Baby Moon!

Hi ladies,

I've naturally got the travel bug in me so I'm already brainstorming places I could go for our babymoon. I live in the NJ/NY area and since we'll be due in April... it'll be winter by the time we're in our third trimester! With that being said... I'm voting the Caribbean out as well. No Zika scares for me. :P

We are more of a sightseeing, adventurous couple (think walking tours, not sky diving) and I would like to stay within a (4) hour radius, maybe? I love a good spa but don't think I can spa an entire weekend. Any reccos ladies?

I would also love to hear what you're planning for your babymoons. Bring it on!

Re: Baby Moon!

  • Can't think of too many great places to sightsee within 4 hours of NJ in the winter...Unless by 4 hours you mean flying. If you haven't been to Charleston, SC, it's a beautiful city that's great for sightseeing and walking around. So much good food! It won't be warm there in the winter, but it should be bearable (high of 55-60). Savannah, GA, is supposed to be great as well.

We're going to visit Austin in November (staying with friends). I don't know if that counts as a babymoon but will probably be our last non-family related baby-free trip.

  • I've been thinking that I need a vacation badly and a baby moon is a great excuse. I'm in Northern California. I'm thinking of visiting Seattle. I love it there.

Def love both cities!! I guess since it'll be winter, I was thinking it would be better to be somewhere drivable. I'll need to ask my dr. if there's any concerns with flying in third tri! I love Ausitin, you'll have a blast!

Im actually headed to Seattle next month to visit friends. It'll be my first time and baby's first visit. I'm stoked! Been on my bucket list for awhile and I'll be able to move around a little more!

  • @punkita51 @beemaya83 Seattle has so many tourist friendly stuff to do. Definitely look into getting a City Pass, it's a great deal and includes the aquarium, space needle, Argosy cruise, EMP or zoo, the science center or Chihuly garden and glass. The weather isn't the greatest most of the year, but many of the things I listed are inside. If you come around Christmas, the Bellevue Mall makes it snow every night and has a fun little parade.

We have a wedding to attend in February for DHs uncle in Arizona. I think it will be fun but absolutely not looking forward to the 21 hour drive.

ETA (because it cut off half of my post) We never had a honeymoon so this should be super fun for us because there's no kids allowed at the wedding! I will be totally freaked out being so far away from my 3 babes though. We are hoping to do some hiking/sightseeing while we're there! Anyone from Arizona here that has any suggestions around the Scottsdale area?!
  • We're going to Maui (from LAX) at the end of next month for a friend's wedding, so that may double as a baby moon for us.  Otherwise, we've never been to Montreal, so I think that'd be fun, though cold and DH doesn't get much time off (and we have to travel to both of our families for the holidays).  But travel during second tri seems like it'd be more comfortable (FTM so just going off of what I hear).

  • Since it will be winter I am not so sure we will. Also, I'm in @mrsstuessy's boat. Babies are expensive. So we might go somewhere in driving distance and explore. The only interesting cities in short driving distance are St. Louis and Omaha. We might do one of those. But there's not a lot to do in either place in the winter.
  • For DS1 we took a babymoon to new Orleans, and after he was weaned we went to Alaska for a week while family watched him and we finally had time to work on LO2 lol!. If you can manage it definitely go for it! We are thinking about taking some family weekend trips to Austin or San Antonio and also traveling for the holidays but it'll be a while before we can manage a trip without the kiddos again... And then cruises to the Caribbean are definitely on order.

