I was told to fast but I'm worried that not eating will make me nauseous and make my sugar levels go crazy. Would it skew the results if I did have some protein before the test?
@ashleaf2018 the instructions my doc gave me for mine said "fasting is recommended, but if you do eat before, eat protein and avoid carbohydrates." -- so I would think based on that, you'd be fine.
@ashleaf2018 I was told I didn't have to fast before the 1 hour, but I did thinking I was playing it safe and I ended up failing and totally wondering if that is what happened, bc I was really surprised.
I was also told to fast for at least 10 hours but no more than 12 for the 3 hour test today. And I'm feeling awful at the moment bc of it. I can't wait for food!
I am really amazed by how different not only each process is (fast, don't fast, fast for 1 hour, fast for 10, eat protein, blood draw before and after, blood draw after only) but also at what number you fail. I've seen both 130 and 140. It seems there would be a more standardized process.
Just curious, those of you who have gestational diabetes... How are your amniotic fluid levels? I had an ultrasound a week and a half ago at 24 weeks, 2 days. I was told that my level was at 24 which is slightly above normal. I was told that could be an indication that I have GD. I see my OB on Monday but as of yet no date has been set for me to take the test. I'm scared I'm going to get bad news.

I haven't had my glucose test yet, but my friend delivered her LO in June and was diagnosed with GD. She was actually opposite. Her levels were low enough that she was hospitalized twice and they ended up delivering her daughter at exactly 36 weeks. I don't think there is a direct correlation to GD and fluid levels.
I was waiting for my last blood draw for the three hour just now and overheard one of the lab techs. She had to call a woman who took her three hour GTT last Friday and tell her that they lost her labs and she had to do the test again.
Also just found out that I failed the 1 hour so I'll be taking the 3 hour on Monday. FX to everyone waiting for results, and if I join club GD I'll at least look forward to sharing recipes and support with everyone.
I guess I should rephrase... I am not really freaking out but just concerned with what the results might come back with and how it all goes down. Thanks @kate08young for the info on your appt!
A friend of mine, perfectly healthy, was diagnosed with GD with her PG over a year ago. She said it wasn't horrible, and it actually just made her, and her hubby, eat better all around.
I just hate blood draws of any kind, and would have a heck of a time pricking myself to check... in general.
I will be hungry afterwards though, as I have another U/S scheduled before the test, and probably won't eat anything in between (will just eat breakfast, but will try to eat that a little later than normal)... and then not eat until after my appts. are done. At least there are some good fast food joints on my way home, ha.

Same. I took a 2 hour test where I had to fast for 8-10 hours beforehand, and then I drank the stuff (which wasn't that bad, mine tasted like non-carbonated, too-syrupy Sprite). I'm surprised at the variance in tests and procedures, too.
Still waiting on my 3 hour test results that they said would be ready at 11am. Now they are telling me that we most likely won't get them till Monday. Wow that's really annoying!!!!

@ashleaf2018 - I was told I could eat before the drink but couldn't eat or drink after. I ate a bowl of Greek yogurt with some berries and cinnamon (because I didn't want to add honey and I heard cinnamon stabilizes blood sugar haha). I drank the drink maybe 1.5 hours after I ate and passed. The cutoff for mine was 135.
I'm awaiting my results from my test today. @cayaylonglegs sorry you're bummed.
Regarding fasting - please don't compare what others do to your instructions - there are different cut offs for whether you were asked to fast or not. If you were asked to fast and you eat, you will likely have to fast again and take the test another time.
I just got an email of my results. I didn't pass the 1hr by 6 points. I'm honestly not sure if I'll have the 3hr or not because at my appointment she made it sound like I'd have to check my levels over several days and then go from there. But I'll call Monday and ask.

