AW: I'm sick. What can I take??

Yesterday I woke up with a sore throat. It bothered me all day, but I dealt with it. While I was sleeping, it settled into my chest. My chest is so tight, it hurts to take a deep breath. I have an inhaler, but IDK if I can use it?? Anyone have experience with that? If doctor says no inhaler, I may have to go to the ER for a breathing treatment.

STM+: I'm brainfarting as to what is safe to take! Tylenol cold products, yes? Mucinex?

I have asthma and I can take my inhaler as needed. My brand/type is class C but since the benefits outweigh the risks my doctor has given me the go-ahead.
In an asthma attack, if I'm not getting the proper amount of oxygen, that means the baby isn't either. That said though, I don't know if it's the same for a cold. I honestly would ask your doctor personally about the inhaler. I don't know anything about the other products but Google should be able to at least tell you what the guidelines are

eta. I hope you feel better soon and find some relief

  • Like pp said, your best bet is to ask your dr. sometimes the benefits do outweigh the risks. That being said, I'm doing some of my NP clinical rotations at a women's health clinic and this is what they generally tell our pregnant patients. I want to stress that definitely ask your Dr first bc I'm really not qualified to be giving actual medical advice and I obviously don't know your history.

You want to avoid liquid combo meds because some of them have alcohol in them. Get single meds rather than combo meds so that you can take the least amount of medicine you can.

Hot tea with lemon and honey may really help your throat more than any meds.
Mucinex is generally considered safe, Tylenol yes and no ibuprofen. I would avoid Sudafed. As far as your inhaler, your breathing is most important but I would minimize your use of it as much as you can. A breathing treatment in the ER is going to have albuterol in it along with other drugs so that's not a very good alternative.

Fluids fluids fluids and rest. Feel better!!
  • To go off of @shadeofgreen816 and her tea recommendation. While boiling some water for tea, throw in a little peeled/grated ginger. The more you can tolerate, the better IMO. After, pour into a cup and you can add the tea bag, honey, lemon and/or cinnamon. I find it really helps with the effects of the cold/flu.

  • Have you ever used essential oils? I love the peppermint oil when I am sick or have a headache. You could mix a few drops with coconut oil and rub on your chest. It may make breathing easier.  I bought a premade organic baby version for my LO and he seems to like it when he is sick.

I've never tried them. But I am allergic to coconut, so coconut oil is a no-go for me :( but you can use other "carrier" oils, yes? My BIL's sister sells oils. Maybe I'll talk to her
  • Be careful with EOs and make sure you're getting high quality ones and I'm not sure I would ingest any. But some peppermint on your chest would be a great idea!!
  • Yes definitely don't ingest them. Whenever I have a headache I rub a little on my temples and on my forehead, it feels so nice and cooling. I also used it last time around when I had pregnancy nausea and it does help but just temporarily. Always make sure you wash your hands after too. Once I rubbed my eyes and it was burning badly.
  • Regarding the inhaler, it's best to call and ask your OB. As for other medications, I really have no clue. I remember when I started TTC with my first and didn't have a period for awhile, I was super cautious. I ended up asking a pharmacist at a store and she was very helpful with tips on what was safe or not safe.

  • I got sick last week with major sinus issues - nose, throat, the works! I finally took my temperature Saturday morning and it was 101.2, so I headed to the Dr! I am on an antibiotic now, but before that I was taking Benadryl at night to try to help dry me up a little (and so I could get some good sleep!).

I second what several pp's have said about using high quality oils only! I think it's a personal choice whether to ingest them or not. Lemon and Thieves (I think OnGuard is the DoTerra version) are great for sore throat. You could gargle them in warm water and get some benefit that way. I know this isn't the case for most people in the group, but if you are still breastfeeding, peppermint has the potential to decrease your milk supply.
  • Inhaler should be fine. I got a bad cough that felt more like bronchitis a couple of weeks ago, what helped me was tea with honey and I would chop up a clove of garlic and swallow it with my tea. Garlic has anti inflammation properties.
