I need a Doctor still! I can't be alone!

I still haven't found an ob that I like. I am struggling to find someone who I vibe with. I went to one practice for my yearly last year where I liked a doctor, but she is a nurse midwife and I would have to commit to a natural birth, which I am not ready to do. I delivered my first two in a different town, but we moved when my husband got relocated, and I can not find anyone I like here.
I need to find someone, and I need an appointment!
Am I alone?!

Re: I need a Doctor still! I can't be alone!

  • I see nurse midwives and they allow medicated births. They're just a lot less hands on which I like. My water never broke (until the moment I gave birth) and my midwife was like, I can break it for you. I asked if she had to, and she said not really. Its your birth. I love that. I'd look up midwife groups and see who works in tandem with obs. Not sure how big your town is, but the two huge hospitals near me have midwives who support all types of labor plans and don't badger you about getting the epidural. Otherwise, maybe ask local mom groups for a recommendation?

  • Are you part of a local mama group on Facebook? If not, I highly recommend it! We just relocated a couple months ago so I had to start over with finding a new OB/GYN etc. I loved my last one and was really sad she couldn't relocate with us haha. Anyways, there are always recommendation requests on my local group and because of them, I found a practice that sounds like a good fit. We are still waiting for our new insurance information to be finalized before we schedule an appointment, which hopefully won't take much longer.  :#

  • I think I am going to make an appointment with the midwife. She practices in a practice with other MD's and delivers at our local hospital. Maybe I was wrong when I assumed she would only support a drug-free birth.

I really like super low-key prenatal care, so that appealed to me. Thanks for the suggestions!
  • For my list pregnancy I was seeing a doctor and didn't love the experience so I switched over to the midwife  team. There is a group of 5 midwives that work from my hospital. All of my appointments were at the hospital, last time I tried to make at least 1 appointment with each of them that way I would know them when I went into labor since whoever is there that day will help deliver. My experience with a midwife was great. She was willing to do whatever I wanted and was very helpful and full of suggestions. I had an epidural without any problems. In my observation midwives are very present during the laboring process and more hands on. The births I have seen with doctors were not that way, the doctor only came around every once in awhile. I will definitely be using the midwifes again, I cant say enough good things about the midwives at Henry Ford West Bloomfield!

Do call your insurance though and make sure it is covered.

I also had a midwife deliver my first. I had an epidural but she never pushed it, just waited for me to ask for it. I say definitely see her and try to take a list of questions that are important to you. If you end up seeing things differently, you can always switch.

  • where are you located?

  • We moved last year so I also need to find an OB. I don't even know if I'm supposed to get a referral from my PCP or call one directly. Too busy to deal with it yet.

  • Don't forget that many family doctors deliver babies too (and can take care of your baby afterwards - bonus!). And definitely give yourself a little time to find someone with the right vibe - it's one of the most important choices you will make!

I just moved to a new state. No doc/midwife yet here! Still trying to decide on the closer, smaller hospital vs the farther, bigger hospitals...
I had an OB with my first, he didn't actually deliver since he was not on call that weekend. With my second I switched practices and used a midwife (same hospital) I will definitely be using a midwife again (unless I go with the small hospital which seems to not have midwives delivering there...)

  • The OB/GYN that delivered my son and has been my doctor for 6 years is not delivering babies anymore! I am extremely upset because she is amazing and I literally trust her with my life and my unborn baby's life.

She is going to see me through my 1st trimester (I'm going to try to convince her to take me through the 2nd trimester) and then she is going to refer me to another OB in the area. She said she will co-manage my birth and be at my labor and delivery but won't officially be the delivering OB. I really hope the OB she refers me to is amazing and that we connect cause it can be hard to find the right fit! It's one of the most important times for my baby and my life!
  • I meet with a new Dr on Wednesday. I absolutely loved my last Dr but unfortunately he doesn't take my new insurance. It was either DS kept his Dr or I kept mine. I'm praying I like this practice as well but am so nervous.
  • When I was 7 months pregnant with my son we moved to a new state so I had to find an OB really fast. I ended up with a practice where the nurse midwives do the regular deliveries. I actually really liked it. It was a very calm atmosphere in the delivery room. And I was still able to get an epidural.

  • My old/current OB isn't delivering babies any more so I'm on the hunt for a new one.  Thankfully I'm still working with my RE so I have early blood work and ultrasounds.

I am hoping to find a doc I like that does VBACs.

  • My ob just retired and left the practice so I'm looking for a good fit seeing a new guy in the office Thursday
  • I won't ever see an OB for prenatal appointments and I don't mind.  Where I live we just see our GP until later in pregnancy and then some women start seeing an OB and some just see their GP and deliver with the OB or midwife on call.  Since the hospital we all go to had on call OBs there's no guarantee that even if you saw one for prenatal care that you'd get them for delivery.  However, I hated the hospital I had my daughter at and I'm planning to drive an extra 20 miles to deliver at the hospital I had my son at.  That one is GP run, so I'll just start driving there at 32 and 36 weeks to meet my GP and pre-register at the hospital and maybe never see an OB at all.

  • I'm the same as @JCWhitey I will just see my GP until around 20 weeks which is when I will see a rotation of OB's at the hospital I will deliver at, I will continue to see my GP until I deliver as well.

  • I just spent 2 hours on this because my insurance website is a complete mess and I'm so mad.

I have several options nearby and I don't know what to go with. For #1 I had no choice. For #2 the choice was very obvious. This is the first time I might need to "shop around" so to speak and I don't really know how to do it, also considering what's covered insurance-wise. (We have lived in different locations for each child's birth.)

My ideal situation would be pretty similar to what I had for #2:
    1) a practice/group so I'm not tied to a single person, but a practice small enough that I'd get to know each provider well.
    2) a midwife -- I had a better experience this way with #2 than with an OB with #1
    3) nearby location, both for convenience of the quite frequent prenatal visits, and for ease of getting there when it's time. I have labored quickly in the past, but I also know what labor feels like and could travel a distance if needed, probably. We can probably mobilize helpers quickly for the kids, as that would be a factor.
    4) delivery in a hospital; in spite of 2 non-complicated births, I'm a little worried about going with a birth center, though I'm open to it.

I don't know how to search for these things all at once. And it's complicated by the fact that the insurance's website has completely inaccurate information, so I can't really use it to find providers that cover me.

  • I really don't want to use the same OB I used to deliver my DS.  This post inspired me to stay up late last night and research some doctors. I think I've found someone! I'll keep you posted.
  • I only have a GP so far and i'm going to see her this coming Tuesday (i will be 7+ weeks at this point). I will check with her how she is about pregnancy and whatnot. Also just did some googling and found a clinic that i sort of like location wise and that has really good reviews for multiple doctors and in network for both of my insurances, so i think i should be ok either way. I'm a little nervous about being so unprepared in the first place seeing how a lot of people look for their obgyns even before getting pregnant.
