8w3d ultrasound.. Twin B no heartbeat?

Hey there ladies!

We went for our 6w0d ultrasound and only saw one baby, measuring exactly correct. My hormone levels had been through the roof (almost quadrupling instead of doubling) so my doctor had joked "wouldn't be surprised if we saw twins!" We laughed it off but asked at the 6w ultrasound if she saw only one and she said "I only see one." Heartbeat measuring 102bpm. We went back in this morning for a follow up Uktrasound at 8w3d to check continued growth and they found that the baby was growing perfectly and heartbeat was 178.. Even got to hear it ❤️ Near the end, the tech started looking around at the screen and got quiet, then typed a "2" ... And I knew what that meant... I've done my research lol
Found identical twin B yolk sak and fetal pole, no heartbeat, though.
At first we were just kind of shocked like Oh!! But over the day it kind of sank in and it's kinda sad now that I've been thinking about it. We go back two weeks from today just to check on continued growth of baby A and to "check out baby B" whatever that means.... Any experience with this? It's unlikely that the second baby will continue to progress after measuring two weeks behind, right? What are they going to be checking for at the next US?  Also, maybe a dumb question.. But once a twin stops growing/progressing, what happens to it? Does the body absorb it? Didn't think to ask at the appointment.

Thanks ❤️

Re: 8w3d ultrasound.. Twin B no heartbeat?

  • So sorry! I found out at 5 weeks that I was expecting twins. Even then baby "a" was measuring 5 days behind.  I just felt something was off and so they did another ultrasound at 7wks and baby "a" no longer had a heartbeat.  I was told my body would either miscarry the baby or my body would just absorb it.  Another ultrasound at 10wks showed both babies still.  Then at 17wk ultrasound baby "a" can no longer be seen because other baby has grown and is taking up the space. So wev aren't sure if body has already absorbed it or its just not visible anymore. Dr. Is not concerned and has said many times if it wasn't for my early ultrasound we wouldn't have even known we had twins. Went for my 20wk scan today and remaining baby is healthy and growing normal! I too felt very sad and cried when we found out we had lost one. I had a hard time grieving the loss but also feeling grateful that we still had a healthy little nugget. I still get sad wondering all the what ifs.
  • I have a SIL who went through the same thing. She bled for a few days and she mc the 2nd baby. Dr did tell her either mc or absorption would happen.

  • @vrj0522 thank you... Doctor just said "we'll do another ultrasound in 2 weeks and go from there. But all of my questions didn't sink in until after I'd left
  • @Knottie25816533 aww. Thank you for sharing your story. And yay for your healthy little baby. It is an odd feeling to be saddened by losing one but over the moon at the same time for your healthy, growing baby. The doctor and the ultrasound technician both told me the same thing.. "I'm sure we would find that a lot more pregnancies start out as twins or other multiples but most women don't receive such early ultrasounds and therefore wouldn't have ever known the difference" So I guess it's more common than it may appear. Right now I'm just hoping that my body will naturally "reabsorb" baby B and I won't have to deal with any bleeding scares.
  • We were told to prepare for my baby A to not make it since he was measuring 12 days behind and the RE talked to us about vanishing twin syndrome where the body absorbs the baby.  My little guy ultimately pulled through, my thoughts are with you.
