Re: Randoms - Week of September 12th

  • Is anyone suffering from allergies? I never had them this time of the year, but they hit me like a ton of bricks right before the weekend. I've been miserable since and am waiting to talk to my doctor to see what I can take that's safe. Anyone have any good remedies in the meantime? I'm ready to rip my nose off and scratch my eyes out

  • Hi, @Tulips29!  I thought I had bad allergies (as I normally take singular seasonally).  When I went to the doctor, they said I could take normal claritin or another over the counter allergy medicine.  They didn't want me to take singular as they said it was a class C, although some sources say it's a class B.  I was also given an script for an albuterol inhaler, which is safe to take.  Make sure to still run things by your Ob once you get the scripts from your doctor.

  • @Tulips29 As Piperella said, Claritin is okay and my doc also okayed Benadryl. I take Benadryl to help me sleep and then it helps my allergies too.

  • @Piperella @dragonfaerie Thanks, ladies! I spoke to my OB and he said the same...I chose Claritin for now, Benadryl puts me to sleep and I need to function at work. Hopefully this little pill kicks in soon. Apparently we're prone to allergies more since our bodies and immune system is changing. Can't it work the other way and kick these allergies to the curb instead of bringing them out?

  • @ADRIANAC1982 That is seriously the craziest story I've read recently.  I took the prescription my doctor gave me for the inhaler, but never filled it.  That is nuts.

We actually realized that my "allergies" were a cough variant asthma, brought on not by allergies, but due to the decrease in lung capacity/space.  When LO was breech, he was taking up a lot more room and I coughed all the time.  Now that he's flipped, I cough more frequently when he is kicking and/or i'm sitting up in a chair.

  • @frustrated and ttc same boat here! I have a week and a half left of crinone, I think when the dr said it's irritating my cervix and intercourse can cause bleeding dh freaked. The 26th can't come soon enough!
  • Any helpful tips on feet and legs swelling??? I try to elevate my feet when I'm at home but at 25 weeks at the end of the day, I feel like my feet look like sausages. lol. I'm drinking tons of water, I've got a great foot soak that seems to help, I'm getting into the pool when I can and trying to stay away from too much salt.Plus its still pretty hot here in Phoenix so that doesn't help.  I'm just terrified what 3rd trimester is going to be like if its already starting to be an issue.

  • @griffin5413 I have the same issue . I haven't tried compression socks yet but have debated . I have heard people recommend getting plenty of electrolytes . So I've been drinking coconut water and that has seemed to help to some extent . I can barely put my shoes on right now though because my feet are so swollen !

Compression socks are definitely the way to go, and if you can put your feet up for a few minutes every hour or so, that will help too. Maybe I'll get some coconut water too!

I also eat the two different ThinkThin bar types, which I'm sure aren't super great, but they have good protein and fiber counts, which is important! @teriulbricht I personally would be a bit worried now. You are still relatively early, but you still need to be getting nutrition. I'd call your clinic ASAP and ask them what to do.

and well I finally eat so I'll eat when hungry!

    I wouldn't wait too long @teriulbricht
It might be because I had hyperemesis gravidarum and was hospitalised 3 times that I over react.
But as my doctor said to me, I could feel less horrible much sooner.
So I would give your clinic/doctor a call and ask them what they would do.
Maybe they'll tell you not to worry, maybe they want to check your urine for (I can't remember what it was they checked mine for, but I had something that wasn't good).
Better safe than sorry, and their jobs is to make you stop worrying.
    Get well soon!

FET cycle #3 Transfer July 28th 2016, Triplets born healthy on February 26th 2017 at 33w1d!

  • So, I'm going to Iceland in November with my best friend. I will be in my second trimester at that point, and we had planned to go to the Blue Lagoon Geothermal Pool. The website says it is safe for pregnant women, but I'm concerned it is too much like a hot tub. What do you all think? Would you get in? Maybe I could just go up to my legs? I don't want to ruin her trip, but I want to keep bean sprout safe.

  • Here's the answer one of my friends got from them a few years back: (how I love she doesn't delete e-mails!)

Every individual is on his/her own responsibility while bathing in the lagoon. The temperature of the lagoon is between 37-40°C/100-110°F. Many pregnant women bathe in the lagoon but it is important that every woman evaluates her physical condition before entering the lagoon. Some women may find the lagoon too warm so it is important to drink plenty of fresh water and avoid being hungry during the visit. Pregnancy massage that takes place on a mattress in the lagoon is available.

There is a variety of warmth in the lagoon. So stay in the colder part and listen to your body!

Oh and don't get your hair wet, it'll ruin it I've been told!

I'd recommend to contact them and see if they still say the same. I would reckon they do, as nothing has changed

  • Oooh so jealous of your Iceland trip, that will be so fun! We live close to the Napa Valley, where they have thermal springs on the northern end. We're going up next weekend and I do plan to dip into the mineral pools--since wine is out for me I need at least SOME relaxation!

I imagine you should be able to gauge when you're there how comfortable you feel. If you're feeling hesitant maybe try to keep your stay in the pools on the short side, and alternate it with sitting on the edge with just your legs in. Some warming should be ok, you just don't want to shoot up your body temperature way up for a sustained amount of time?
  • @clt2pwm11 if you have an appointment a week or so before you leave maybe run it by them and see what they say? i'm sure your friend will understand if you just sit on the edge or make it short dip. you've got to do what you think is best for you and your little one. by the sounds of things it's only a couple of degrees warmer than body temp so a short dip might not be too harmful. iceland sounds super fun! i'd love to go some day.

I had another check on our health website in Norway @teriulbricht, as I had one of my famous sleepless nights, to see what they recommend as Scandinavians love their hot baths, saunas, and anything else that warms in the winter.

They recommend not to use it in your first trimester due to warmth could stress the baby and it needs to focus on getting important organs and nervous system in place.
After 1st trimester they recommend to take not more then 10 min a time, and not to have your body completely under water all the time. As you won't sweat in the water your body can't regulate the heet.
They say it's important to drink a lot and not to over do it.
