Skin secrets?

So since my BFP, my face has pretty much exploded with acne and I look like a teenager. I know most traditional acne treatments aren't safe during pregnancy, so I'm wondering what you ladies are using to keep your skin looking nice during first tri? I am apparently not one of the women whose skin glows during pregnancy.

Re: Skin secrets?

  • Glowing is code for oily and covered in zits! I just make sure I wash my face super well and then hope it goes away soon. My first pregnancy it cleared up in the second trimester and then came back in the third.

  • I just keep mine clean daily with a mild facial soap. It got better by second trimester my first time around though!

  • I am allergic to benzoyl peroxide so don't have much luck with acne treatments even when I'm not pregnant. Normally my skin is fine though but since getting pregnant I have the huge under the skin acne that hurts!!!! I hope it goes away FAST
  • This is happening to me too. With my first pregnancy I ever had this problem.  Now at like every pore is clogged. I got a facial last wknd and it def helped. I am making sure to exfoliate regularly and that is making big diff as well.
  • I broke out a lot with my first and for me it was an issue of makeup. Once I switched from MAC to a natural mineral Tarte foundation it cleared right up. This time that's still the makeup I use but I still get one huge zit every month!

  • I'm always curious of the old wives tale "Girls steal your beauty" and little boys will give you the pregnancy glow and how accurate it has been for people!

I have two DDs and remember having acne during the first trimester and this time around I haven't had any, but of course I have no idea what I'm having yet.

I've always used Aveeno for my face wash and moisturizer!

@h&p_momma It's been the opposite for me. I broke out with DS but not with DD.

  • I have been using Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay (you can find it on Amazon) mixed with apple cider vinegar. I also use witch hazel as a toner every night and morning. It has really helped with acne and clogged pores and bonus that it is natural.

  • Sulfur soap! I still have some from last pregnancy, I was covered in backne. A friend of mine swears by it- it dries up your skin though, so not sure about face but it was amazingly effective. I got it off Amazon, they sell it at trader joes/ whole foods type places though
  • I swear by the Clinique 3 step system, plus their charcoal cleanser. Totally worth it!
  • I've been using the clarisonic face washer.  It's pretty much like a sonicare toothbrush for the face.  I also do witch hazel afterwards.  I still get some breakouts though.

  • Thanks for the suggestions ladies, I think I've got some good ideas for new things to try!
  • I'll second @SP128 and the Clarisonic brush. I've always had skin problems but as soon as I started using the brush, my skin just started looking more fresh. It's been two years and while I still have a few issues here and there, I still get giddy sometimes when I look in the mirror and see a clear face. One of the little (but kinda big) things in life! Good luck!
  • With DS I used Eminence organics clear skin line. I had horrible oily skin and breakouts. It was a life changer. So far I've been lucky this time but if it gets bad I'll most likely be switching back.
  • I had the worst acne as a teenager. It didn't clear up until I was into my 20s. I started using a clay based face wash from LUSH. The one I use is called aquamarina. Since then, I only occassionally break out (like finals week, or sometimes when I'm on my period). I think that face wash has helped, but it could also be that I finally "grew out of it". When I do get an individual zit, I cover it with some of the green/mint mud mask paste or toothpaste. Just cover it once a day completely and let it dry. It doesn't get rid of it immediately, but it seems to dry them up faster than not doing anything. Goodluck!
  • @SP128 and @L1C4gal did you find the price of the clarisonic brush to be worth it over cheaper models?
  • @MoshiMoshi7 I have the Mary Kay version and it works well.

  • MoshiMoshi7 I don't remember doing much research or cost comparing--I was desperate so I just took my dermatologist's recommendation and ran with it. I can't speak to the other brands but the cost of the Clarisonic was definitely worth it to me! I would have even paid more, but that's from the perspective of having really terrible skin beforehand. I don't change out the brushes nearly as often as they recommend (like...not even close :#), but I rinse and dry it off really well each time I use it and have never had any problems. So that makes it less expensive over time. But it sounds like the Mary Kay version could be a good option too! When in doubt, I usually obsess over Amazon reviews (just not in this case apparently, haha).

Just to piggy back on this, I soak my brush head in peroxide every couple weeks to get it really clean as well.
  • Good idea @champhe! I'll have to start doing that.
