First Time Mom check in 9/22

It's not Tuesday, but I don't think we've had a first time mom check in yet. So,... checking in.

How are you doing? Do you have your first appointment soon, or have you had one/some already? Do you have any big plans or transitions before the baby comes: babymoons/vacation, moving, work changes, adopting a pet? Anything different that you'd rather share is totally fine.

Re: First Time Mom check in 9/22

  • No symptoms yet, but I do sort of have a baby moon planned! We planned it a while ago before we were TTC (though knew it might end up being a baby moon). We're going to Palm Springs in late January. DH needs to be in socal for a work thing, so I'm tagging along and tacking on a vacation. I hope it's warm-ish, but anything will be better than the east coast in January.

  • @doxiemoxie212 Palm Springs sounds fun!! Also glad to see another TTGPer over here! Welcome!

No real symptoms yet - just lots and lots of little, annoyances. My first appointment is Oct 17 and I can't wait! I think it's just an U/S and meeting with the nurse. Then I don't see my Dr until about 11.5 weeks.

We are having our parents over tomorrow night to tell them. A bit early, I know but we are all really close and I want them to be the first to know.

Im in grad school. Graduation day is May 14th and EDD is May 29... so might be the rare one praying to go past my due date! We had no idea this would happen so soon but we are sooo excited!

May do a baby moon over my spring break in March if I feel up to it.
  • @ShadeofGreen816 yeah! I'm excited. I totally thought I was going to be out since I had BFNs the two days before AF was supposed to come.

I'm really unsure how I'm going to keep this a secret. I don't want to tell anyone before I tell my mom, and I want to tell her in person, so I have to wait a month until she comes to visit. Eep!
  • @doxiemoxie212 I thought I was out after two BFNs the week before AF was due too! Glad to see you here.

I'm totally with you and @shadeofgreen816 that I really want to tell my mom first and in person (not hard as I see her at least once a week) but I think I want to keep it a secret from my Dad until after our first ultrasound. He is so excited for a grandchild but I really don't want to get his hopes up if something were to go wrong.

How are you ladies planning to tell your parents??

@ShadeofGreen816, I'm in school too. My undergrad. I have one term left (we are on terms not semesters). I could have finshed it over the summer, but I decided to take the summer off and do fall. My classes start next week. Now that we are expecting, I wish I'd just sucked it up and taken summer courses. Oh well- only three more months! I've had serious senioritis for a while. I hope your school goes well all the way until May! I shouldn't even complain about my measly 12 weeks of classes.

@doxiemoxie212, I hope you have a nice trip! We don't get a lot of snow in the Pacific NW valleys (too rainy and mild) Sometimes I'm jealous of the East coasts' snow. (Idk if you're where there is snow?). I haven't been to Palm Springs, but I was near there (at a cabin in the San Bernardino forest) in June. It should still be warm in January. Going to southern CA in June was wayyy too hot for me.

We talked about going on some kind of trip with just the two of us. I'm hesitant to spend a lot of money with a baby on the way (feels like I should be saving more?). It would be cool to go up to Vancouver, BC though. SO and I have talked about doing that for almost 4 years now. Maybe we just need to do it! (I'd have to get a passport)

edited because Holy Typos Batman! I need to slow down and proofread what I am typing.
  • @tumbleweed I live in NYC, so yeah... snow. But it turns into gross grey sludge in about an hour. I went to Vancouver for a work trip, and I loved it! But that was in the summer, so IDK.
  • Forgot to mention MH is a HUGE Chicago Cubs fan!! So we just bought tickets to the first game of the playoffs, although it is only the first week of October, it may be our last real trip before the LO

  • I'm also in grad school but doing it through distance as I work (so very slowly)

I live on the East coast of Canada where we get a ton of snow. It's already cooling off here big time. I'm not ready! Even though I love fall.

