Random Pregnancy Purchases

One of my pregnancy symptoms is I'll go through this phase every few months of pregnancy where suddenly I'll just purchase something random and weird. A fleece dinosaur costume. A tube that you wave around and tie up into a lounge chair.

Anyone else? What have you purchased recently that, perhaps upon reflection, may have not have been... well... strictly necessary. Or useful. Or logical.

  • @slartybartfast You absolutely need genie pants. This is your pregnancy and your comfort matters.

I haven't made any weird purchases but that doesn't mean I haven't logged out of my husband's amazon just so he doesn't see what I've been browsing.

My problem is that I keep finding crafty things to add to my list. I'm pretty much done with sewing nursery stuff....so Right now I'm spending entirely too much time researching how to make my own hospital gown, nursing gowns, etc. Because I like making my life more difficult, obviously.

  • I feel like I will get into the random spending mode when I start working on the nursery. Once that starts coming together, I'm sure I will find things I absolutely "need" for his room. Most of my purchases now usually revolve around food and Starbucks.
  • I feel like everything that I've bought for the nursery isn't "necessary" because I do have some old sheets, changing pad covers, bed skirt, etc. from my two boys. But I'm having a girl! Lol And although I don't actually need girly things, this is my last chance so I'm buying this stuff anyways  :D
Another thing is that my husband really wants a video monitor. I don't think it's necessary but it's fine and it'll be one of our bigger splurges this pregnancy.
  • @lisa3379 That will be once we FINALLY get started on the room, which has not even been touched yet. I have ideas in my head, and once I have décor ideas... I can't stop! I want to buy stuff now, but know I need to wait until we at least know where in the room we're going to put the crib and dresser and can go from there. I have a goal of 10/31 to have what is in the room now cleaned out, and at least the crib/dresser put in place so I can do my thing. Hopefully sooner... cos that is forever away! It's mainly cos DH goes hunting in November, so he won't be around to help with that when he's gone for his little trips.

I can't say that I have bought anything off the wall yet. I bought some Halloween candy yesterday at Target, but I would have bought that regardless. *lol*

  • I've purchased plenty of random things for the baby... mostly clothes. #cantstopwontstop
i also got myself an adorable pair of Sanuks because, comfort?  But seriously these things are dreamy. And were on sale at journeys for $20!
  • Confession: an older woman was wearing white genie pants while we were at Story Land in NH this weekend...... I judged her.

  • I haven't been buying weird items but I have a undeniable urge to want to buy things. Doesn't matter what. Hangers for the closet. Maternity cardigans. Groceries without coupons. Disney nightgowns. I log on Amazon and try to justify a need for a lightening deal.  I didn't realize impulse shopping was a pregnancy symptom but that's what I'm blaming.
  • The only random thing I've bought so far is a Christmas present for DD2. I was buying a Melissa and Doug toy on Amazon for DD1 that was on sale and needed something else for free shipping so bought a little light up owl that plays music. DD1 found it and wanted it and cried when I took it from her. I guess "that's not yours, it's your little sister's" isn't okay now, nor will it ever be okay!

  • I'm the complete opposite. I've not bought a single thing. Nothing. The impulse just isn't there. I bought a pregnancy pillow and sent it back. Eaton's nursery is still completely bare. It'll probably change I'm guessing when nesting actually kicks in. As for now though, I have literally bought nothing for my child or for myself really either lately. I'm not a big shopper anyway, but I feel like I've been less inclined to buy things since I got pregnant. *shrug*

I'm buying stuff off of my own registry because I don't want to wait for my shower to start stockpiling nursery stuff... mostly when I see it go on sale, but still. My husband still uses the nursery as his "home office" - it's nowhere near being baby-ready.
This is me as well! Right now the huge babyfest sale is on at BRU here and there are some really good deals on my list! It was all I could do to not buy everything...the sale goes to September 22 so I'm watching my registry like a hawk.

You guys make me laugh :) I love the random buying.
We've gotten some baby clothes, and I bought a pack of huggies wipes at Costco because they were on sale. And they came with a nemo wipes container! Lol! I also found a used (in awesome shape!) click connect jogging stroller for $75. DH was annoyed, thought I paid too much and wanted to just get a new one... Until he saw the prices of the new ones! Then he declared me a genius.
Most of my random spending is on food. I HAD to have kimchi last week, got some, ate one meal with it, and now it's sitting in my fridge.
I have a whole Amazon wish list, but holding out till after the baby shower. That I don't really want to have. But I convinced my mom that the only way Im doing it is if we don't do the games, I just want to eat and hang out. And this is our 3rd baby. I've been to about 8,000 baby showers in the last year. I'm done with the games.
    JUST GIVE ME THE FOOD.

Add me to the list of those who just need to buy stuff.  It doesn't matter what, I just feel the need to spend money.  I ordered Kai's mattress yesterday and some clothes for the other kids, including Christmas PJs.  I love online shopping; getting the packages makes me way happier than it should.

edited to add: @R0824H I have been loving the Babies R Us sale here too!  The breastpump I want is $50 off and I'm going to get it today.  Somehow I doubt that's all I'll buy....
  • I just bought two Naked Nursing Tanks, they look awesome.  You can wear your own bra with and any shirt to bf and it covers up your tummy, which is not something I want hanging out after having a baby.
  • I have the opposite problem, I want to hoard all the money lol. It's driving DH nuts. We have things to get for the house and the baby, but every time I go look, I'm just like well we should wait..lets get through my maternity leave and the hospital bill. The baby stuff will have to get purchased though, I promised DH after my showers. Good thing is I've literally gone to Target many times now and not spent a dime...soooo unlike me!

@cgss11 if I even drive passed Target my bank account drops by $100.  I'm impressed with your willpower!!!

@Austenista hooray for finally buying something!!!!  I love our consignment sale, I think our JBF is coming up next weekend and I am hoping to make time to go and score some baby stuff on the cheap.

I'm also trying to justify upgrading to the iPhone 7 as a baby related expense.  I'm going to need the better camera, right?

    Save me from myself bumpies!!!
  • I'm considering buying a robot vacuum. Our new house is all tile and I really don't want to sweep dog hair daily. The real roombas are super expensive though.  :s My mom has a knockoff brand. It works alright but is kind of dumb and gets stuck in corners. But he was only $180 vs the $500 roomba. Just not sure if he's worth it. Real problems...
  • @BabyRobbinsAdventure lol!!!! I was laughing, and DH was asking what I was laughing about. I couldn't even tell him!

  • @tinattt23 I want a roomba as well! But DH laughs at me every time I say anything about it. He's convinced our dog will attack it (he probably would).

I keep buying ridiculous non-essential baby stuff. For example, we do not have any nursery furniture yet but I spent >$100 on a custom monogram wall hanging. For above the crib that we don't have yet. I'm pretty sure my priorities are screwed up.
  • @kbduke My mom and best friend both have (knockoff) roombas with their dogs. They were freaked for a few days but got over it. My mom's tried to eat the hair on her golden retriever's tail. Dog didn't care for that one bit and now will only lay on the couch while it runs. When we stayed with my mom for a week, my dog didn't even seem to notice it. She's oblivious...
  • Ummmmmm, yeah, I may have dropped 250 this weekend on baby stuff that I swore I wouldn't look at until after the showers. My bad.

  • If you have pets and a Roomba, be careful - the Roomba doesn't know any better than to try to vacuum up doodoo, fail, and then run round the house all night spreading brown streaks across the floor.
