Weight gain or loss?

So I'm approaching 8 weeks and all I've done is lost 4 pounds. This is my first, so I don't know what to expect. Anyone else just losing weight?

Re: Weight gain or loss?

  • I think it depends on multiple factors such your starting weight, changes in diet since finding out you,re pregnant, morning sickness. I personally already gained a couple lbs but I think its water weight since I'm so bloated

  • I've read that women can lose weight early due to nausea and not being able to keep food down. My weight fluctuates about 10 lbs when I weigh myself (which is infrequent. I don't own a scale). At my Dr's this week I was still in that range (even though I'm bloated). I'm curious to see how it will change at each appointment. This is also my first and I have no idea what I'm doing.
  • I usually lose a few lbs in the 1st trimester and then more than gain it back in the next 2.

  • What PP's said. I've lost a few pounds but I've been nauseous & vomiting. With my prior pregnancy I only gained 13 pounds thru week 36 bc of how sick I was.
  • last time I lost weight in the beginning.. I still ended up gaining 55 by the time I delivered.
  • Last time I was pretty nauseous the whole time and ended up only gaining about 3 lbs (after losing 15 the first two trimesters). Walked out after delivery weighing less than when I got pregnant. I quickly gained it all back plus some over the next year.  So far this time I'm not nauseous so I'm expecting to gain. ESpecially with the bloat I'm feeling

  • Depends on your starting weight and other factors. I could lose 30 lbs to begin with so I've lost a few and plan to try to gain only 20 if that. It's so much harder on your body to gain a ton. I gained 60 with my first and 50 with my second. This time I'm trying to stay very active and nausea is keeping me from overeating.

  • I refuse to weigh myself this pregnancy with the exceptions being OB appointments.  I gained 80lbs with my twins and I was still not intaking enough calories for my littles until I was placed on a fancy high calorie diet that I gained another almost 20lbs during the last 2 weeks.

Moral of the story, don't stress about your weight in pregnancy.  Your medical team will give you the best guidance on your diet.

  • I've not lost or gained so far. I am constantly nauseated but I've yet to have actual morning sickness so I never lose during first tri. It's pretty normal to lose during first tri... 4 lbs seem reasonable and not like too much at this point.

  • With my first I lost 10 lbs between 8 and 12 weeks
  • Thanks everyone. I appreciate the feedback. I've yet to have nausea or morning sickness kick in, but I'm kind of hoping to skip that part
  • I gained way to much with my first, and still have lots to loose. So I am hoping not to gain that much this time.

  • I'm overweight, so I'm actually not supposed to gain at all. I'm actually encouraged to lose weight, usually 5-10 lbs. with my first, I lost 60. My second, 45. Both babies were more than healthy. I've been just kind of eating whatever sounds good. But I really need to buckle down and start eating much better. My current doctor doesn't scold me for weight gain, which is nice. My doctor with my first, agonized over ounces. It was dumb.
  • With my first my weight stayed around the same until somewhere in the middle of the 2nd trimester where I started gaining. My doctor wasn't worried about it, and my son was both big and healthy.
  • Don't worry about your weight unless your OB says to.  I lost 12 lbs in my first tri.  By the end of my pregnancy I only ended up gaining 10 lbs over my pre-pregnancy weight. My son was born at 39wks 5days 6lbs 10oz perfectly healthy. My docs were never once worried about my weight.  I actually ended up gaining 30lbs after he was born!!! Weight is just a number whether it is more or less.

  • I appreciate it. I'll be 8 weeks Wednesday and officially down 10 lbs now. I'll let my doctor know when I see her next week, but won't sweat it in the meantime.