I am opting to not test this time, because I've never been close to failing. But, one thing I've learned is that just because you fail doesn't mean you are insulin resistant... You might just have had a bad day (eaten something less than ideal the day before) or the test itself messes with your system. This is anticdotal but one of my midwives didn't do the test with glucola, she would have you go eat a big pancake breakfast with syrup, orange juice and eggs... Then test with a regular finger prick machine... She said that she felt it gave more "real life" and accurate results... Because who fasts... And drinks crazy amounts of sugar on and empty stomach??? It's is just bound to mess with you. Any whoo... I'm sorry. It stinks! But keep looking for answers if you aren't satisfied that your really are insulant resistant.
I'll be 28w this Friday, have an appointment on Thursday for a growth scan/placenta check...but there's been no mention of of the GD test. Can it be done after 28 weeks or did the Dr drop the ball?
@mforinger I thought I would have to wait until tomorrow but my results were in this morning. The healthcare system I'm a part of has an app that has all test results, appointments, etc and it's great.
@kbduke that's awesome! In totally jealous, I live in wayyy too rural of an area for anything that advanced haha. So do you have any idea what the plan is as far as follow up/precautions since you failed the first but passed the second? I'm curious about that, assuming just keeping an eye on what you eat but no one has mentioned anything about that yet to me.
@mforinger I haven't heard anything about follow up. From what I understand the three hour is the more definitive test so nothing further is needed. But I'll let you know if my doctor says anything different.
@sourlemon most docs generally screen during that time. some docs will not screen low risk patients (age <25, no familiar risk factors, healthy weight, etc) although that is extremely unusual and typically not advocated by the ACOG and the ADA. I think they time it between 24-28 because this is the time that a lot of things start changing e.g. 75% only become positive for GD in their third tri (vs earlier). the O'Sullivan screening test (1hr challenge) has been tested at various intervals and with each week that goes by, positive predictive value increases, so screening later is only an issue if you have uncontrolled sugars affecting you and your baby's health. I put off my screening until 32 weeks last time I was pregnant because I was dreading it. doc is not letting me get away with that this time!
Im meeting with my diabetic nurse and dietician on Thursday. Looking back for me there were possible warning signs. DH has been commenting for months how much thirstier I have been. I just attributed it to pregnancy, but I have nearly tripled my fluid intake in the past 2-3 months. I've also had issues with numb/tingling feet (no swelling) and again assumednit was pregnancy related. I should start paying better attention to my body

@cayaylonglegs, I'm so sorry you didn't pass. I had so hoped that I would be a club of 1! But we should totally do a GD check in once a week and share recipes! I go to a class on Wednesday, but I've been testing since last Tuesday. Overall, it's not super hard to fit in testing, the diet aspect and the limited sweets is completely annoying!!
Sooooo I failed the 3 hour test. I have my follow up appt. with the endocronoligist today. I failed 2 tests- 2hr and 3hr. Let's see what the doctor has to say.

I am (not so) patiently waiting for the results of my three hour. Does anyone know what is considered passing/failing. Like, if you pass the fasting, 2 hour and 3 hour part but fail the 1 hour do they consider that a pass or fail? I guess that is a loaded question since we have talked about how there seems to be no standard protocol for these tests! Just wondering what other people's experiences have been.
@KatieJo1205 I'm not sure what the standard is but my doctor said as long as I had numbers below a certain amount in at least 2 of the 4 blood draws then I passed.
Well just got the call that I failed the 3 hour. Awesome. Even though I know it's not a huge deal I just wanna cry. I really don't understand bc i really do eat healthy and try to watch it, especially since being pregnant. Also of the 4 blood draws my levels were only too high for 2 of them, which apparently by my doctors standards is an overall fail. Seems completely unfair. Can't wait for the finger pricking. Happy Monday ugh. Hopefully everyone else gets better results!

It is NOT YOUR FAULT!!!! There is nothing you could have done to prevent this. Your body reacts differently to the extra/new hormones when pregnant. Please don't beat yourself up about it.

Thanks @cayaylonglegs and @Kate08Young. I'm sure I'll get over it and learn to manage, I just need a few days to be bitter I guess. I'm most concerned for baby's health so whatever I can do to help him is what I'll do, it's just frustrating for sure.
I notice that all the target numbers for passing are different...anyone know why that is?
It depends on the instructions from your provider - fasting parameters for passing will be different than non-fasting. That's why I mentioned earlier you have to follow YOUR docs guidelines not what anyone else does.
