Re: Healthy Living Check- In *Week of Sept 11th*

  • 1. How are you feeling? Any progress to report? I'm 13 days post D&C and still spotting. I wish that would stop so AF can come and I can get on with things. It's annoying not having this part over. I'm getting better emotionally but still having really hard moments every now and then. Physically I feel good though.

    2. What are your nutrition goals for this week? Not eat out so much. We had pizza and Wendy's this week and I tried to make good choices but it's always worse than at home.

    3. What are your fitness goals for the week? Gym at least twice at work and DVD workouts at least three times

    4. What have you struggled with this week/ biggest hurdles?   This week was decent. I got a free week at Orange Theory because my friend is a member. Did 3 workouts there but won't be joining since I have access to the office gym. Food is harder. DH loves his junk food. He's supportive of me doing what I want but he wants his chips and pizza and it's hard for me not to share.

  • 1. How are you feeling? Any progress to report? Feeling tired and anxious. I only worked out twice last week and I was shooting for three times. Started yesterday off with a good workout though.

    2. What are your nutrition goals for this week? Eat more fruits and vegetables.

    3. What are your fitness goals for the week? Do core/ball exercises three days this week.

    4. What have you struggled with this week/ biggest hurdles? I am not a morning person. Getting up an extra 45 minutes early on Wednesday and Friday to work out is really hard for me, especially with how tired I have been. We got up early Wednesday, but didn't manage to Friday.

  • Hello ladies!

    1) I'm still riding the high of ovulating at a semi-normal time and having good timing so I don't feel as bad about my body as I typically do. I'm not sure why but these 10 lbs will not budge and I hate them!

    2) I need to eat more veggies at lunch time. I'm good about having protein and veggies at dinner but lunch I struggle to eat much green. Like today I have chili...wonderful for the cool New England day but no color in this meal (well except red of course)

    3) I had three really good workouts last week but I would prefer 5. My biggest thing is I'd like to workout so hard that I actually sweat. It takes A LOT to make me sweat, like I've had a pit stain in a shirt once in my life and I was kinda proud of myself. I didn't even really sweat through my uniform when I played college basketball and not to be cocky but I played a lot, just didn't really sweat.

    4) My biggest hurdle is going to be not indulging in too much sweet stuff. I got asked to go out for girls night dessert on Wednesday night and it's DHs birthday on Friday so of course will have dessert in the house (I'm thinking I'll try my hand at a chocolate/peanut butter pie). DH doesn't like fruit pies and he's not huge into cake so I struggle to think of what to make him.

  • 1. I feel fat. I've lost 15 pounds since our son was born, but I'm still 25 pounds above my pre-pregnancy weight. I'm still wearing maternity clothes.

    2. I want to eat at home, and eat lots of homemade vegetable soups and green salads. My goal is to ALWAYS have a pot of homemade soup on hand so I'm not tempted to grab something convenient but stupid.

    3. I mapped out a good 2 mile walk in our neighborhood. I want to do that walk at least 5 times this week.

    4. Netflix is the enemy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • 1.) Feeling good. Went to barre 4 times last week and I always feel good after I work out. We went to Toronto on Saturday and I made healthy choices eating out and felt good walking around all day.

2/3.) This week is going to be tough. Have a bunch of social events during the week and Im going away for a wedding this weekend. I wanted to work out a lot during the beginning of the week to offset it but now I am coming down with a cold so probably won't make it to barre 4x this week. Just going to do the best that I can though.

4.) Still feel the need to treat myself too much. Treated myself to a frosty after blood work last week and if Im hungry late at night sometimes I will grab another ice cream sandwich. So I have to work on treating myself and my sweet tooth.

    1. How are you feeling? Any progress to report? Bah!
I'm scared to step on scale. My Heavy Chloe clothes still fit, so I'm concentrating on that. I sent a bunch of size 6/8 suits to Goodwill and DH asked if I was sure I would never wear them again. First of all, it's super rare to see women wearing actual pant suits these days in my professional circle, so no. Second of all, I haven't fit in a size 6 this decade, so I think we are good there.

    2. What are your nutrition goals for this week? More salads, fewer carbs. No sugar.

    3. What are your fitness goals for the week? Work out 5 days this week.

    4. What have you struggled with this week/ biggest hurdles? Honestly my biggest struggle is prioritizing working out. It's just so hard for me these days. I'd love to do Crossfit again or try Orange Theory, but I know I'm gonna get a BFP and be barely functional afterwork.

My RE called and my TSH actually went up even though my dose doubled. So frustrating! It's at close to 3, which isn't awful, but she wants me under 2.5. I'm pretty sure that my poor exercise habits are contributing.
  •  1. How are you feeling? Any progress to report?  Feeling so beyond stressed out from school starting this week. Did not meet my goals from last week. Did not step foot in the gym or go running. I came home, ate and passed out. THe first few weeks make me completely exhausted and barely able to function.

    2. What are your nutrition goals for this week? Already planning ahead for this week made some yogurt and fruit breakfasts and prepped a bunch of salad stuff for lunches, have blue aprons for dinner. Snacks of nuts and fruit for midday.  Have to keep drinking my water so I filled a bunch of jugs with water and green tea for the day.

    3. What are your fitness goals for the week?  This is a tough one considering it's my bday and there is so much going on. My goal will be to hit the gym on Tues and Weds for spin and pilates. Really want to motivate to go on some short runs but I just can't right now. soon!

    4. What have you struggled with this week/ biggest hurdles? This week I had no motivation to work out at all. This week it is my birthday, so we will go out on Thurs and Sat with friends.

@PleaseSendPicklesNow love soups in the fall! What kind do you make? I love my curried lentil with spinach and kale with white beans. I should get to making some next week.

