Pregnant after IF

bleeding/spotting at 5 1/2 weeks

Good morning ladies, I really hope to graduate to this board soon! A little background on me...I did a fresh cycle in July which resulted in a BFN. We moved right into a frozen cycle in August. My first beta on the 30th was 25 and then to our surprise a week later on 9/6, my beta shot up to 848! We were over the moon; however, this past Saturday I noticed blood in my pad. It was a pinkish brownish color. I did not have a steady flow and wasn't bleeding through my pad but it terrified me. I called the dr. and he said it was very common. Yesterday afternoon I had some bright red blood! It was there every time I went to the bathroom and wiped. Today it is back to brown so far. I'm going in for blood work this morning to check my hcg levels. I'm so nervous! Has anyone ever had bleeding very early on and is now far into there pregnancy? I'm looking for some reassurance. Thanks!

Re: bleeding/spotting at 5 1/2 weeks

  • I have read that ladies on here have had bleeding I had a brown discharge in the beginning it would happen and stop and then start again. I think based on the other ladies u are fine but I'm not a dr good luck keep us posted
  • Hey there ! Congrats on your pregnancy . I am so sorry you are bleeding . I know first hand how scary it is . I had spotting (brownish) before my beta and then I had mild bleeding that turned into a huge bleed at around 5/6 weeks . I went in to the ER at that time and was diagnosed with a subchorionic hematoma . The blood then ranged from brown to bright red . I've always read bright red blood is bad news so of course I felt horrible . The doctor said that this posed no risk to my baby as long as it bled out and didn't get too big . I bled for a few days then it resolved .

I thought I was in the clear until the end of my 14th week same thing happened .. Only this time an even bigger bleed - like a period . I went to the ER and they told me the same thing as the first time . An US showed that my baby was developing right on track and was moving like crazy . That bleed resolved in a day or so .

I am now currently 30 weeks and my pregnancy has been smooth sailing since then . I had no idea bleeding was so common but it seems especially more common with IVF . I'm not sure why . I hope you get some reassurance at the doctor !

  • I had spotting at 6 and 15 weeks which terrified me as well. Both instances were brownish, but at one point during the 15 week instance there was a lot of dark red when I wiped. First time it stopped after 2 days, second time it went on for about a week. Doctors do say it's very common and I also read the same on these board from other ladies experiencing the same. I hope it's nothing in your case as well and your appointment today confirms that!

  • I too had spotting every time I would wipe around week 5/6. I tried not to worry too much because it wasn't a lot of blood, and it wasn't an alarming color. It could be something as simple as irritation to any meds you're putting high in your vagina, or if you BD it could cause some bleeding. I hope your blood draw today eases your worries!

  • I also had spotting, both brown and red in week 4, and again week 6, and it totally freaked me out, until I told my RE. He wasn't phased at all and told me not to worry. It seems to be very common.
Hoping all goes well for you and that the blood work will ease your mind.

You do what you have to do to get your baby to stick around, even if it means painful butt injections every single day. It's worth it to be and stay pregnant. • @lilmissslp I can't tell you not to worry because I have been there, but please stay positive and don't let the fear take over you. I had brown spotting , then at 6 weeks heavy period-like bleeding with bright red blood and cramps, I freaked out, ran to the Dr and like many other ladies here was diagnosed with a Subchorionic hematoma. The bleeding stopped a little while later, and it never happened again. I am 16 weeks and baby is looking great, the SCH is completely gone.
The day of the bleeding I asked my RE if there was still hope and he told me there was more hope than anything else! I'll be praying for you, try and get an ultrasound as soon as you can for peace of mind

  • @lilmissslp I'm so sorry you're going through this. If you have good insurance maybe see if you can go to the er for an u/s or are there any urgent care places near you that does u/s? You can just tell them you're experiencing bleeding and are pregnant and they'll see you. My sister went to the er when she was bleeding because her doctor wouldn't see her till the following week.
  • Yah @ale9687 makes a good point . You can go to the ER if it would make you feel better . That's what I did . Even though I ended up with a bill from it it was worth it to me to know what was going on .

