Low hCG Level at 5 Weeks

My doctor's office just called to let me know that the blood test they did yesterday showed an hCG level of only 276. They said that is low for five weeks and that I need to go in next week for another blood test. This is the first time I have been pregnant and am sooo nervous. The nurse I spoke with said that it could just be early and not to worry until after the next blood draw, but I can't help but worry!

    Try to not stress. While it's on the lower end it still fits into the norm for 5 weeks. 


    The average levels of hCG in a pregnant woman’s blood are:

    • non-pregnant women - less than 5 milli-international units per millilitre (mIU/ml)
    • pregnant women, about 3 weeks after the last menstrual period (LMP) - 5–50 mIU/ml
    • pregnant women, about 4 weeks after the LMP - 50–500 mIU/ml
    • pregnant women, about 5 weeks after the LMP - 100–10,000 mIU/ml
    • pregnant women, about 6 weeks after the LMP - 1080–30,000 mIU/ml
    • pregnant women, about 8–10 weeks after the LMP - 3500–115,000 mIU/ml
    • pregnant women, about 14 weeks after the LMP - 12,000–270,000 mIU/ml
    • pregnant women, about 15–18 weeks after the LMP - up to 200,000 mIU/ml

    I hate it when nurses share their opinions like that. They need to butt out and let the OBs determine how things are progressing. Dont worry about the first number, its the second you care more about. The number should double every 48 to 72 hours. Hang in there, I'll be okay!

    That's awesome! I know how stressful waiting to find out whether things are going to take a turn for the better or worse can be. It's one of the worst feelings. Congrats!
