How much Milk

Hey mammas! I hope you're all doing great. I'm curious how much whole/homo/altnernative milk you're giving your babes? I'm giving the twins a 9oz bottle in the morning and that's it, they happily drink water the rest of the day including a bottle of warm water at night. I've been googling things and was surprised that some kids are drinking 1 litre of milk a day!

Re: How much Milk

  • My LO still isn't drinking much "milk" at all.  He nurses before bed and then when he wakes up.  He has a reaction to dairy, so whole milk is out.  He dislikes almond milk... we tried the new plant based milk, ripple, this weekend and he took a few sips.  We have our 15 month appt this wednesday, I will be bringing this up.  He loves water!

  • My guy is nursing 3+ times/day (night) still, and similarly won't really take cow milk. I'm not worried about it right now. He eats a decent amount of cheese and yogurt, too, which is part of my lack of worry. Our pediatrician wasn't concerned at all.
  • My son is probably drinking about 8 oz of cows milk per day. He is still nursing.

This is pretty much us too. She is starting to drink more cow's milk though but less than half a sippy per day I'd say. She loves cheese and yogurt and drinks a fair amount of water each day.
  • My lo loves milk, probably more than she loves me. Her pedi said to make sure she has 16-20 oz a day and between milk and cheese she gets more than 20. Ehh, she's good!
  • We give DD 8oz WCM in the morning before daycare, they give her a cup of milk with lunch (sometimes she drinks it, sometimes not) and she nurses twice in the evening.  On weekends she typically has 12-16 oz WCM total plus the two nursing sessions.  She also eats yogurt and cheese frequently.
  • We are nursing a lot still. Have not given any milk yet except for some homemade ice cream one night.
  • Between bm and alternative milk 24 oz. We struggle with drinking water so milk is our main source of liquid.
  • At her 15 month appointment the doctor suggested 16-20 ounces of whole milk per day (a hand out they gave said that too much milk can decrease appetite for solids and lead to iron deficiency anemia).

We aren't measuring her intake, but offer whole milk during breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks (water in between).  I also still breastfeed when she wakes up for the day and when she goes to bed (and sometimes when putting her down for a nap).  I'm thinking she's getting between 16-20 ounces between whole milk and breast milk.
  • Interesting! My ped said no more than 16 oz of cows milk per day
  • Lo has about 8oz of coconut milk in a smoothie in the morning. She won't drink it any other way.

Mine said the same thing. LO will only drink about 8oz of whole milk in the morning. She also gets A little coconut milk in a smoothie and cheese during the day.
  • 16oz a day. We break them in 4oz increments: Morning, 2 naps, and evening.............he still gets that one "morning" bottle at around 5:00am. I know, I know, but this momma needs some sleep.

@virginiaunicorn11 what does your pedi say about breastmilk or milk in general and teeth? My pedi is so hardcore, she has beeen telling me for months that I need to cut that one middle of the night feeding (yes, she considers 5:00am a MOTN feeding). LO drinks plenty of water throughout the day in his straw cup. BTW, my lo only drinks cow's milk.

  • @beemaya83 My Pedi and dentist are both very supportive of nighttime feedings right now. In fact, I know my dentist was nursing her daughter at night about this time too.

Actually, I lied to my pedi for months about sleep. She gave me a huge lecture against co-sleeping and told me at 6 months to let him cry "even if he cries until he throws up, that's ok". My husband and I both have great teeth and LO is developing normally and slowly cutting back his night feeds, so I'm not worrying about it.

We moved to Europe a few months ago, and our new pediatrician doesn't say boo about sleep - it's a parenting choice, not a medical issue, as far as they're concerned
This. I'm constantly surprised on here about the things that pediatricians are trying to dictate.

We are in the same boat. DS LOVES Nosa fruit yogurt and Fage full fat plain yogurt. He also loves cream cheese, marscapone cheese, vanilla soy milk, and any cheese with pasta and tomato sauce. The reason milk is recommended for kids is because its rich in calcium and Vitamin D, but if you can substitute these nutrients in other ways, you should be A-OK.

  • I was on a 36 hour business trip. DH thought it was easier to give cow's milk than pour a bag of pumped milk (no comment). My kid is hooked! Still maybe only 6-8 ounces/day, but he regularly asks for milk now, and it relieves nursing a bit. A week ago, he wouldn't touch the stuff.
