Trouble TTC

HSG pain and bloating

hi ladies
i went in for my HSG- oh em gee it hurt-  not only was the procedure painful but about 2 hours later I was having incredibly painful cramps...I went to work after the procedure thinking I'd be fine but I ended up having to leave early ....I've been laying down all day and the pain is mostly gone now- but I feel super bloated

we did find my left tube is blocked...not sure if that's why it hurt so much

Re: HSG pain and bloating

  • My HSG was also incredibly painful, but I have a narrow cervix and the OB couldn't get the catheter in. I didn't have any issues after the procedure, but I also didn't have any blockages. They said it was possible I would have some cramping or spotting after though. The main concern was if I started to bleed a lot.

when your uterus detects "foreign material" it tries to flush it out with bleeding and cramping.....maybe that's the cause of your symptoms?

  • Yikes.  I have not had that done (though it is still a possibility my doctor will decide to do it if I'm not pregnant in another couple of months).  I am sorry your in so much pain :( but glad you hopefully got some answers.

So what do they do then with the blocked tube?

  • So sorry you're in so much pain! My HSG was yesterday, and it also hurt so much! Unfortunately, I'm still cramping pretty bad today, but some Tylenol seems to be helping. Are you able to take anything?

I hope you feel better soon! ❤️

  • hoffmanr7 i'm not sure yet what her plan is with my blocked tube... since the right one is clear- as of yesterday she was waiting for my bloodwork to come back.. it came in today it looks like (or became available for me to see on their web portal) I will be meeting with her next week so she can go over everything and come up with a plan

i know sometimes they try to unblock it, which would be surgery- but not sure if she thinks that will be worth it

  • The HSG was terrible. I couldn't even finish the procedure it hurt so bad, so kudos to you for sticking it out. If this was a procedure a man had to have done, they would freaking put you to sleep. Take a Tylenol before hand they say. Psh. Ridiculous. A whole bottle of Tylenol wouldn't have numbed my pain.

  • @clt2pwm11 as much as I hate to hear it hurt, i don't feel as bad now hearing other women had the same experience .. I was practically crying during it .... last April i dislocated my shoulder and had to wait in the ER for 4.5 hours and it didn't hurt as bad as the HSG... i was googling the test afterward and read some women went back in for a second one and found their tubes were unblocked.... but I don't think I could do it again lol