  • @chloe97 - thyroids do weird things. Mine did the same thing in May - increased dose and TSH went up. Unless you gained like 20 lbs in a month, your lack of exercise didn't affect your TSH levels. If you have Hashi's, your thyroid function may go up and down as your immune system attacks your thyroid. I saw an Endo in July for this reason and that was her theory about why my TSH was doing crazy things. As long as you're taking your medication as prescribed (on an empty stomach, no food for 30-60 minutes, and no iron or calcium supplements within 2-4 hours), it's likely just your immune system changing.
  • Thanks @RiverSong15! I don't have hashimotos symptoms. My only symptoms of thyroid disease are thinning hair- I started out with super thick hair and it's like a normal person's hair so I don't mind it. I have dry-ish skin, but that's it. No fatigue or anything like that. My cycles have been regular until the MC and skin is only slightly dry. Oh and weight gain, but I blame that on my sedentary lifestyle- commute 2 hours and sit at a desk all day.

My hypochondria went into overdrive when I read that liver disease could cause Synthroid not to work. I have drank my fair share in my 20s and 30's and so now I'm freaking out about that. I don't have any symptoms So DH and my mom are both trying to talk me down.

@chloe97 - I don't have many Hashi's symptoms either, but my antibodies are really really high. Most hypothyroidism in the western world is due to Hashi's. Most docs don't test for the antibodies, though, as the treatment (Synthroid) is the same either way. Have you had antibodies tested? I'd suspect your variations in TSH are due to variation in thyroid function rather than liver disease - it's the much more likely (and much more harmless) scenario. I understand the hypochondria though. During my second loss, I was convinced they'd find ovarian cancer on all the ultrasounds I was getting. DH had to talk me off the ledge.

Let me know if you ever want to chat thyroid stuff - I've spent a lot of time reading about it over the last couple years. I know there are a good handful of other people on this board with hypothyroidism too.
  • @RiverSong15 Nope have not been tested for thyroid antibodies. Is that T3 and T4? Im starting to wonder if I should be working with an endocrinologist and not an RE now that my levels are doing weird things. It's not super high for TTC-3.1, but of course I'm freaking out that I will get a BFP next week and this won't be resolved. Can I ask what your doseage and where you started out and where you are now? I was at 2.04 last October starting TTC, but that was 15 lbs ago. I went up to 2.5 after my 1st MC (first 5lbs) and the 3.4 at week 5 in my 2nd pregnancy back to 3.04 (at another 10 lbs heavier) this July and up to 3.- after doubling my dose. Do not get it at all!!

So, T3 and T4 are the hormones that your thyroid produces. T4 is what Synthroid is. T3 is the active form of your thyroid hormone. Your body's cells convert T4 to T3. T3 doesn't stay in the system nearly as long as T4, so getting the right dosage is tricky.  T4 hangs around much longer. This is why Synthroid (T4) is the preferred treatment by doctors, and it's why you need to wait 4-6 weeks after a dose adjustment to re-check levels. Some women swear by supplmenting with prescription T3 or taking natural dessicated pig thyroid, but the data don't really exist in scientific studies to show any better treatment.

TSH is the hormone produced by your pituitary gland that tells your thyroid to make more or less thyroid hormones. As your T4 levels drop, your pituitary gland makes more TSH to stimulate your thyroid. It's more sensitive to changes than T3 and T4 levels - a change of around 1 or so in T4 levels produces a 10-fold (roughly) change in TSH levels. That's why it's used to screen for hypothyroidism rather than the thyroid hormones themselves. So, as thyroid function decreases, your T4 levels can be normal, but if your TSH is high, it means your brain is telling you thyroid "Make more! Make more! Wake up!", while your thyroid gland keeps hitting the snooze button for five more minutes.

Thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPO) and anti-thyroglobulin antibodies (TGAb) are two antibodies that are produced when your immune system attacks and destroys your thyroid tissue. This attack can (and often does) occur gradually over time in people with Hashi's (as in, can take years). If you have positive antibodies over a certain threshold, you have Hashi's. The treatment is the same regardless, although it does mean you need to be monitored at least yearly once you find a stable dosage to make sure your thyroid function is stable. I asked to be screened for antibodies because I wanted the most information possible.

For me personally, my PCP screened my thyroid as part of a pre-TTC check up. TSH came back at 6 with normal T4. After waiting three months to check again, TSH went up to 9 with still normal T4. I was diagnosed with subclinical hypothyroidism and  Hashi's and went on Synthroid. It took probably 6 months to get my TSH down below 2 for TTC, and then every time I got pregnant and then MC, it threw my body out of whack and my dosage went up. I'm now on 150 mcg daily, which is a full replacement dose for my body weight. My Endo thinks that's why my last TSH draw was at a "perfect" 1.0, and it's why she thinks my next draw will be stable. She basically thinks my immune system was progressively damaging my thyroid, causing the weird TSH fluctuations, and she thinks it has now completely damaged my thyroid and I have no function left to lose. We'll see what happens when I get off my ass and get it rechecked.

FWIW, while your TSH is above goal, it's not horrible. I think most REs will let patients cycle with a TSH up to 4 as long as they are actively treating it. As long as your T4 levels are normal, you have enough thyroid hormone in your system and should be OK. You just will need to up your dose ASAP after a BFP (around 25-30% increase is normal). My doctor has me do this before I even get in to check my TSH levels after a BFP.

Also, despite all this rigmarole, my Endo, OB, and PCP don't think it played a role in my losses. And my Endo did a residency in OBGYN before going onto Endo, so she has a lot of experience managing hypothyroidism in pregnancy.

ETA: my doctors have said that a weight change of 20lb in either direction warrants a TSH check. So it's possible you may just need a higher dose because of that. But it could be a combo of factors.
