March 2017 Moms

hoping for the same gender as previous children

i see a lot of moms commenting online and to me, about how they hope for a different sex than the gender of their child(ren) that they have already.

and that kind of got me thinking.. and realizing.. i don't feel that way. when i was pregnant with DS we were team green. but all i wanted was a girl. i was obsessed. and when he was born, he was a boy and it was a complete shock. but now he's almost 7 and being pregnant with twins I've caught myself silently hoping that they're both boys.
I just feel comfortable with boys.. i know what to expect. not to mention it would be cheaper as i already have boy clothes and toys and all that stuff.

I'm sure having a girl would be great too, but it's not as big of a need as I thought it would be if i ever got pregnant again and it kind of surprised me!!
anyone else in the same boat as me?

I get it. I am so excited to be having a little boy, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't internally panic when we found out. I'm used to DD and grew up w a sister. I don't know what to do with boys?! I'm excited to learn though. <3

  • Yep!! I assumed, like you, it would be the "norm" to want a boy since I have a girl.  But me (and DH) both are actually hoping for another girl!  I know having another girl doesn't promise it'll be without lots of new adventures and challenges, but it seems easier to have the same sex!!  Also would love to not have to buy stuff!
  • Yes! Had 2 girls. This will be 3rd. You can give me all the girls in the world. I get to use the same clothes, dress them alike, dress them like me, and girl clothes are so cute.
  • Yup! Everyone kept asking me if I was hoping for a boy because I have a DD. I assured them that no, I want another girl. Turns out we're having a boy, and still working through the shock :)

  • I was thrilled my first two were both the same sex, especially since they're so close in age. I think having a sister is so wonderful. I wouldn't mind at all having a third girl - we already have all the adorable clothes, why not use them a third time?? Plus, matching hairdos, so many fun things about three girls! But on the other hand, I'm happy to have a boy, and we plan on more after this, so either way I won't feel stressed that it's our last chance or anything. It's nice to really not have a preference either way, much more relaxing.

  • I'm so happy I'm having a second girl. I have two sisters and they are my best friends in the entire world. My DH is really sad though in that he'll never have a son to teach how to be a man or have that father son relationship as he gets older. I can understand how he feels and I do feel sad for him to not get to experience that.
  • With my first I desperately wanted a boy, always had, but she ended up being a girl. When I got pregnant with my second (and certainly my last, or so I thought at the time), I was sure I'd be even more boy-crazy, but I actually went back and forth. I still leaned toward boy just to have one of each, but I cared so much less even though I "knew" that would be my last chance for a boy. This time I really don't care much either way. Part of me wants a girl just so I don't have to deal with circumcision again (DS handled his circ perfectly well; I did not, but I know we would choose to circ again if this is a boy). The other part of me wants a boy so that the two same sex siblings would be closer in age (3 years apart rather than 5) and because out of seven grandchildren on DH's side, DD would still be the only girl.

  • No one knows what to do with either sex. Just like you had no clue what to do when  you had a boy, you'll figure it out if they are girls. I have one of each though. I secretly want a girl this time, just because I wanted a sister which is a random reason, but whatevs. Brothers would be fun:)
  • Definitely hoping for another boy...as pp's have said we already have all the gear plus I was never a girly girl and if we do have a daughter I worry I'll be terrible at playing dress up and tea party should she want to..plus we have a boys name we love and can't really find anything for a girl

My daughter doesn't play dress up or okay with dolls or barbies. Even if you have a girl, you may be okay! She loves sports and playing with her brother.
  • My DD was born in April and my DS was born in December. I'm not sure her clothes would have worked for him (had he been a girl) since the seasons would be so off (and he ended up being huge and she was so small which would have thrown it off more!) but I did get to reuse the gender neutral stuff.

This time I am hoping for another girl though for the same reason as many of you - and the clothes/seasons would align almost perfectly so everything should fit and be seasonally appropriate! ;)
  • I always thought I would want a boy since I already have a girl, but now I'm like a girl would be so much easier.  The kids are going to be sharing a room and I already have all the girl things.  I won't be disappointed if it's a boy.  I'm sure I would be thrilled and maybe even sad if I don't have a boy.  I'm all over the place, huh?
  • @NurseMama that would be ideal lol
  • I would be happy with either, but being a mom to a boy, I feel like I "know" boys. For example: getting baby poop off of little boy balls. Been there, done that. Getting poop out of a baby vagina? Not so much.

Another boy would just be easier not to mention the fact that we have all of the boy stuff.

I was pleased when Sneak Peek said boy, so we'll see if that is confirmed.

    That's my concern!!!

  • Guys, I assure you that cleaning up a girls diaper is easier than a boys. You'll do just fine! Be scared of the mood swings. I just remember my preteen self;)

thanks for all the good input ladies!! glad to know it's not necessarily uncommon to secretly hope for the same sex! of of course if one or both are female i'm sure i'll be thrilled as well. and honestly, the poop thing was a concern of mine too lol i just mentioned it to DH yesterday.

  • I'm in this boat! So much so that I've 100% convinced myself this baby is a boy. We are team green but I'm pretty much telling everyone to stop entertaining the idea of a girl. i just feel strongly that it's a boy!... We'll see in March I guess and boy do I hope I'm not wrong!

Its not that I wouldn't love a girl because I have significantly younger sisters that I helped raise. I'm not afraid of them. I just LOVE being a boy mom, I have all the clothes and accessories and I'm so close to DS who is 18 months.  He'll be great with either I'm sure and is very excited for "baby belly".
  • I keep going back and forth. I think 2 girls would be so much fun, but a little boy would be so out of the norm in my family that it would be that much more exciting. I'm team green cause I don't really care to know early but some days I pray it's a second little girl, I think about DD being older and sharing secrets with her sister, fighting over clothes and having bonding sisterly time together. It would be pretty special. (Fast forward to real life I'm sure I would laugh at that comment as they're fighting with each other over everything) I have no idea how brothers and sisters bond but I'm sure it would be just as great, just new to me.
  • Everyone assumes we want a boy, I hear " you need a boy this time" constantly.  But I think I'm a good girl mom, I know what to do with girls. My husband doesn't care either way (he says) and I'm secretly hoping for a girl.
