside and play during the day is that our road is pretty high traffic. I worry that if, heaven forbid, the underground fence fails or he houdinis (this has happened several times) out of his collar that he'll get hit. I've actually thought about getting him medicated for anxiety. He has a lot of the symptoms. One of my kitties had to be on Prozac for a little while. We had tried everything else with her and it was our last resort. But holy cow did it make a night and day difference.

@ajstevenson oh my gosh. That sounds terrible. DH and j have debated for about 11 years whetuor not we should get a dog, when, and what kind. Right now we have to wait, DD2 is scared of dogs because our neighbors got a puppy that loves to chase her down. So we have fish. One day I want a puppy, but then I hear stories like yours from friends....

  • @ajstevenson I haven't had as serious an issue with my dogs, but enough that I understand your pain. They can be so rewarding, and they can be so difficult. Maybe you can put him on medication and then take him to a better trainer? I feel like kicking a dog out of class for being unruly is kinda irresponsible, what's the owner supposed to do then? But maybe if he was calmed down a bit from meds, he could go through a training class and you guys could get some strategies to deal with him. We have trouble giving our dogs enough of our time and energy - even though they have a big yard, they want us out there with them to play, or they want to be taken on walks, and I know it's going to get harder with a baby.

@yellingbanana Dogs are awesome, don't be put off by the stories! My friends' dogs all have their issues, some more severe than others (one had to put a child lock on their fridge, their dog ate through the lock, ate moldy food and started tripping like he'd taken drugs...), but I think they would all say they still prefer having their dogs in their life. I would say maybe think about getting one that's older than the puppy stage - it is so much more work to raise a puppy than to bring an older dog into your family.
  • Yes @yellingbanana my story is definitely not meant to scare you off! I love, love, love my dog and honestly I wish I could feel the same for my SOs dog. We just do not have the same connection and as weird as it sounds, the dog has zero respect for me. It makes it very difficult to want to snuggle up with him.

I was texting with some girlfriends about it tonight. I'm really at a loss at this point on what to do because SO is so genuinely offended that I even suggest we rehome him. Every time we talk about the dogs it ends up very tense. And I understand where he's coming from. I don't have the ability to keep up with the dogs like my non-pregnant self did, so the majority of the responsibility falls on him. He feels like I'm telling him he's failing or not doing enough when I say that I don't think we're able to give this dog enough activity or interaction that he needs. I'm not, by the way, but I get how he could feel that is what I mean.

  • I have a child lock (one of those oven ones) on my garbage can because my 10yo dog thinks she's starving to death and was constantly getting into the trash. But she's awesome. Except the farts...Holy moly!

  • @sourlemon what is it with dog farts? Seriously, they're worse than period farts. And that's saying a lot!

  • @ajstevenson period farts?  Is that a thing?

  • Don't ever let a god have walnuts or almonds straight. I couldn't let my pup in for a week after she ate them off the trees.

Maybe it's just my family's problem... but yeah, we always have some nasty ones when aunt Flo comes to town.

  • @ajstevenson my farts don't stink. Ever. They are like roses ;) hahaha

  • Oh god, the dog farts. If we weren't used to it with one of mine, we would think he was dying every time he farts - it smells like he's filled with death.
  • @mysteryship only my 10yo dog has room evacuating farts. Once it was so bad the house had to be evacuated! Too bad the movers had to come that day...I'm sure they loved being there! My other 2 dogs farther but seriously don't stink. They all eat the same thing. I don't get it.

  • Dog farts are the worst!!!! Especially coming out of my 100lb black lab (cue gagging). My husky has a sensitive stomach, so when he gets a scrap of our food or sniffs around the kitchen for dropped food his farts are super gnarly, which then leads to him having gross poop. Ugh.

@ajstevenson yes, period farts are a thing! My coworkers and I talk about it often.. Especially when 95% of your building is staffed with women...
  • My 7lb dog stress farts in a way that takes it to another level. It's hard to comprehend how something so awful could come out of one so little and cute. She can definitely evacuate a room though.

  • I like when dogs look behind them all of a sudden when they fart, as if to say "what was that?"
  • My super brave 90 pound wonder mutt scares himself with his farts. Like he'll be lounging on the couch, let one rip, and then run terrified into the bathroom. Such a brave boy.

  • My lab has only scared himself once farting, but boy does he BELCH! Fed him this morning, was in the bathroom getting ready and heard a belch (DH and I are disgusting so heads up) so I say good one, thinking it was my husband. I poke my head out and he's staring at the dog and goes that was him! And boy is his breath nasty after he belches. Ugh.

  • @acreight13 My 85 pound pitbull scares himself too... so tough. He's also woken himself up before because the fart was so bad. Then look at DH and I like we did it.
