Not walking or talking by one

I know every baby is different but I'm just wondering who's in the same boat as me. LO will be 1 at the end of the month and she isn't talking yet and I'm pretty sure she won't be walking by her birthday either, if she does I'll be very surprised!! She does say Da Da but I think she thinks it means shirt from my husband always pointing at his chest lol. She also knows a couple signs. I just wish she knew mama and dada!!!

Re: Not walking or talking by one

  • She says some words but no walking or standing unassisted yet at almost 13 months. Just saw the pediatrician yesterday and she said she's not worried in the slightest. She said if you have a one year old that's not at all mobile---no crawling or pulling up---then she'd be concerned. Otherwise, babies go at their own pace.

  • Dont stress it. By the age of 1 she should know how to say atleast 2 words, but not necessarily the full meaning. And they have until theyre 15-18 months to walk before docs worry.

& you never know, you still have 2 weeks. Theres still a chance she might walk by her 1st bday. DD started walking on her 1st bday & it was a total surprise. I was hoping the boys would on their 1st bday also but it didnt happen. They will be 1 & 2 weeks this Saturday. & barely yesterday they started letting go of things & balancing on their own.

By any chance is she copying noises she hears? Thats a good sign too. The boys started saying "bleh" because they heard Mavis say "bleh bleh bleh" on hotel transylvania. & theyve been trying to sing "ba ba ba". From the minions movie (yes they watch movies) & when DD yells or cries they mock her(which i think is funny).

I think your little princess is fine. Trust me, once she starts saying mom you'll wish she never learned how to say it. (mom mom mom mommy mommy mom mom) lol when she walks youre gonna be so exhausted being after her. Enjoy the little peace you have now because it shall be over soon lol.
  • At his one year check up I asked the doctor about the words since LO isn't saying anything but babbles which the doctor said is fine. He also wasn't at all concerned that he isn't walking. He makes many sounds, crawls, pulls himself up, will walk holding my hands so nothing to worry about.

  • My little guy just turned 1 on Sunday. He just started walking a little over a week ago. Out of nowhere. He took 4 steps one time unassisted. That was it for weeks and then bam, one night, he walked across the room. He shocked us all.

He doesn't say but dada and mama consistently and not with meaning.
  • We're almost at 13 months here and no walking yet, but she does take a few steps on her own. And the only word she says is mama, but she babbles a lot. Her ped and occupational therapist said that the most important thing is that she's mobile and babbling. The OC had us make a little book with 4 pictures that we could use to really concentrate on those 4 words and teach her the sigs for them. She also has us hold up little animal figures next to our mouth and say what they our so DD is watching what our mouths do. And we also will hold two animals up and ask, "where's the cow?" for instance. Sounds like your girl is right where she should be.
  • Our son turned one today (still so hard to believe!).  He started walking early at 10 months, so he's been crazy with that the last two months.  As far as talking though he used to say "dada," rarely will say it now, and he does say "mama" pretty regularly, but I don't think he makes the connection between the word and me.  He babbles and makes lots of noises, but that's it.  He still won't really clap or wave for us either!  But, he'll run around the house all day long and get into everything!  Think each kiddo is at their own pace.
  • I was very concerned a month ago since we weren't crawling at 1 year old. I am very happy now with just her learning how to cruise around furniture...it's a bit exhausting because she never wants to sit down now lol. Are they supposed to be talking already? She tries to copy some words but she is quite far from saying proper words.
  • To add...she sings and babbles all day long, have no idea what she is saying but she is a little loud lol

Noah was fully walking at 10 months but he doesn't know many words at all. His best friend is 17 days older then him and he can use words correctly and knows SO many. That child has 2 older siblings though and I think that plays a huge roll in his learning development. Every child is different, don't stress yourself
  • LO will be 13 months on the 29th and no walking yet. She does talk, sign and babble quite a bit, but i just think every baby is different. They say 9-15 months is the "norm" for walking, so i'm not really concerned at all. Boy does she find ways to get around though lol. Lawd that child is into everything lol.
  • 12 months old here and thank goodness he's not walking yet!! I'm not ready for that. He's already an expert climber, and it's terrifying. I have had to remove so much furniture because he moves it to where he wants it, then climbs up on stuff. I wouldn't really say he's talking but he says 5 or 6 words randomly, all day long!! He never stops talking and singing and babbling. He's getting a lot more brave and letting go when he's standing up but I still think we are weeks away. He's the first born and I know when they have older siblings it can help accelerate milestones.
  • DD is 1 year old tomorrow and doesn't walk unassisted yet but I feel like it's coming any day now. I'm definitely not ready for it!! She has a new fun trick she likes to do - climbing the stairs!!!! UGH!!!!

She says Dada and Mama and then randomly blurts out things that are completely clear but she rarely, if ever, repeats them. One day I handed her a sippy cup and I swear she said "Drink It". Never again though so my husband thinks I'm insane. She also says "Love You" sporadically (probably because I say it 9000 times a day to her). She said "Brother" one day (I have witnesses) but we haven't heard it again since. I secretly think she has some crazy vocabulary that she's hiding from us!!!

There are babies younger than her in her classroom at day care that walk around perfectly fine but are super quiet... they just all develop so differently!!!
  • There is a huge range of normal for speech! LO had more words at 9 months (Mama, Dadadad, Hi, Bye, What, all in correct use) than a 15mo I care for (he only said 'hi' and 'ya', not even mama, until 17mo)-both are normal. LO is working on a couple more words now (anana, for banana, nuss, for nurse-as in breastfeeding), but doesn't walk. She can take steps along furniture, but hasn't shown any interest in trying to go into the room. She turned one on Monday, and only started standing a lot at 10.5mo, she still falls every few steps when using rolling toys like a doll stroller or cart to walk with.

  • My first child didn't walk until he was 17 months. The doctor had said that she would be concerned if he wasn't walking by 18 months. He always was/is very talkative.

My second walked a few months sooner, but didn't really speak much; I don't think he put two words together before 2.

This little girl is on the verge of walking at one year, and says up to three words together ("I love you"). My point being that all kids are different & there's a wide range in which to hit those milestones. If your pediatrician isn't concerned, I wouldn't be either!
  • I'm not concerned at all, I was just wondering what others experiences were like and who's were similar to mine! LO is showing progress in her physical abilities every day as well as her communications skills. I'm honestly happy she's not walking yet because it makes things a little easier but at the same time I was kind of hoping for an early walker just because it's exciting when they hit their milestones, and even more exciting when they hit them early.

We are walking on our own but not for super long distances. Like one end of the hall to the other is where we max out right now. And no talking yet. Mama and dad for sure and Bubba. But nothing else. He will make noises all day like he's talking. But no full words yet.
  • My baby only says dog. Everything is dog! Sometimes he says mama, but mostly just dog. But he babbles plenty so I'm not worried. And don't worry about the walking, some babies don't walk until they are a few months past one. Just think of how much more relaxing it is for you now.
  • I was thinking as far as milestones, walking is one that I am not looking forward to at all. I mean I am but I am not. I feel like he is growing up way too quick! I have noticed the last few days his balance is getting better and better so he will be running and gunning before long.
