How do you know when to move baby up to the next nipple size? We're currently using a level 1 Dr browns with exclusive breastmilk. DD is 12.5 weeks old.
She's suddenly started spitting up a lot. Thoughts? Thanks
You really don't ever have to go up in nipple size. I've read somewhere that the human nipple doesn't start having a faster flow so there's no need for a bottle nipple to. My 20 week old still uses a size 1 plus I thicken her bottles with a special thickener and she still manages to choke. I can't imagine going up a size with her. If your LO is spitting up then going up a size in nipples will probably make it worse.
This actually happened with my LO - she began spitting up a lot with increased gas right around 3 months. Asked her ped and they actually suggested trying a bigger nipple because she was probably sucking harder = excess air. She was so showing signs of frustration. We too use dr.browns and went up to level 2 and it made a huge change. She still paces herself and although she eats a little quicker it's nothing crazy. Quit spitting up almost immediately. Could be a coincide but it may be worn a try!
The reason they go up is because they get more efficient at eating. If your baby is getting frustrated at the nipple, go up. I think I read that they should finish a bottle in 15 minutes??
