Growth scan

Helloe ladies! So I had my anatomy scan yesterday and the ultrasound tech said that the scan was consistant with my due date. Anyways, today in the morning I get a call from the hospital saying I need to come back in 4 weeks for a growth scan. This is my 3rd baby and I have never had a growth scan before. Of course nobody would tell me anything. I see my Ob next week and I'm hoping for some more answers to why im
scheduled for this. Does anyone have any experience with this? I'm only 20 weeks. If the baby was small or big the scan wouldn't be consistant with my due date right? It makes me feel like it's more serious. So I'm totally freaking out right now..

Re: Growth scan

  • Can you call back and ask to speak with your OB? That's what I would try first, but I don't blame you for being freaked out.

FWIW, they told me that my son is measuring 1.5 weeks ahead of my due date, but that wasn't enough for them to consider changing it.

  • I would call your OB and ask for more information just for peace of mind.

  • They told me that my OB will have the results earliest on Monday next week:/
  • @MayaVill the results of what? You should call your OB and ask why a growth scan was ordered. Obviously it was done for a reason already so future results on something won't be needed to explain that to you.

My guess would be they couldn't visualize everything on the anatomy scan they needed to. A lot of women get a 4 week follow up scan. It doesn't mean there is a problem, maternal habitus or fetal position/movement may have prevented the tech from seeing/measuring everything  they needed to. But only your OB can tell you the reasoning.

  • I would love for that to be the case.
Honestly, they just did the scan and told me they will send the results to my OB office in 3 business days. They's what they have said in the past with my previous pregnancies and when I've seen my OB he just says everything looks normal. I might be able to reach my Ob on Saturdays when he has office hours but it's so hard to get him on the phone..
  • I had a growth scan with my first, some practices do them. The scan I had was at 30 weeks. I like scans, they give me piece of mind, but I would want to know the reasoning as well.
  • I'll have growth scans starting at 28 weeks, but mine are because during my previous pregnancy my son quit growing at 35 weeks and they didn't catch it. Your OBs office should definitely be able to tell you why another scan was ordered though.
  • I will have growth scans because my baby has a marginal cord insertion.  They will be checking to make sure he keeps growing because the off-center attachment of the cord could restrict nutrients.  Regardless of this, my OB likes to do a 3rd tri scan as long as insurance covers it so I would have had one more anyway.

I understand how hard the waiting game is - I'm so sorry you can't get answers for another couple of days.  Hopefully it's routine and nothing to be concerned about.  If you or LO had an urgent issue I am sure they wouldn't be sitting on the info doing nothing, so that might be of some comfort.

  • I have growth scans every 4 weeks, due to my bicornuate uterus, but my baby also measures very small for my due date. I hope that you get some kind of answer as to why they want you to get one, can you get information from the hospital as to why it was ordered?

  • I'm having growth scans as well due to having SUA. Single umbilical artery, baby only has one artery in the umbilical cord instead of two. He is measuring exactly on due date and where he should be, no signs of abnormalities either. They are doing just to make sure he keeps growing accordingly because there could be a chance he doesnt. However my OB doesn't think that will be my case but they want to keep an eye on him, then starting at 36 weeks I'll go in for NST testing. He told me it's becoming more common for some reason. They should have told you why. The sonographer was the one that told me after the anatomy scan was done.
  • Thank you guys, it's is reassuring that this isn't something that is ordered only when there's something terrible wrong. I'll find out tomorrow if they will give me any info on the phone.
  • I have a growth scan schedule for the 32nd week of my pregnancy.  My OB schedules is for everyone over 35 at time of delivery and since I'm not I wasn't expecting one, but the mfm Doctor came in after my AS and said that due to my thyroid condition they wanted me to come back at 32 weeks.  I'm excited to have another ultra sound and get another chance to see the baby before she's here.  Don't stress about it- could just be a new hospital policy that your doctor has no control over.

  • My growth scans start Saturday every 4 weeks until delivery. My OB said because the baby is measuring bigger than what they were expecting at this age. I see it as a precautionary measure. Plus I get to see the little guy more. Maybe the dr just wants to keep an eye out for predicting how big he/she will be.

  • I finally found out. I have a cyst on the blood vessel on the placenta so they wanna monitor it because it can cause bleeding either during pregnancy or delivery. My OB says it can go away, stay the same or grow so it needs to be monitored.
  • @MayaVill Glad you have some answers. It's too bad someone couldn't tell you that when they called about scheduling the growth scan and that you had to wait until this week to find out more.

  • @MayaVill Glad you were able to get your question answered!

  • My Ultrasound tech couldn't tell me about my issue with my cord either (he actually said everything looked great and was super - even overly - reassuring after my scan). But I had an MD appt not long after at which point the MD told me about it, and then we also have to get growth scans every 4 weeks.
  • My OB said that they won't be able to tell me anything when I go back again. They'll send him the report to his office and it can take 3-5 days. He said it's only if they see something terrible wrong that they won't let me leave until a dr evaluated the scan.
  • @MayaVill usually ultrasound techs cannot tell you anything really. But I am hoping that this cyst goes away for you! Just do not over think things because that will cause stress over something you cannot control. I believe everything will work itself out, and it's a good thing they caught it so they can monitor it!
