Failed glucose test

Re: Failed glucose test

  • @ajstevenson I get what you're saying. Wouldn't taking in a huge amount of sugar after fasting cause anyone a big spike? I guess eating healthier can only be good but im really stressing.

It shouldn't cause a big spike. Your body has several ways of dealing with sudden influxes of sugars, such as: rapid insulin response, movement to push sugar into cells, and storage in your liver; to name a few. The 3 hr test shows which -if any- are not performing as they should.

if you numbers are high in the 1 hr, it should be a change of diet to correct. If the 2&3 hr draws are high then it's more likely an issue with your body not dealing with its own insulin well.

  • Took the 3 hour test yesterday and got all my results this morning from the lab ( Kaiser emails you when the tests are done). I passed.

Good thoughts for those of you still waiting on your results and good thoughts for those of you facing GD.

  • I have mine tomorrow afternoon, at 1:10.

I also have an U/S before that at 11:45, so I am wondering what I should eat in between that won't throw off anything. Usually the U/S is 20-30 minutes, so I'd be done around 12:15... as long as I get in right away (the last time I had an U/S, I got there early and was done with it all before the time my original appt. was supposed to be).

I was instructed to eat normally, but feel if I don't eat something in between... I will be STARVING when I drink the drink and I'd like something in my stomach. I can go down to the cafeteria in between since I doubt I'd be able to get in right after (and then have my monthly at 1:30 and probably back to labs for blood draw after that). Or, could bring something with... but what? Hard cheese? Hard boiled eggs? I have both at home right now.

  • @Kacie209 - protein is best, and minimize sugar and carbs.  So eggs and cheese are probably good options.  You could also do yogurt if you get one that doesn't have tons of sugar.  Almonds.  Water.
  • @penelope4612 Thanks! I do have some small bags of almonds, so I'll bring those with along with a bottle of water anyway. I planned on eggs with cheese for breakfast.

That is really super unfair considering you can barely keep anything down anyway!
  • Awe @ashleaf2018 that's a bummer! After how I felt during/after the 3 hour test I keep hoping as few ppl as possible will also have to do it! Best wishes for good results!
  • @ashleaf2018 sorry hun! Did they tell you by how much??? Hopefully you'll pass the 3 hour!

  • @KatieJo1205 I know, I am really dreading it :(

@mforinger Thanks! Honestly with my MS/nausea I can't keep too many sweets/greasy foods down, so I don't think a GD diagnosis will change my diet that much. More or less it'll just change my routine as far as when I eat, how much I eat at each meal, and the whole pricking my finger thing. I'm pretty meh about the diagnosis either way because I know it is manageable, I just hate the dang tests for it. :(

@sammyl1221 No they didn't say by how much, just that it was "elevated" so they wanted me to come back and do the three hour. I hope I pass it too but it honestly won't be the end of the world if I don't, for reasons listed above. :)
  • @ashleaf2018 has your doctor talked to you about at home IVs therapy or regularly scheduled IV therapy? My doctor mentioned that if I had one more trip to labor and delivery for IV therapy she was going to schedule me for regular at home IV therapy.

  • @ajstevenson No, she hasn't mentioned it but I didn't actually get to see her today. I do have an appointment with her next Thursday so she may want to talk to me about it then.
  • Well I just got the call that I failed the 1 hour. Since I'm out of town for work today and tomorrow I'll have to do it Friday if I can get the time off work. Ugh. They didn't say by how much.

  • I just found out this afternoon I failed the one hour test. The nurse told me my levels were slightly elevated at 138... I go next week for the 3 hour test.
  • Is it just me or does it seem like most women fail the 1 hour test???? Everyone I've talked to says they failed it! I just don't understand, maybe there's something wrong about drinking a crap ton of sugar on an empty stomach then drawing blood just an hour later? I have mine tomorrow and I'm already planning to hear that I failed it. Blah.
  • Just got my results back for my 3 hour and I passed. It's a miracle.

@gigemily09 I read somewhere that they try to keep the screening numbers for the first test pretty low and that most people go on to pass the second round. I personally think the way the test is conducted is crap. I agree, i don't think anyone's body does particularly well with fasting then sugar spiking. I also don't think it's very healthy for a baby to go through and that pisses me off.

Just went online to my messages with the online portal that my hospital uses and my results were in shortly after I did the blood draw... I passed!

According to the test information for mine, <140mg/dl is normal, and >=140 is abnormal. Here is more info that the portal information gave me:

"ACOG guidelines suggest that a screening test threshold of 140 has
10% less sensitivity than a threshold of 130 but fewer false-positive
results; either threshold is acceptable. When the threshold is lowered from
140 to 130, the number of women requiring glucose tolerance testing
increases from 14% to 23%, or approximately one quarter of patients.
Because the precise cost-benefit ratio of diagnosing GDM remains unresolved,
    either threshold is acceptable."

