What sizes did you wear after birth?

I'm contemplating whether I need more maternity clothes - so here's the question, after delivery, what clothes can you fit into?
If the answer is maternity clothes for a couple months postpartum I might cave and buy more. If I can get away with my regular 'fat' clothes I'll wait it out....

Re: What sizes did you wear after birth?

  • I lived in sweats and yoga pants for months.

  • I was definitely a few sizes bigger for a couple months and didn't want to look pregnant anymore so I avoided my maternity clothes. I just bought new looser fitting clothes until I could fit into my old stuff again.

  • I wore my maternity pants for the first 2/3 weeks but could fit into my normal shirts (I normally wear loser/stretchy tops). But to be honest the first 2 weeks you probably won't even want to try your pre-pregnancy clothes.
  • I spent a lot of time in casual clothes at first, often pajamas, or if I got dressed, then sweat pants and t-shirts. My "normal" dressier/more fitted clothes didn't fit for several months but neither did maternity clothes. Most of the time I chose things I wouldn't mind getting spit up/pooped on. If I wanted to feel put together, dresses were good options for me since they fit a lot sooner and disguised my deflated but still very squishy belly.
  • All my cozy clothes worked for around the house, but my pre-preg jeans and pants just did not work. I got some maternity pants with the low panels and wore them for a few months. I could wear regular shirts, but lived in loose, flowy ones or zip up hoodies for a long time.

  • For about the first month I used maternity clothes. After that I went shopping and bought looser tops and jeans that were about 2 sizes bigger than my pre pregnancy size.
  • After a few weeks I hated my maternity jeans so I went and bout a pair of regular jeans that fit me at the time. I wore those for a long time until I lost the majority of the baby weight. I wore my maternity shirts for about 5 months until I went back to work and bought some new tops at that point since I work in an office and couldn't be super casual. Most of my old clothing never fit right again after the baby. I was about a size or two bigger permanently.
  • awww man am I the only one who wants to keep wearing maternity clothes forever? I love my maternity shorts way more than any other shorts and I have a few dresses that aren't really typical maternity (though they are Motherhood brand) that I plan on wearing next summer

I was this way last time until I realized that my maternity bottoms didn't help hold in any of the extra belly and the tops accentuated what was no longer a bump with a baby in it...

I did preserve some lose flow maternity tops because they hid the "baggage" and were nursing friendly. But, "hooray" for yoga pants and leggings!

  • The maternity pants start falling down.  I could wear the next size up pretty quickly.

  • I wore maternity home from the hospital and for a few days afterwards and then every size between that and my pre-pregnancy size until I got down there!   I recommend a bit post partum going out and buying a few clothes that look nice.  It helps while the weight is just starting disappear.

  • So most of you were able to get down to prepregnancy after a couple months? That's good. I'd be super bummed if I permanently went up a size bc I bought so many cute clothes in last two years.

Nope!   Never fully got down to pre-pregnancy weight after my first daughter and it took 6-8 months to get there after my 2nd daughter.   I would say it probably took 3-4 months to be close to pre-pregnancy after both my daughters.  Every woman is different though!!!

  • Even if you manage to loose all the pregnancy weight your body changes with pregnancy and chances are you old clothes won't fit the same even if your scale says you are back to normal. Obviously this isn't true for everyone but don't be surprised if you have to let go of your old clothes. I'd say a safe bet is 1 to 2 sizes up from pre pregnancy sizes.
  • It seriously depends! I actually went down an additional size from my prepregnancy size.  My stomach skin was never the same though - good enough for a bikini, just not as tight.

  • My shape was forever changed. My hips are wider and I carry more weight in my thighs now, plus my stomach requires longer shirts to fully cover now. Though I did get down to pre pregnancy weight, I could never fit in pre baby clothes or sizes again.

Well this is pretty depressing! I would be so sad if this happens to me!

It may not happen to you. Some women do bounce back beautifully, I just was not one of the lucky ones! My best friend wasn't either. It was a rude awakening to her that she couldn't fit in juniors jeans anymore and had to shop in the ladies section.

Btw, did you call your dr about the cramps and pain in your back?
  • @BmcD2016 I haven't had any cramps yesterday or today and baby has been moving around like normal (he's currently giving himself a foot massage on my ribs). If it starts up again or he stops moving then I'll call. I also have another appointment next week so I will be seeing my doctor again pretty soon. Thanks for checking in!
  • To all the FTM I wouldn't worry to much about how fast it takes to lose all your baby weight. Everyone is different and every pregnancy is different after my first it took me 6months and then by the time he was 8months I was smaller then before pregnancy(I gained 60lbs with him and went from a size 1-3 to a size 11) With DD#1 I only gained 30lbs but only lost 10lbs ended up staying a size 3/5. Gained the same amount with DD#2 and only lost 10lbs as well and ended up a 5/7 for a few years. Before I got pregnant this time I was 3/5 but I'm a little over 32 weeks and have gained 25lbs. I always give myself 6-12months to lose the weight and not everyone's shape will change but some will. If you have ever fluctuated in weight I would use that as an example of how your body will change..
  • @Muscatmommyof4 I get what you're saying and I'm not really that concerned about losing the weight (easy to say that now, right?!) but I would really like it if when I do lose the weight my body shape stays the same! I mean, not that there's any use in worrying about it since I can't control it. Ah well, we'll see what happens!

I didn't start losing weight (beyond the baby, extra blood, etc) until after I stopped breastfeeding. It then came off in about 4 months. Though I would be remiss if I did not mention that I also gained 80 lbs with my first.

And when I stopped breastfeeding I gained 10 lbs lolol.  It's so different for each person! You just never know unfortunately.

  • I lost the weight fairly quickly (breastfeeding works well for me that way) but my body shape continued to change for about the next 9 months. Hips gradually getting narrower, some of the flub disappearing from my stomach, etc. I went back to my pre-baby shape both times, though I probably will never have defined abs again.

Though...my style has gotten somewhat more conservative as I've left my 20s and am now nearly midway through my 30s.

Right no one wants to have a baby and then after be one of those people who never looks the same or feels the same. I understand completely! I struggled with an eating disorder for years and still struggle with body image issues and it was very hard after my first baby to adjust to being so much bigger then I had ever been. And I thought I would never look the same again but I was wrong it just took a little longer then I thought to get there.... From what I can see in your pics I wouldn't worry I'm sure you will snap back no problem!
