28 weeks and horrible anxiety - anyone on meds?

Hello everyone,

I have always battled with OCD and anxiety. I normally take anxi meds...zoloft when I am not pregnant. I obsess and ruminate about stuff and make myself miserable. I was able to come off of meds with 1st pregnancy and was fine until after baby was born.

I am now 28 weeks and struggling. Really having a hard time. I am wondering if any of you are taking anxiety meds or have so in previous pregnancies. Did your kids have any ill effects?

I really dont want to take meds but I dont know if I can make it 12 more weeks.

Thanks

  • I'm a ftm in the same boat! I'm always trying to figure out if it's time to go back on or not. My doctor seems to feel very strongly that we are far enough along that there should be no ill effects towards baby. I'm not a doctor by any means, and I don't have experience myself, but know you are not alone in this! For sure talk with your doctor!

  • So the third trimester actually carries the highest risk per the most recent data and is actually safest in first trimester, contrary to what you would think

  • However, the risks and benefits should be weighed on an individual basis with each patient and their doctor. Benadryl is fairly safe in low doses on an as needed basis. However, it's not going to help the overall rumination, just acute anxiety.

I'm a psychiatrist, but I encourage you to talk to your doctor.
  • I am a FTM and began having panic attacks nightly in my 2nd trimester. The tiniest things would set them off. I told my Dr and she put me on a low dose of zoloft, and I haven't panicked since. You're doing your baby a disservice if you don't treat yourself. All of that stress and possible breathing issues or anything like that can directly cross over to baby. I'm glad I started it, because it definitely takes the edge off.
  • I suffer with bi polar depression and I'm normally on an antidepressant combined with a mood stabilizer unfortunately the meds I was on are not pregnancy safe and Zoloft doesn't work for me so I don't have any options unless I want to put my baby at risk. That being said if it's a point of being able to make it through the day or not then take the meds most likely you will be put on a low dose! And if that's something that you don't think you can do ask your dr about classes or therapy you can do in the meantime. Hope you feel better!
  • Thanks @angelz429, that's good to know! I do seem to remember her saying that Zoloft has higher risk than some of the other options.
  • Zoloft is actually the ssri most preferred in pregnancy and post partum, less goes into breast milk.

@Muscatmommyof4 have you looked at latuda?

again, these are all things I discuss with my patients and we make the decision that's best for them. I have quite a few patients on Zoloft during pregnancy because the benefits outweigh the risks. Again, I'm providing generalized information, but everything is person/case specific and should be discussed with your provider  :)
  • @jeneseso .. How much do you take?

i am really trying not to take anything but I am not functioning well
  • @kjoseph81 I take 25mg. Just enough if you ask me. My husband has bipolar II and he takes zoloft, Lamictal, AND seroquel lol...I'm glad I don't need that much!
  • @angelz429 yes for some reason that and Zoloft actually make my depression a lot worse so my doctors are trying to come up with something for after delivery. But I do DPT classes 2x a week and see my physiatrist every couple weeks plus I have a very understanding DH which helps a lot.
  • I did take Zoloft daily and Xanax as needed with my first pregnancy, 12 years ago. I had a severe anxiety disorder that kept me from getting outside the house. I know the recommendations have probably changed since then, but my daughter did turn out ok.
  • I was having nightly panic attacks and my doctor put me on hydroxyzine, which is a sedative so I can only take it at night. But it has worked wonders for my anxiety at night. Usually I'm able to work through the anxiety during the day but at night it's the worst.
  • Hydroxyzine can be taken in as low of doses as 10mg and can be used during the day if not too sedating at low doses for you!
  • A little late to this party but wanted to reassure you- zoloft is perfectly fine. I've been on 100mg my entire pregnancy, and we are talking about upping it towards the end to help me with postpartum depression (I'm not depressed now, but have anxiety about becoming depressed). I had a small window where I hadn't refilled my rx (like 3 days no pills) and flew off the handle-- tears non-stop, yelling, hating my husband, etc. My doctor says that you just have to look at the big picture. If you are not healthy, your baby is not healthy. If you are anxious it can cause your baby to be in distress (I had to get hooked up to a monitor because she stopped moving during the short time I was off pills). Do what is best for you! Happy healthy mama = happy healthy baby!

    Agree 100% ^
  • I've been taking Zoloft since before I was pregnant. It was a huge concern of mine and my doctor told me it's better for baby if I'm healthy then if I'm struggling with mental health and anxiety. Definitely talk to your doctor!
  • I guess I'm pretty late here, but I wanted to give some input! I was on celexa before I got pregnant, after I found out I was my OB and I agreed to get me off it and I was seeing a therapist to help with the anxiety and depression. Everything was okay for awhile, but then the anxiety and depression got so bad I couldn't handle it anymore, and I was so scared of going back on the medication because I didn't want to hurt the baby. I talked to my OB about it and she explained that I was now in a safer time in the pregnancy to be taking it again and the only real concern would be possible withdrawals for a short time when the baby is born. She helped me realize that it was much more important that I be mentally stable, and that the side effects are minimal enough that I definitely shouldn't be suffering the way I was. I don't regret going back on the medication, it has helped so much! Everyday off of it was such a constant battle with myself, I hated myself, I was terrified of my little girl having the same problems as me, and I was causing such a struggle in my marriage. It's been 110% better now, of course I still have days where I struggle, but they're not anywhere near as bad and they're not nearly as common. If you haven't, I would definitely suggest talking to your doctor!
  • Thank you so much. Do you remember how long it took for you to feel better after you started?