    My results: 102 mg/dL

  • Ladies,  I failed my 1 hour test. =( I feel like a failure and have been sobbing for the past hour.  I love being pregnant,  I am just not good at it.  Let me clarify,  there is something magical about growing a person and no matter the pain, pushing them out. All the weird shit that happens along the way,  I can do without haha and that I don't love.  I have hyperemesis and have been sick so much during both pregnancies. I envy those women who have a pretty smooth ride.  I guess I am just emo today but I am just feeling like why can't 1 thing go smoothly for me???? I have the 3 hour tomorrow.  DH said I'm acting like they just told me I'm dying or something.  I know it's not the end of the world. .just really hurts I guess.
  • I have my test tomorrow at 7:00 am. I am getting nervous! I looked up my pre-pregnancy blood levels (had a full scale done about 3 weeks before finding out I was pregnant to figure out why I wasn't getting pregnant) - and I already had somewhat high glucose levels back then. Not "fail" level - but still close to the top of the range 91 out of the 70-99 range. During the time, nothing was brought up about it, but now I wonder if it will play any part on my test tomorrow.

ava.vaudine don't feel bad! I honestly think a lot of women fail the 1 hour test, almost everyone I've talked to says they did and then went on to pass the 3 hour one. I think the 1 hour test is crap and doesn't measure it accurately, because what normal person goes 12 hours without eating then drinks a ton of sugar?! So don't beat yourself up about it! I just had my test today and I'm totally not getting my hopes up.

There are many versions of the 1 hr test. Majority of them don't have you fast at all, or not longer than 3-4 hrs.

  • @DiFazette I totally agree with you. It sucks to have "failed" the 1 hour (I know 100% it's not my fault, just my body's reaction to this pregnancy) and it's gonna suck to do the 3 hour test and take the day off work....but I understand the compromised newborn issues. It's better to address the issues now and be prepared for things than to have worse complications.

Nothing sucks worse than complications with the baby. Even my 2 days with the NICU for DD1 was scary as crap! And her issue was "only jaundice".

Love that, @DiFazette!  Yes, it sucked knowing I failed both the one hour and the three hour, and it's a pain to test my blood sugar levels 4 times a day and watch what/when I eat, but I keep reminding myself that I am doing this all for my little one and I want her to be the healthiest she can possibly be (and hopefully not too huge so I have a somewhat smooth delivery!)  It really is all about the perspective.

  • I totally agree that it's all worth it in the end to know your baby is developing properly and won't have to suffer, I just wish that there was a more standardized practice on how to test. That's what frustrates me. I was told I couldn't eat anything after midnight the night before my 1 hour test. Well I ate dinner at 730 and had a small snack before bed around 930, but my appointment wasn't until 9 am the next day, so I went 12 hours without eating anything substantial. I was so jittery after drinking the glucose, and still was when they took my blood, so I'm just not getting my hopes up in passing. I just think it's so odd that there's so many different parameters that different doctors use.
  • Had my one hour this morning (my OB waits until first week of 3rd trimester so HIV test can be done at same time). Got a call from the lab that one of my blood samples was hemolyzed...breathed a huge sign of relief when she said it was the HIV tube and not the glucose lol

About to head in for my second blood draw of the day...and getting pizza after!
  • Failed the one hour that I took on Friday by 3 points :( I have PCOS so I shouldn't be surprised

But I have to get my thyroid levels checked anyway, so might as well do the 3 hour at the same time...BLAH
  • I had my 1 hour and failed so miserably they are skipping the 3 hour. So looks like I am joining the GD club...  I think I'm most nervous because I get sick eating most foods and the foods I can handle are the ones I will likely have to avoid.  But I will do whatever it takes for this little one.
  • I had my one hour yesterday and failed by 3 points. Going for 3 hour on Tuesday morning. Any tips from the ladies who passed?
  • Got out of the 3 hour about two hours ago, should have the results by Monday/Tuesday. Those first two hours are rough, definitely moments where I thought I was going to pass out! But wasn't as hungry as I thought I'd be when it was all done.
  • @ashleygorokhovsky you can't "trick" the 3 hour...which is why you fast for 12 hours. Your body is gonna do its thing.
    DD1 5/23/14, DD2 12/5/16   Baby #3 on the way!

  • Late to the party (as usual)...just heard back that I failed the 1 hour test.  Going in for the 3 hour on Tuesday.   :(
  • Failed the 1 hour by ONE point. My doc measures at 135, I had a 136. Have to take the whole day off work Monday to do the 3 hour.
