TW Blighted Ovum

Hello!

I am 99% out. This morning I went to my first ultrasound at 8 weeks 4 days and they saw a gestational sac measuring the expected time, but no baby. My doctor thinks its a blighted ovum and wants to see me next week for another ultrasound. In my heart I know that I will not see anything next week. I am now debating between waiting for a natural MC or having the D&C. Both options terrify me a little bit. Any experiences with any particular option?. It was nice sharing a little in this group and I wish you all healthy and happy pregnancies. Perhaps we will meet on a future board

I'm so sorry to hear this. My MC happened naturally and was physically painless, but I know that's not the case for everyone. The loss boards often have several posts on the subject and might be helpful.

My miscarriage was natural, but incredibly painful. I had contractions and all that, but I'm glad that I didn't have to have a D&C. I know there's a risk of injury or scarring with a D&C. Ultimately, it's you're decision, unless your body won't cooperate. You have to decide if some possible contraction pains, having no idea when it'll happen, and a natural miscarriage are better for you, or if you need to risk the complications of a D&C to get everything over quickly. It's a very personal decision and there's no wrong choice.

I'm so sorry to hear this. I had one natural miscarriage and one D&E. If you have a choice and your insurance covers it, I would go with the D&E. It was virtually painless for me - just light cramping for a few days after - and it was much less traumatic. I would definitely not recommend the pill that you can take to start the natural MC. A friend of mine had a bad experience with it and ended up needing an emergency D&E anyways.

I'm so sorry! When I had a blighted ovum I decided to have the D&C. I liked that I had more control over it and I felt good having a doctor being part of the process. There's a risk in letting your body mc naturally as well as with the D&C. Ultimately there isn't a right answer, just whatever works for you. I also agree with a PP, if you are offered a pill to start the process naturally, I wouldn't do it. I've heard it's really painful and unpredictable.

I'm am so sorry. When it was confirmed that I had a blighted ovum I opted into a D&C, I regretted it only because I ended up with some scarring from the procedure. I also just recently had a natural MC and I wish it would have just come and gone because I had to wait 3 weeks before my body actually started to miscarry, and I almost feel like that was harder on me than when I had a D&C. I wish you the best.

**lurking** I am so sorry for your loss. I just had my third loss. I have done all 3, natural, pills and D&C. Highly recommend D&C. It's all over quickly with minimal recovery. I went back to work after a day of rest. Light bleeding. Natural was painful and took forever, weeks of heavy bleeding. Also random gushes were unpredictable and made life difficult. Pills were awful. Didn't work right, was in and out of the office, just was a mess and super painful. I had painkillers but they made me feel groggy amd still crampy. I hope you find peace in whatever method you choose. They all have their own risks.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Personally I have had a blighted ovum, I originally attempted to have a natural miscarriage. It was an extremely long process. My situation sounds similar to yours. The first ultrasound you find out it's most likely not viable, you then have to go back in a week later to confirm. I continued to work and passed part of it naturally, it was awful! I had the worst cramps and so much unknown I had so much anxiety. I thought it passed a week later I had stopped bleeding. I went in for another ultrasound to confirm, it didn't fully pass. I had to wait another week and still didn't pass. I finally had to go in for a D&C. I found out about my Blighted Ovum on Black Friday and didn't have a D&C until Dec 23. It was dragged on and painful, the worst part was there was little to no closure I felt like I just lived in limbo for a month.

My second miscarriage I went in the next day for my D&C, I told my doctor I didn't even want to attempt a natural miscarriage again. Instead of dealing with it for a month I was able to start bouncing back right away and was starting to feel like me again a month later.

The recovery for a D&C is nothing, I was out to brunch the day after mine. You go in, drag that day and the only recovery I had was some cramping (not nearly as bad as the natural).

I am so sorry that you are going through this. With my blighted ovum, they give me pills to help pass the pregnancy. I read up on the pills (can't remember what they were) and read that sometimes the reaction to them can be pretty painful so I waited until the weekend to start on them. I started spotting on Friday and then woke up super early on Saturday and started on the pills. I started bleeding pretty soon after and I actually had no pain except for a little bit of cramping and actually bled less than during a regular period and only bled for 2 days and was done. I called the OB because I was sure I hadn't passed the pregnancy so they gave me another dose of the medication and I bled very little after that again. Sure enough I had passed everything.

So I would suggest going the natural way with the help of pills. There is a risk with going either way... talk to you dr about what those are so you can make the best decision. Going in I wanted a D&C and my doctor discouraged me from it and I am so glad I listened, although I am sure that would not have been the case if the m/c would have been incomplete the first time.

I took the pills for my miscarriage and it was terrible. They didn't work the first time, so they had me take them a second time at a higher dose. That didn't work either. The whole process was dragged out about three weeks. It was torture to wait. When the bleeding finally started it was in large gushes all at once. I had 2 hours where I was literally stuck on the toilet bc there was so much blood/tissue coming out and terrible contractions. If I ever have to go through another miscarriage, I will likely choose d&c.

i am so so sorry you are going through this. It is heartbreaking regardless of what you choose and I wouldn't wish this on anyone.

I miscarried naturally, but not necessarily by choice. It all happened over a weekend. I started cramping and bleeding heavier on Saturday morning, but later afternoon I felt like i was in full on labor. Super strong and painful contractions that lasted for a minute or so and then stopped for a few minutes before starting again. About an hour after that I saw the sac pass and the pain vanished completely. I had some mild bleeding and very light cramping for the next day or two and then just spotting for the next week and it was all done. I don't regret the natural miscarriage, but if you decide to go that route, i would certainly ask for prescription pain medication just in case you need it.

I am so sorry. A couple years ago I was diagnosed with a blighted ovum at over 6 weeks. I waited 2 weeks to miscarry naturally. Being in limbo for that two weeks was awful. After two weeks we scheduled the D&C. It was completely painless. The wait was finally over, I could heal emotionally and move on.

Ladies...the D&C procedure went really well. It was really fast and I have no pain. I havent gone through regular MC, but I recommend the D&C, it provided some closure for us and seems that the body bounces back to normal a little faster. I wish you all the best in your pregnancies! Bye ladies
