HFM during first tri?

PGALmindset vent/worry:

So I definitely came down with a rash all over my body yesterday. I called the oncall doctor and he said that I had antibodies in my previous bloodwork for the coxsackie virus and that it wasn't likely that I would actually get HFM again. I told him my entire family had it, both ds1, ds2 and DH. He said they'd just be more vigilant during my ultrasounds in the second and third trimester.

I called the office again today to talk to a nurse because things just feel off. I don't feel pregnant at all. I know I'm only 5 weeks, but from having a blighted ovum before, I just keep panicking about getting to that first ultrasound and seeing no baby.

The nurse actually did seem concerned that I would be displaying HFM and wants to confirm it with a blood test. They are also going to do a hormone level check today and Wednesday. If you can spare any good thoughts, send them this way<3

Re: HFM during first tri?

  • Where is your rash located and what does it look like? HFM typically only has rash lesions on the hands, feet, and mouth (sound stupid to say that haha) but its unusual for it to be generalized over your entire body. Do you have a fever? Have you tried benadryl or anything to make the rash go away?

  • See I definitely don't find that to be true with our case. Both of my boys had it, confirmed by dr, and it was literally all over their body. My DS1's was so bad that his blisters popped and skin peeled. I felt achy on Friday. I've taken Benadryl and the spots are kinda cycling from pinprick bumps, to large raised blisters, to dark small dried bumps.
  • Oh your poor kiddos! There are strains of the virus that cause more generalized rashes but they're not as common. You guys must be really lucky! :(

I don't have a lot of other advice for you but I'll be thinking positive thoughts and hope your labs come back with good news!
  • My DD and I had it last year. She actually never got a rash on her hands, feet, or mouth. It was on her thighs and upper arms. The only symptoms I had were body soreness and mouth tenderness.

I actually told my husband that I thought I had it again because the sides of my mouth at really chapped and they are starting to form little cuts. LO and behold, I get an email from DD's school that it is going around again. Luckily she hasn't had any symptoms, so I don't think that I actually have it but I will definitely be asking my doctor tomorrow.

The he first time, her doctor told us there was nothing that we could do but let it pass. Just make sure you are constantly washing hands and sheets. Good luck!