Im 7 weeks 4 days and symptoms seem to be ramping up a bit (which calms me down a bit)

It still seems so surreal to me!
  • @doxiemoxie212 yeah a month would be hard! I almost think we could do it if it weren't for a trip to KY next week with friends where we'll be doing the "Bourbon Trail" and I'll have to explain my sobriety. It's with our best friends that live across the street and I work with the wife so I decided she would probably be the first friend I told - she'll end up knowing anyway and if something WERE to happen, I'll need her support.

@NurseK2016 We are having them over tomorrow under the pretense of celebrating MH's bday (two days ago). I bought two picture frames that just say "The best parents get promoted to grandparents" and I think I'm just going to put a pic of my positive HPT and a post it that says "Baby [Lastname] due Memorial Day 2017!"

@tumbleweed I'm so jealous you'll be done!! My last semester is not so much school work but lots of time in the clinic - between that and work probably 5 pretty long days per week. I'm wondering why I thought that sounded doable!!
  • Might be just me, but I love snow. Probably because we seldom get any. I love the rain too, but when it rains for 14 days straight and you are always cold and wet, it gets old. Winter here is a mix of warmer, rainy days, or cold, dry days. It has never snowed enough for me to get tired of it. Snow also shuts down the cities where I live (western OR). Luckily most city buses still run, but all of the preschools, k-12, and some colleges close. I'm sure that will be less amusing to me some day when I have a kid I can't send to school, but I also need to be at work.
  • I'm originally from Russia and I find that I miss snow in winter, just a little bit (living in WA now). Not the ice though!

On the pregnancy front: I finally got an obgyn! I felt super unprepared for not finding one before getting pregnant. Now I have a couple of appointments scheduled, first being an u/s on the 5th. Super excited about that.

We are also in the middle of trying to sell out apartment and buy a house, so that's a little stressful too. But we have an agreement to get a puppy once we move so really looking forward to that as well. I really miss having one.
  • @NurseK2016 The only idea I can think of for telling my parents is mailing them some early halloween cards. With a poem about spooky halloween stuff, and then working in something like, "what else is scary?" and that SO and I are going to be parents! I don't know if a card exists that I can work with, so I might have to make one. I'm clearly not poetic, but SO can help. He is a clever writer. I'm not very close to any of my parents. I usually just talk to them on holidays, so if I call randomly, they will know something is up. A card would be more of a "suprise"- plus they can keep it! If I called one of them to tell, it would probably be my stepdad. But then I worry about hurt feelings from my mom (she divorced him when I started college). Maybe my birth father would be offended too? Idk. Just going to avoid that!

@contrarationem I didn't have one prepared either. My first u/s and appointment is also the 5th! Good luck with your appointment and with buying a house. We are just trying to find a bigger, more private place to rent. Idk what WA is like, but I live in the Portland area and "the housing crisis" is very real. I really do hope you are having a better time at it than we are. This will be the 3rd time we've moved around here, and ideally the last for quite a while. I don't enjoy it.
  • I'm feeling pretty good at 7+4. I've had some weird symptoms like sneezing constantly and pregnancy brain already. I have my first ultrasound tomorrow morning and prenatal appointment in the afternoon.

Our house is a complete mess as we are in the middle of a full reno. The goal before baby is to finish the majority of the interior work which is drywall, paint, install floors and rip out and replace kitchen. There is too much to do!
  • @tumbleweed I think that sounds cute!!

    How did you get tickets?
  • @Cubslove12 MH bought them on stubhub...I can't believe how much he payed but suppose this may not happen again for a while

  • Hello all, I won't be able to comment too much on the previous posts, I'm on mobile and it's too hard for me right now lol
I'm 5 weeks 3 days, intermittent symptoms, sore boobs, upset stomach. Today at mid day I was exhausted. Legit put my head down at my desk between clients and took a 15 min nap.
First appt is 10/7, which I can't wait for because then I'll feel comfortable telling my sister, in laws, SIL and father. My mom already knows. Then only 4 more weeks and everyone can know!
Nothing super major for me, my DH works for himself and is trying to build a campground currently, so that takes up a lot of time.
Looking forward to getting to know you ladies better!
  • @tumbleweed it's pretty bad here too, pricing wars and all that. Not looking forward to that.

