owlet monitor?

Has anyone heard of the owlet monitor?? My biggest fear is SIDS. I get there are many things you can do to prevent it but I'm still so fearful.  My cousin's little one died from SIDS and she was doing everything right. I just know I'll be afraid to even sleep. I looked up any monitors avaliable and saw a new monitor called the owlet monitor. It monitors pulse ox and heart rate and sets off an alarm if the pulse ox reads under a certain number. Being a nurse i do 100% agree with this being the best and most accurate way to monitor breathing during someone's sleep.
When we are testing for sleep apnea in adults (basically when adults stop breathing in their sleep) we do this with pulse oximetry. So i like the idea of it. However am i going overboard on this fear by thinking of purchasing it? It's 200 some dollars. Part of me is like...that's crazy!! The other part of me is thinking it's totally worth it if it means i can sleep and rest assured that I'll be alerted if something is wrong (i do realize it doesnt prevent SIDS but will wake me if there is something). Anyone have experience with this or made this purchase? Am i being irrational?

  • I am interested to read people's responses! I actually registered for one over the weekend

  • The thing that makes me nervous with monitors like that is the false alarms that happen. I haven't read anything about this specific one, but the others I've read reviews online all have a significant percentage of false alarms reported. I feel like that would scare me more.

I've read on alot actually. Basically I've narrowed it down to snuza hero and owlet being the best. However being a nurse i feel the owlet is better and more reliable (just me. Not an expert review on them or anything so dont take my word on it). The reviews have very few false alarms. Things like the monitor sock not being on correctly, falling off etc will set it off but I'd prefer to he woken up for that anyway. I would rather have false alarms than no alarm going off if something did happen.
  • @KarliQ88 I have the same fear. I worked at a daycare before going to nursing school and I was around babies and kids all the time. I'm not really nervous about having a baby at home but SIDS scared me endlessly. I talked to my HB about the owlet and I think we will be purchasing one, even if just for piece of mind.

Right! I talked to my sister about it (12 years older and has 3 kids. I go to her with everything baby related). She said "it's not crazy. Even if it helps you to relax and sleep it's worth the money." I'm thinking I'm going to buy it. I would hate myself if something happened and i didn't have one and i would have always wondered "what if i would have spent that money?"
  • Haha sounds just like me. I'm terrified of bumpers for the crib and I feel like such a crazy lady when I ask my other friend who is pregnant about this kind of stuff. She doesn't seem to think about it at all. My mom and I did my registry together and she talked to me about mattress pads and what she used to do and I'm pretty sure I drove her insane because to everything she said my response had something to do with SIDS or suffocation. I was on the fence about bumpers until posting the question here and now I've completely decided against them, like you I felt like if something happened I would constantly wonder "what if".

Yay! I'm not the only crazy one. I said absolutely no to bumpers too. Everything i choose i think about SIDS.
  • I've been looking into the owlet too and also said no to bumpers.  My poor husband didn't realize how many common baby products could suffocate the baby until we were doing the registry.  He said he was never going to sleep again so like others have said we will probably get one just for our own piece of mind.

  • I can't believe 1. They sale crib bumpers with the current recommendations and 2. There are people who have babies that don't know this!

The owlet sounds amazing. Unfortunately I can't justify spending the money on one. The thing that comforts me is I sleep with baby right next to me in my room and with a new baby you never really deep sleep...at least I didn't with DS. I woke up constantly to check on him. I barely slept for months even if he didn't wake me up. But, if you can afford the device I say why not!
  • My cousin purchased one for her LO, they returned it shortly after, no sure if it was user error, but it was constantly giving them false alarms.

  • My son came home on an apnea monitor, due to being born premature. We would get a lot of false readings during the night due to the leads falling off. It was still nice to have it, since it gave us a piece of mind.  Since I'm not sure how far I will make it this pregnancy I was looking to get an Owlet monitor.

  • I have a son that was 29 weeks premature and turning blue on me to due reflux all the time (also has hydrocephalus).  I had to constantly stimulate him back and I never slept.  I tried to get doctors to get me a monitor and they refused.  It was beyond frustrating, even called his neonatologist and didnt get much help.  They all claimed it would worry me more and false alarms....uh apparently they have never had that sick of kid cause I guarantee I would have slept better with a monitor on him.  So yes, I believe monitors do help peace of mind.  I have not purchased one yet for this baby but I'm probably going to save up for one here soon.
  • We used the Angel Care movement monitor with DS. It was fantastic! We had an alarm the first night home, which scared the shit out of us, but I do think he stopped breathing for a moment and the alarm and us "shocked" or woke him up...if that makes sense. We used that monitor until he started to get up and out, so about 1 yo? Loved it and will use it again. Amazon has them pretty cheap, and even just as a plain ol' monitor it had amazing signal and reach.

I'm thinking of a Snuza just to use around the house. During the first weeks home, I rarely put DS in his crib to nap, he was in the living room with me either on the couch, floor or swing. So I'd like to have a portable monitor. The girls at work want to buy me something, so I guess that's what I'll tell them to get.

We used bumpers and DS was a tummy sleeper. All you can do is your best and buy equipment to help you with peace of mind.

  • We've registered for the angelcare movement monitor. I'd love an owlet or Snuza but with twins I just don't think I can swing the prices to start. I'll upgrade in a heartbeat though if the angelcare sets off too many alarms
  • I actually already own the snuza hero. This being my first i obviously havent put it to use yet. I put it on myself and took it off to stimulate a "not breathing" and it did exactly what it said it would. It's soft/very sensitive. The alarm i don't feel would wake me up at night though. It is one i could use around the house or as a portable one. I got it on clearance at target. Apparently it was bought and returned and had damage to the box but was never used (so it says). I talked with my husband about the owlet and he agrees. Looks like we will be making this purchase.
  • I had a terrible experience with my Snuza.  It sounded like a great idea, and it works as advertised.  But I became obsessed with watching it, waiting for it to go off, meaning I wasn't sleeping when the baby was.  I was staring at the lights on it.  When you're already sleep deprived, this is terrible.  Know yourself and contemplate whether this will make you more anxious than not.
  • I actually just received our Owlet monitor today.  I had a video monitor for my first baby and I still went in to check on her throughout the night because the video was too grainy to see her chest moving.  I haven't set it up or anything though because that seems too early, but the packaging was cute, the sock seemed like it would say on his foot, and the base station was a little larger than I thought it would be (but I was happy about that).
  • We had the Angelcare with our son.  I lent it to someone and never got it back, so I plan on buying a second one.  There was only one time where the alarm went off and he was not off the pad, but it worked perfectly in that case.

  • I registered for one too but if it doesn't get bought then I don't know if we will swing for it or not? Guess we'll have to see how much other stuff we need for the baby. And I'm sure that it never goes on sale either!
