NIPT clear but high NT scan

Hey everyone,
went in today for the NT scan and to go over the NIPT results. NIPT came back clear (and a boy) but the NT scan was high at 3.44. I was so looking forward to coming home from this appointment with a clear direction on which way this pregnancy was going to go and now I'm feel just thrown back into limbo again. My OBGYN is sending me to a high risk doctor for further testing/scanning. She couldn't really tell me about what could be wrong (if anything) if not Tri13/18/21, she said the high risk doctor would be able to go over what could cause the high NT messurment. She mentioned maybe some type of heart issue. I've only been googling for a couple hours and I'm just not coming across any useful info. Has anyone been in or know of someone who had these type of testing results? If not one of the tri issues, what could it be? Thanks.

Re: NIPT clear but high NT scan

  • I don't have any experience but want to offer you creepy internet hugs.  These "limbo" type situations are the worst.  Sending prayers that all is going to be OK with your LO.

  • I also don't have any experience but I'm so sorry you're still in limbo. I'm glad that your OB didn't just leave it at the test results though and is referring you to a high-risk doctor. They should have a lot more expertise in conflicting screening results, and their testing will hopefully bring clearer results. I do know that sometimes a high NT might mean nothing though, especially if all screening comes back normal. Keeping you in my thoughts and hoping you're pulled out of limbo with good news really soon.
  • I'm so sorry about the worry that you're going through. I now despise the NT scan after the crap that I went through and after reading tons of stories of other women who worried for no reason. If your NIPT results came back low risk for chromosomal issues, then the high NT measurement could really be nothing. Some doctors don't even worry about it unless it's over 3.5mm. Obviously you're on the higher end, but that doesn't automatically mean there's an issue. Obviously I'm not an OB, but after doing a shit ton of research after the Down Syndrome scare, I've come to understand that sometimes the baby just has a thicker measurement and that's all there is to it. Sometimes it could also mean there's a heart issue, which can be ruled out after you see the specialist who'll more than likely do a level 2 US. Either way, I'll say a prayer for you and I hope you can rest easy soon.
  • Thanks all. It's just gonna be one of those annoying extra things to stress over until I see that high risk doc, and even then I'm sure there won't be any solid answers.
  • If it's any consolation, I feel like I have seen a thousand of these posts where the NT measurement was in the 3-4 range and everything was completely fine. I would try to let yourself take some comfort in the normal NIPT results, and hope for the best. I know that's much easier said than done, and if it were me I know I would worry until I knew for sure as well. I hope you get reassuring news from the high-risk doctor ASAP so you can relax!

  • My doctor doesn't even recommend the NT anymore if blood tests are an option. Sounds like it could be nothing.

  • @kellyT22 considering I was having the NIPT I was really surprised this OBGYN still said we would have an NT scan. But I really didn't think it was going to do any harm, I was certainly wrong. Maybe they offered it because I'm high risk? I dunno. I did find some info saying that there's still a 93% chance everything will be totally fine.

Thinking about you @Bok Bagok!  Hopeful that the high risk doc gets you in quickly.  And 93% odds are still really really good odds!

  • Is the NIPT test like harmony? I'd push for a chromosomal blood test to try to ease your mind fast. Seems like insurance would cover it if you had an atypical scan. I am so sorry! I have two good friends who went through this scare and their babies are perfectly healthy and happy and the didn't have any abnormalities except for terrified mothers....
  • @peony2418 thanks for thinking of me . My OBGYN called this afternoon just to let me know they contacted the high risk doc. So now I just have to wait for the high risk to call and schedule me. Ive seen them before when I was pregnant with my daughter and I was really happy with them. I keep reminding myself over and over about that 93% :)
  • @mauiquickie yup NIPT is the same as harmony, which is why the high NT scan really threw me off. Im just staying calm and waiting :)
  • High risk office just called, they are going to see me tomorrow afternoon. That call just made me feel really nervous! Atleast maybe I'll get an answer.
  • Excellent! Glad they didn't make you wait and sweat it out. I hope you can rest easy after your appointment tomorrow.
  • @Bok Bagok Glad you'll be seen soon!! Relax as best as you can until then.
  • Glad you are getting in soon!

  • Overall appointment went well. NT measured smaller @2.7 but the doctor still considered it abnormal. I knew from previous testing with a fertility specialist that I have a chromosome issue that could cause early miscarriage  (I've had two) and very rarely abnormal live births. This doctor showed some concern over it and so we have decided to do an amino when I hit 16 weeks and a target scan a few weeks after that. He gave me a 90% chance of having a normal healthy baby. He was really great, experienced, thorough and I feel taken care of. Even though I'm still concerned, I feel better having this doctor and a plan in place that I feel comfortable with. Thanks everyone for the well wishes, I'll be sure to update anytime I get news :)
  • I like 90% odds a lot!  That's fantastic news!  And great that you like the doctor and feel comfortable with what's going on.

  • 90% is an A, so let's go with that!
  • Glad you're in good hands! I also really like the 90% odds; they're definitely in your favor!
  • Sounds like there's a great chance that your little boy is just fine. Sorry you're going through this, it helps to have a good doc on your side.
