Bengkung Belly Binding

I know its a little early to be thinking about after the baby comes, but since I started doing some research on the topic i figured why not..

Any STM+ moms done this in the past? Anyone thinking about doing it this time around?  I did not do this first time around because I didn't know about it. I'm really interested in doing it this go round.

for those that don't know what it is:
Bengkung is a traditional Malaysian belly binding method. Essentially it is a practice of tying a long strip of cloth around the abdomen during the postpartum recovery period to ensure a strong support to our womb after childbirth

Re: Bengkung Belly Binding

  • This sounds similar to the belly band thing. I've heard that it helps those who are recovering from c-sections because of the extra support. I never tried anything though because I did not want to be constricted.

  • I used an abdominal support wrap after my first but didn't notice much difference. It did help me sit with better posture. I didn't use it for long.
  • I'll definitely be trying this, if not something similar.  I didn't the first time around and my c-section flap took forever to minimize.  I was too lazy and didn't care.  This time however, i'll be turning 35 and I'll want to look like a hot momma of 2!
  • I've read that you can't do this binding until about 4-6 weeks after c section: so I'll wear the binder they give you until I can do this. I like this because it goes higher and lower than traditional belly bands

  • This sounds like a tradition in Mexico, women will typically wear it for 40 days. My mom did it for all of her 5 kids. I used the hospital belly band because it was free. I must say it helped keep everything stay tight. I plan on using it again with #2.

  • I used a belly support band after my c section. It was the only way I could walk around for the first few days because I felt like my intestines we're going to fall out of my body. I stopped after a few days so don't know that it does anything for recovering your pre baby shape/body.
  • I didn't have a c-section but I had that problem where your muscles separate (can't remember what it's called).  I have definitely thought about something like this.  I hated post partum recovery much more than being pregnant - anything to reduce the time spent getting back to normal, I'm all about!

Keep us posted with anything more you find out?

  • I'm interested in this. I'm also going to try using a woven wrap as belly support when it starts getting big and heavy.
  • I loved y belly bandit. I guess it's more of a westernized binding... It really helps with stability while all your core muscles are weakened.

  • I haven't given much thought into what I'll do, pending if I have a natural birth or C-section but my Chinese mom swore by girdles after her pregnancy and they def. did her justice! @nurselala I did see the bellybandit recently and it sparked my interest. Have you used it?

  • I did this with my son. It was so supportive after my C section and the wrap itself was beautiful.
  • @Mama0728 how long did you wait after your c section before binding?

  • I was really sore and tender around my incision for awhile so I Waited until things felt better. I think my girlfriend did my first bind around 5 weeks postpartum? But I wish I had been able to start sooner. I had a very rough recovery.