  • My first pregnancy us was at 6 weeks, we saw the sac and even saw the heartbeat. It was right after that appointment that I bled and they also saw the SCH. It is definitely  possible to see something at 6 weeks, like others said. I find it upsetting that they told you that, a huge aspect of treating infertility is dealing with the psychological side of it and and an us could give you answers and peace.
Anyway, the most important thing is for you to stay calm like you said, sending you lots of positive vibes!!

  • *TW* I'm one of the stories you don't want to possibly read about, but know that we are all here to support you.  My beta numbers were really high, and they suspected twins.  The RE wouldn't do an u/s on me until week 7, but at 6w2d, I bled a lot... they did see me that afternoon, but I was hysterical (I can't even remember some of it).  Come to find out, I did have twins, but one miscarried (it was a complete miscarriage, not just reabsorption).  They saw one heartbeat still on the screen when they did an u/s that afternoon.  They said that if you had an IVF with FET, the chance of bleeding is increased. I'm hoping it's just an SCH, even those should still be taken seriously and can cause a lot of anxiety for us with IF.  I was completely OOP as well, and had spent about 27K at that point with medications, IVF, and FET.  Keep thinking positive. Sending you huge creepy internet hugs.

@lilmissslp Hey girl! We were in the same Ivf board back in July together. So happy to see your frozen went well! I'll try to give you a little  reassurance from my situtation.

I started bleeding right at five weeks for 10 days straight that ranged from brownish blood to bright red blood that was pretty constant every time I went to the bathroom, but never filling up a pad. I ended up doing a third beta just to give me a piece of mind. I finally got an ultrasound at 7 weeks and it showed I had a small blood clot that was most likely a tear from the placenta just pulling a bit (apparently pretty common) It also showed baby was measuring about a week small. I went back 2 weeks later at 9 weeks and bleeding had stopped, blood clot was gone, baby was measuring perfect and heart beat was good!

Im now at 11 weeks and still doing well with no bleeding. Hope this helps give you a little comfort. It's hard to think that bleeding isn't the end of it all after being through what we have but so far my baby is looking good! Thinking of you!
  • @sunflower, good to see A familiar face. I went to hit like and I accidentally hit report so I hope you don't get an email about your post or get in trouble. I appreciated your post and it makes me feel better. I just talk to the nurse and my hCG went up to 7115.  Although that's a good number she said it should still be doubling every three days and it didn't. She seemed concerned about that and my bleeding and says to be prepared and this might not be good. Blah this is a roller coaster

  • Im sorry to hear the nurse is concerned, that doesn't help with your worrying.
Ill keep everything crossed for you and keep you in my prayers that it's still going to be ok.
As lots of the other ladies said I too had bleeding, mine was a little over 5 weeks and bright red.
They never bothered to check my HcG and on the ultrasound I had a sac but it was empty, so they had little hope (and so did I)
    But hang in there.
Let your loved ones take good care of you, try to do something you love or just get pampered.
GL to you, hang in there @lilmissslp xoxo

  • Thanks @tvh1982. I'm trying to stay positive. My hcg is still going up so I thought that would be a good thing. Thank you so much for your positive words and prayers.

  • @lilmissslp I'm so sorry you're going through this. My RE also didn't check my HCG anymore although I had some spotting and bright red bleeding. They went straight to ultrasound and all was ok.
Cant believe they are making you wait until Tuesday. That's just torture. Have you considered just going to a hospital or EPU? otherwise I sometimes ask my husband to help out: he will bug the clinic until we get what we need. Sounds awful but we need to be selfish in these moments. You need to feel ok and this anxiety is not good...
I'm so sorry. Sending you lots of strength x

  • Hi @lilmissslp we were both on the aug fet board. good to see you here! I have absolutely the same story as @yellow. I've been spotting pretty much ever since implantation. It was brown spotting and the dr. said no biggie. then at 6w2d I started bleeding. Full flow for 1/2 days. Went to ER where they saw a perfect measuring baby with hb and all. The reason for bleeding is SCH. I didn't bleed like that after that day, but was still spotting every day. Just had my U/S yesterday and at this point the SCH measuring much smaller than the sack so the dr. said the sack will eventually suppress it. I'm keeping my FX that you will have a great u/s next week.