  • We are in the same boat and also are living in NY/NJ - we are thinking of doing a cruise and given Zika concerns it could be a cruise to nowhere (Disney maybe) or perhaps if you can take a while off to Europe :)
  • @Knottie1943785 there isn't a zika concern in Central Florida. I wouldn't go to Miami, but Disney is totally fine :) i'm actually going to Disney Sunday

  • We will be going to the UK for our baby moon. We are actually eloping in Scotland, but in the middle of the craziness of planning, I had gotten pregnant. So it will be destination elopement, honeymoon and baby moon rolled into one. When we get back it will be a long long time before we take another big trip.
  • I'm not sure we can swing it with timing, since we're already taking a week off for holidays.  Just bad timing, come Jan/Feb it's too late and we can't get away from work til Xmas! :(
  • We might sneak away to Banff over New Years. It's about 4.5 hours away so won't be too bad for an extended long weekend. DH isn't sold, since we won't be able to hit the slopes but I'll be perfectly content to eat bear paws and sip on hot chocolate...
  • @allybadry I am dying to go to Banff!  It is a far drive for us, so we are waiting until DS (and now this baby) are older and we can do a bigger trip.  Maybe a train through the Canadian Rockies or do Banff and Yellowstone together while renting an RV or something.

With DS we took a great Babymoon to Vancouver, Seattle, and Portland.  It was amazing, but a little rough to be in such craft beer greatness while pregnant!

Not sure if we will do anything this time around.  We just took a big vacation this past summer and drove around Lake Superior, stopping at some amazing places along the way, but it was a long trip.  So if we do anything before this baby I think it will have to be pretty close, maybe just a long family weekend or something.  It's hard because I am a teacher, so I don't get vacation time during the school year, but I highly doubt we will take a vacation next year...I can't really imagine anyone getting any sleep if we have a toddler and a newborn in the same hotel room.  But I always have the travel bug.  I just can't imagine waiting until the summer of 2018 to travel!
  • Thank you all for your contributing posts! I love hearing about people's travels adventures!

@harter5512, I'm so jealous you're going to Thailand!!! It's been on a dream of mine but I haven't gotten there yet and now it'll be awhile before I get to go!
@knottie1943785, I'm considering Orlando too since it'll be warmer than our area during that time, I'm going to ask the Dr. at my next appointment. Like @beachmommy2b said, there's been no cases outside of Miami! @chelle087, I'm so bummed I'll have to sit out on the craft beer in Seattle, but I'll still go visit the breweries with the hubby and drink some ginger ale ;]
@allybadry, the pics of Banff look UNREAL!

  • @allybadry Banff is a major bucket list item for me. My parents went a few years ago and I looooooved seeing all their pictures.

@punkita51 LOVE Seattle! It's tough with all that delicious craft beer though; be sure to treat yourself to something equally yummy!  :)

I am going to Chicago with DH when he has a music conference in December.  Just booked my tickets on Wednesday (his airfare, hotel and meals are paid).  Not really a vacation/"babymoon" for him, but I'm looking forward to the snowy weather and allllllllll the food.

  • @mrsstuessy & @HGRich

Same here.  We're trying to save up for when I take maternity leave and we'll probably go somewhere within driving distance like the San Antonio riverwalk.  Its really pretty during Christmas time with all the lights and trees lit up.
  • We might do a week vacation early December in Colorado. My sister moved there in March and I really want to experience a real winter wonderland, I grew up in Southern California most of my life . . . I won't get to snowboard this year but I'm sure I can figure out some pregnant safe activities.
  • @Dax28 I live in CO and there are a ton of safe winter activities you can do while pregnant! Snowshoeing is awesome and is my personal favorite. Another is cross country skiing, lots of ski resorts have cross country trails in addition to downhill trails.

  • We're taking our girls to Disney in the fall, I love it there so I'm excited, but this is our second trip there pregnant so I'll miss out on all the big rides I love again. At least I can enjoy the food still!
  • We didn't do a babymoon when I was pregnant with DS. But we did have a staycation. We both took the week off of work/school at the time, and just spent the week together. It was also when we set up the nursery.

This time around we have our 16 month old. Traveling with a toddler is not as easy as some might think haha! Plus we really can't afford a trip right now. And DS is still nursing. So my hope is that once he weans (I'm hoping in the next month or two) that we can have him stay with the grandparents for a weekend. It'll be nice just to sleep in and have a couple of days to stay in our PJs lol
  • One of my best friends is getting married in Los Angeles in February. I would rather give birth on the dance floor than miss it, so I think we'll make a long weekend of it and leave DD with my parents.
