Weekly Pregnancy Chatter 9/19

This is the weekend chatter thread to... you know... talk about pregnancy and stuff. Wondering what everybody's opinion on doctors vs midwifes vs doulas? Find a good cure for something that's been ailing you?  Just had one of those "holy smokes I'm GROWING a HUMAN like it's a potted plant or something, but INSIDE MY BODY" moments?  Have a rando ask when the baby is due and you're like, "Wait, I'm not even showing yet, not sure if I should be polite or rude at this point"?   Whatever comments or stories or questions or etcetera you got that don't quite fit into the other organizational threads, this is probably the spot.

    I left school early today because I was feeling so awful. I feel like a jerk to my kids. I hate to complain, but damn. I need to feel better soon.

    @mamabear2015 I was taking a long road trip by myself with DS when he was a little over a year old and was hit with food poisoning mid-trip. I felt so guilty having to drag him into nasty gas station bathrooms every 20 minutes so I could throw up/throw down. Of course I held him because the bathrooms were so gross, so the poor thing had a front row seat to the hellistic show. He was such a trooper, but I won't ever forget the fear on his face every time he saw me throw up. It makes me so sad he had to experience that.

    I abandoned fruit for junk food this time. It's not super accurate either but it's more amusing!

    This insomnia is KILLING me. I just want to sleep like a normal human :(

    Everyone keeps telling me how rested I look. I am blown away by that because I am just so exhausted all the damn time. I guess thats pregnancy glow? Idk but I want to snap each time because I am far from well rested. Jokes on me I guess?

    @HarryPotterandCats

    I hear you! I look in the mirror and look like death! I am pale as a ghost, my eyes are half shut most of the day, especially this week after being so sick. But I get into the office and everyone tells me "Oh I'm glad you are all good now, you look so good and healthy"

    I literally got pissed off and wanted to tell them all to F OFF, because I don't feel well, I am not all good and I also sure as hell don't look good or healthy. I'm sure it's the hormones but I felt like they were trying to say, did you really have to take 4 days off, you don't look that sick?

    The only thing that's better now is my skin, it is smoother. BUT it really doesn't glow lol

    Hi guys. Just want to share this. I seem to have picked up a cough and an infection and now i need to take amoxicillin. I am 9w6d today, 10 weeks tomorrow. Currently in bed trying to recover. Slight temperature too. Anyone had any experience with this? Doctor said it was safe but i always worry.... Any thoughts, advice welcome....

    Amoxicillin is a class B pregnancy risk - there is no evidence of risk in human pregnancy.  You should be fine to take it.

    Apologies if this has already been asked, but I was wondering if you ladies have any suggestions for informative but non-overwhelming books about pregnancy/childbirth/breastfeeding/caring for a newborn/etc? Trying to find one in every category basically lol. Originally I was going to pick up "what to expect" but read a lot of reviews from people saying that it was a laundry list of all the things that could go wrong and caused them a lot of anxiety, which I definitely don't want (I have enough of that already :) ). Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

    @kitkat8387 My OB told me the first time around "What to Expect" is like the bible of pregnancy. I have it, read it, and honestly wasn't afraid of it. I found it to be really informative, so by learning that info, it made me less scared. I also read Natural Hospital Birth and really enjoyed it.

    For breastfeeding, I used kellymom.com. Try not to get too consumed in different subjects at once because it could be really overwhelming. I tried to do too much and ended up getting burned out. Plus, I felt like the women on TB were really resourceful, too. Have fun!!

    @kitkat8387 Another vote for "what to expect", very informative and not scary at all. I've heard good things about the one by Mayo Clinic but haven't personally picked it up.

    @smallanimal

    amoxicillin is the #1 antibiotic prescribed for pregnant women and is safe to take.

    I'm one of the lucky ones who is allergic to it so they always have to find an alternative. And this reminds me now that I completely forgot to take my antibiotic after lunch. Shoot!

    For a book on breastfeeding, I recommend "The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding" by Diane Wiessinger. Very very informative. I checked it out from my library last pregnancy but seriously considering buying it this go around to have to refer back to and be able to take my time reading.

    @kitkat8387 if you want a funny one for a good laugh check out "what to expect when you're expected" it's written from the point of view of the baby and full of sarcasm.

    I second this!  I had a LOT of trouble breastfeeding and read a lot of books - this was the best.

    @kitkat8387 for newborn care, we liked the video about the 5 Ss - The Happiest Baby on the Block.  Honestly, most parenting books aren't really helpful til after the infant stage but that video showed us some good tips for a fussy baby, especially for DH!

    @smallanimal With DS I got Strep Throat at about 5/6 weeks and was put on amoxicillin and Nasonex (nasal spray). It cleared up the infection and DS was perfectly fine.

    @TheJerilu I love that! How much fun is that.

    @HarryPotterandCats I keep getting that too. I feel like a train wreck and my face is covered with zits but people keep telling me I look great. Wtf. I'm grateful I don't look as bad as I feel but how??

    Also, my mother gave me her copy of What to Expect from 1987.  :D Thanks mom. That's not likely to be outdated at all.