@tumbleweed I love your "scary" Halloween card idea!

We already told my parents in person. We're going to tell his parents when we get back in town, and I'm dreading it. My MIL is just over the top nice, and always so excited for even the little things in my life. She just tries to include me and asks me questions whenever we're together to get me talking. But the truth is I'm just quiet IRL and the type of person that prefers to listen and only talks when I have something worth contributing. So her trying to include me all the time is honestly frustrating and draining to me. Does that make me a horrible person? Probably. She has good intentions.

I haven't been able to schedule my first appointment yet and it's driving me nuts! I'm hoping they'll be able to get me in quickly once I'm back in town, because I've had some symptoms that worry me.

I didn't even know a babymoon was a thing until reading it on this board in a previous discussion. I think this is our unplanned babymoon in Italy. I don't think we'll be doing anything else before baby comes, which is fine with me. I'm a homebody.

That's awesome you already got them! I didn't think they are even for sale yet... Just a heads up there's a lotto you can register for through Cubs.com that's how I got my tickets last year... It's still open! They randomly pick each round!
  • @Cubslove12 we are all registered for the lotto and I've got my fx for those tickets because they will be less expensive than what DH bought. Then we could sell ours, maybe even for a profit. Good luck to you in the lotto and let's hope the boys can pull this off. DH and MIL went to the playoff game vs St Louis in Chicago last year and said it was awesome!! Unfortunately we will have to break the news about the LO to my MIL that weekend since she'll be coming with us and I won't be drinking...

  • I am 7 weeks today. I have had sharp pains which have caused me to go to the Dr already. I am also nauseous and don't sleep much. If anyone knows anything that helps with those things, please let me know. I also want to say congrats to all the mommies to be on here
  • @NurseK2016 I know I'm a little late but I plan on telling my mom on Skype <3 we live across the country from each other so it's the next best thing i have to actually seeing her in person. I think I'm gonna ask her if she can help me with a riddle (she loves riddles) and send it to her when we're talking. As for my big sister I plan on asking her opinion of an art piece I drew (something I often do because she is a more experienced artist)  and I will draw something that says she's going to be an aunty. I'm kinda cheesy but I love to make up surprises :D

Also I have a lot going on,  I'm going to have to tell my volleyball team soon,  looks like no more diving for me haha. But my biggest stress and concern right now is my house. My SO and I were going to move our manufactured home a few miles to a new spot (the spot we're in currently my cousin needs for farming/ranching equipment.)  But I am terrified the house is going to break apart upon the move,  it's a very old house and wasn't well when I purchased it. We we're hoping to build a new house and found the floor plan of our dreams but I'm worried about not being able to save for a house and for baby at the same time. I do not want to bring a baby into my current home,  it's old,  drafty, most likely molding and falling apart. I always joke that you he only thing holding up the house is a huge wasp nest in the walls... Not sure if that's not entirely true at this point -.-
  • Hi there, another first-timer!  Almost no symptoms except pretty heavy fatigue and sore boobs.  I told my husband it's like there's a hole in my body and 1/2 of my energy is literally leaking out all day.  I never once feel at 100% energy level!  Our first prenatal is on October 7th and we can't wait!

We've told parents so far and are planning on telling only our closest friends shortly.  I hate the idea of going it alone until 12 weeks.  If something goes awry I'd rather my best friends know so I can have the support!

The other night we had a brainstorming session with a giant whiteboard and wrote down everything that came to our minds that we have to do. The next day husband broke it all down by trimester and made a google doc spreadsheet so we can be organized! I am so grateful because I had so many to-do's swimming around in my head.  Been sleeping much better since got it all down in writing :)

Our biggest issue is that we live in Los Angeles where rents are sky-high.  We can't afford to move out of our 2 BR 1 Bath apartment!  A 3 BR is about $3,000/month right now.  So, we have to purge and really get creative with storage and shelving.  Our office will be the nursery.  Currently my closet is in our bedroom and husband's closet is the office closet. A lot of problem-solving ahead!
